1 D-2 THE STATE H.AL Deromedi CMU grid Aug. 7. 1978 next coach? Hector's 3rd win puts Kenrich into state finals -4 -V. I f-y, -I HECTOR STARTED it with a single, Howard Thrum sacrificed him to second and after Ron Cluley was called out on strikes, Gordie Hetrick blasted a two-run homer to end the scoreless struggle. Hetrick's blow to left field hit the top of the fence and bounded out of the park.

Hector's other victories were 6-2 over Bell in a first round game and a 5-2 decision over Lansing's Art's Bar in a second round game. HECTOR ALLOWED four runs and 12 hits in the three games and fanned 20 while not walking a batter. Hetrick also had a single for Kenrich off Boetsema. Kenrich Construction swept to the Men's Class A Fast Pitch Regional Tournament title Sunday, beating Grand Rapids Bell Pickup 2-0 as Al Hector notched his third straight tourney victory. It was Hector's second win over Bell in the tournament, and was a neat two-hit by seven strikeouts.

HECTOR CONTRIBUTED a pair of hits and scored one of the runs in Ken-rich's sixth inning. For five innings Hector and Bell's Fud Boetsema hurled shutout ball. Hector didn't allow a hit until Ray Lutke's lead off double in the fifth. In the sixth Randy Bradley singled. Kenrich, winner's of the State Class Fast Pitch title a year ago, earned a berth in the Class A state finals in Bay City this weekend, by scoring two runs in the sixth.

Nancy Lopez Two goals in reach BY BOB GROSS Staff Writer MT. PLEASANT Herb Deromedi is expected to don the cap as Central Michigan University's new head football coach today, succeeding Roy Kramer who resigned last week after accepting the athletic directorship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. The reins were to be turned over to Deromedi during the hastily called press conference at Rose Center today. He has been Kramer's defensive coordinator since 1969. ITS ALSO expected that a new assistant coach will be unveiled.

A rumor circulating was that William Kar-pinski, head grid coach at Hastings High, will join the Chippewa staff. Deromedi's selection came as no surprise since he has been very close to the Kramer system, starting out as coach of CMU's offensive line before taking over the defense. He's a former assistant at Royal Oak Kimball High, graduate of the University of Michigan and ex-football and basketball coach at Byron High where he was named Motor Valley Conference Coach of the Year in basketball during the 1961-62 season. i I Herb Deromedi Slaps fellow driver L3 Kraayeveld, Cefalo sparkle in NFL debuts Lopez in 8th win and her trophy confidence is coming right back to me. You feel like a champion when you can go out on top and stay there.

It makes me feel good." Lopez sliced through the field of 80 consistently after shooting an opening-round 1-over-par 73, good for eighth place. She followed that with a 71 and a 72 and went into the final round Sunday in the lead, 6-under par. She putted her way to victory, not the slightest bit bothered by sudden and unexpected surges through the field by Mary Dwyer and Joann earner, both of whom were pressing her hard midway through the round. DWYER, CARNER and Sally Little of South Africa who had led for the first two rounds all finished with 4-under-par 292s for the par-74 course, three strokes behind Lopez. Undeterred by a couple of bogeys which brought her down to 5-under and even with her main rivals, Lopez kept her head and got back to 7-under with Camer and Dwyer both back in the clubhouse and only Little, who was playing in the same group with her, to worry about.

8, carts Am title "This guy is so good its scary," declared Wiebe. "This guy is just unbelievable." Clampett credits his success to the book written by Howard Kelly, a golf pro from the state of Washington. "THE GOLFING Machine" is nothing to laugh at," Clampett said. "One of my chores is to prove the validity of it. There is not a thing in that book that is not proven.

Very few golfers use it many are afraid of it but it is going to be the Bible of golf. That's inevitable." Clampett played like a machine Sunday, even making one of his shots successfully lefthanded in the semifinals when surrounded by trees and unable to make his usual right-handed shot. The 5-foot-9, 137-pounder reached match play by finishing fourth behind medalist Vance Heafner of Cary, N.C. in 72 holes of qualifying. IN THE first two rounds of match play Saturday, Clampett eliminated Buddy Alexander of Statesboro, 4 and 3 and Ron Commans, of Westlake Village, Calif.

1 up in 19 holes. Sunday's semifinal and championship matches were played before a gallery of more than 11,500. Key win for Foyt SUNNINGDALE, England (AP) -Mickey Wright's 15-year-old record of 13 tournament wins in a single year is in danger Nancy Lopez has her eyes on it. Lopez, the wonder girl of modern golf, has two ambitions. One is to break Wright's record and the other is to be the first girl to win $200,000 in a single year.

Judy Rankin held the record with $150,734 won in 1976, but Lopez already has beaten that by picking up $15,000 for winning the European women's championships at Sunning-dale Sunday. AND ALTHOUGH this Is Lopez's first year as a professional, the two ambitions do not seem farfetched. The Sunningdale win brought her tally so far this year to eight and there are around 13 more tournaments still to go. "It's going to be hard to beat Mickey's record," said Lopez. "I've got to get a move on.

"AND ID like to be the first to win $200,000 in a year. It can be done I've got through a bad patch and my Clampett, 1 off Western BENTON HARBOR (AP) If Bob Clampett is any example, more golfers may want to think about becoming "golfing machines." The 18-year-old whiz kid from Car-mel, captured the 76th annual Western Amateur Golf Championship Sunday by downing Mark Wiebe of Es-condido, Calif, 2-up in the championship match. A DISCIPLE of the physicsbased book, "The Golfing Machine," Clampett reached the championship match on the Point O' Woods Golf and County Club course by edging Bob Tway of Marietta, Ga. 1-up in 19 holes in the semifinals. Wiebe ousted Bill Fibbick of Martinsville, 3 and 2 in his semifinal match.

Clampett, a college All-American from Brigham Young University in Utah, is the youngest player ever to win the Western Amateur in the 10 years it has been played at the Benton Harbor course. HE ALSO is the first ever to win the Western Junior and the Western Amateur two events sponsored by the Western Golf Association in the same year. By The Associated Press It was a weekend of debuts as the National Football League opened its preseason game schedule. Some of them were dazzling, as in the case of rookies Jimmy Cefalo and Dave Kraayeveld and some not-so-brilliant, as for Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell and a lot of coaches starting new assignments. Preseason action continues tonight as the New York Jets host the Atlanta Falcons at Giants Stadium and the Cleveland Browns, coached for the first time by Sam Rutigliano, host the New York Giants.

KRAAYEVELD WAS thundered 61 yards for a touchdown on a pass interception, victimizing San Francisco 49ers third-string quarterback Steve DeBerg in the fourth period to give Dallas a 34-24 lead. The Cowboys went on to win 41-24 over the 49ers Saturday. "Kraayeveld was outstanding on one play," Dallas Coach Tom Landry said of the rookie free agent from Milton College. "I can't say what else he did out there, and that will be interesting on film." Kraayeveld had to enjoy basking in the spotlight, but he wasn't taking anything for granted. "I HAVE a lot of confidence in myself, especially after this game who knows if I'll look this good after a couple of more games?" 49ers Coach Pete McCulley was one of several new coaches to lose his first time out with a new team, but there were some bright spots for him, one being quarterback Jim Plunkett, who hit nine of 14 passes for 160 yards.

Plunkett also had touchdown passes of 39 yards to Fred Solomon and 32 yards to rookie tight end Ken MacAfee of Notre Dame. The 49ers played without O.J. Simpson, who was sidelined with a swolen knee. Cefalo, a more famous rookie from Penn State, caught two touchdown passes from veteran back-up quarter back Don Strock to lead the Miami Dolphins to a 28-7 thrashing of the St. Louis Cardinals and new Coach Bud Wilkinson.

CEFALO, WHO came into camp already a celebrity known for the series of articles he wrote about college football life and recruiting practices while at Penn State, was more at home with the kind of attention he drew Saturday night. "I just wanted to kind of sneak into camp just like any other rookie, but Kenrich 000 000 0 1 i I Bell Pickup 000 000 0 0 2 0 Al Hector ond John Casteel; Fud Boetsema and Bill Lutke. the timing of the series (which ran in newspapers nationwide) made that any other rookie, adjusting to your first NFL camp is hard." Wilkinson, who coached Oklahoma for 17 years, was nonetheless pleased. "IT FELT good to be back on the sideline," he said. "I don't think there's that much difference between college and pro football." Marv Levy was the only man to prosper in a new coaching assignment.

The Kansas City Chiefs downed the Green Bay Packers 17-14 as Ronnie Rowland scored from 1 yard out with 1:29 gone in the fourth quarter. Rowland carried seven times for 34 yards in the decisive drive and took a short pass from Dennis Shaw and turned it into a 25-yard gain. Earl Campbell, playing his first game with the Houston Oilers, was less than impressive, picking up only 29 yards on 12 attempts. He was vastly overshadowed by Denver backup quarterback Norris Weese, who ran 16 yards for one touchdown and set up another with a 27-yard run as the Broncos beat the Oilers 17-12. IN OTHER Saturday games, the New Orleans Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles 14-7 in the first American football game ever battled on Mexican soil.

All the ingredients were there: traffic jams, gatecrashers, cheerleaders, jostling fans and beer vendors. The Oakland Raiders got by the Chicago Bears 14-13, marring the first time at the helm for new Chicago Coach Neill Aimstrong. His predecessor, Jack Pardee, piloting Washington for the first time, suffered a similar fate as the Minnesota Vikings dumped the Redskins 20-13. The Pittsburgh Steelers downed the Baltimore Colts 22- 10, the Detroit Lions beat the Buffalo Bills and new Coach Chuck Knox 28-20, the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles 14-7, ruining George Allen's first time out with the Rams. AND TAMPA Bay started its third year by blanking the Cincinnati Bengals 17.

"I'm always happy when we win," Bucs Coach John McKay said wryly. His squad lost 26 regular season games before finishing the season with two victories. The Bucs grabbed the lead early on a 5-yard touchdown pass by running back Jimmy DuBose, got a 25-yard field goal by Neil O'Donoghue and had a second touchdown when rookie Johnny Davis circled left end on a 9-yard sweep. on all sizes Built on sound, factory inspected bias-ply passenger tire bodies. 13, C-78-13, C-78-14 He spent two years as the football, reserve basketball and golf coach at Ann Arbor Pioneer High. CENTRAL MICHIGAN University officials scurried to name Deromedi in time for this week's Mid-American Conference media gathering at Kings Island in Ohio. Official football practice at CMU begins Aug. 21 and the season opener is at home Sept. 9 against conference foe Kent State.

It's expected that Deromedi will be given a contract for one season, then, as is customary, the procedure would be to advertise the head coaching position. An evaluation will be made by Central's governing body after the season before an official decision on Deromedi's status is made. Kramer, who has been Central's head coach since 1967, compiled a record of 83-32-2. He never coached a losing team at CMU and won Coach of The Year honors after the 1974 season in which the Chippewas captured the College Division National Championship at the Camellia Bowl in Sacramento, Calif. Last season CMU posted a 10-1 record.

KRAMER'S DEPARTURE left the 10-team Mid-American Conference with only four incumbant coaches from last season. Ed Chlebek left Eastern Michigan to become head man at "Boston College, Ball State's Dave McClain is at North Carolina, Dennis Fitzgerald left Kent State to become the assistant at Syracuse and Bill Hess at Ohio University died. The dean of coaches now is Western Michigan's Elliot Uzelac, starting his fourth season. It was reported that Lansing Eastern football coach Dick Flynn had been a candidate for one of Central's assistants. Flynn grew up in Mt.

Pleasant but played football at Michigan State. Karpinski, head coach and athletic director at Hastings, played his college football under Bill Kelly. Karpinski has spent the past four seasons at Hastings but has a career record of 106-31-6. Foyt was involved in an incident afterwards with fellow driver Steve Kris-iloff. FOYT SAID, "I slapped him because he was giving me some smart mouth I'm not listening to that from anybody." The incident occurred in the winners' circle after Foyt said Krisiloff had accused him of blocking out.

"He said I cost him a lot of time and I just reached out and popped him one," said Foyt. "I would have done more than that if I could." KRISILOFF WAS physically restrained from retaliating. Foyt called Krisiloff a Vfourcylinder crybaby." Drivers at the race with fourcylin-der cars put on a slowdown in morning qualifying. They were protesting USAC's rule on pop-off valves, which currently can be used only for qualifying. The four- cylinder drivers said the V-8 engines have an advantage without popoff valves.

FOYT SAID, "A lot of people made bad decisions by going to four- cylinder cars this year. The V-8 has caught up with the 161-cubic-inch engine. A lot of pople made a lot of mistakes. Now they're mad." Foyt said he was gong to go to a Cosworth engine next year and abandon his Coyote. Pond, who led 22 of the 188 laps, pulled in front for the last time with five laps to go, after pole position starter Cale Yarborough had been knocked out of contention by a too-late pit stop.

WITH POND leading a pack of four cars down to the white flag signaling one lap remaining, a slower car blew a tire and left huge chunks of rubber and a six-foot blade of metal on the track in front of the leaders. "I couldn't miss it. I didn't see it until I saw on top of it," Pond said. "I ran right over it and felt it hit under my car. But it didn't hurt me." But the debris kicked up and hit Benny Parsons' car and bent a fender against a tire.

Some of the trash then smashed into Donnie Allison's windshield and sprayed all over David Pearson's car. Parsons and Pearson backed off, while Allison stayed in the chase. But Pond, whose car had been running flawlessly since an early pit stop to make a chassis change, held the car length edge over Allison all the way around to the checkered flag. POND TOOK a victory lap not, he said, to doubly insure victory, but "to stop crying before I went in. Allison said, "Maybe that'll end all the talk that Lennie can't drive.

I was glad to see him win if I couldn't." Pond had numerous secondplace finishes' but no previous firsts in his seven-year Grand National career. YARBOROUGH, WHO with Buddy Baker led much of the race, passed Parsons and Pearson on the last lap for third. Baker retired after about 400 miles with engine failure. COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Battling A.J. Foyt has silenced any "over-the-hill" whispers with a bristling victory in the Texas Grand Prix, after which he slapped a fellow race car driver who was unhappy with the four-time Indianapolis 500 "This was a very important victory for me because it's been a tough year." said the 43- year-old Foyt, who averaged 156.5 mph Sunday in his red Coyote V-8.

"I plan to go two more years if I don't get hurt or crippled up." FOYT ADDED, "My crew worked like it was supposed to" in the yellow-flag marred 200- mile Indy-style car race. "They finally forgot what heroes they were." Foyt. of Houston, hadn't won a U.S. Auto Club race this year and things looked dark Sunday when his crew discovered a radiator support had snapped just 10 minutes before the race at the Texas World Speedway. Quick work got Foyt on the track just in.time.

"The crew was finally on the ball, said Foyt, who took the lead to stay just 25 laps before the checkered flag. FOYT SAID, "I was nervous I might run out of gas but I was ready to burn a valve if I had to." He outdueled fellow Texan Johnny Rutherford for his 60th championship car victory. AJdrich finished ahead of Warren Badgero, who was unable to qualify and had to start at the rear of the 25-car field. Russ Fisher was third followed by Fred Parisian and Gene Issacson. IN PRELIMINARY action, Al Kukla won the dash while Shorty Frayer.

John Miller and Aldrich claimed heats and Fisher the pursuit. Roy Straight of Pontiac won his second straight Street Stock 15-lap feature, leading Al Ord-way, Steve Poniatowski Steve Kapuscik and Eric Chant across the finish line. "In a special feature for Owosso-area drivers, Dave Thompson won and Dave Haskel was second. A total of 182 riders participated in the weekly Moto-Cross racing program here Friday. Chester, looked like a world-beater as he won the fastest 500-mile auto race in history Sunday, the 10th annual Talladega 500 at Alabama International Motor Speedway. Pond, who ran laps in traffic at over 200 mph, averaged a record 174.700 mph, which was slowed by four caution periods and regular pit stops. He beat Donnie Allison by a car length. "It was a long time coming," said Pond after the first Grand National stock car victory of his career. "I've gotta talk to a lotta people now and get a few things straightened out.

I think this should have some bearing on my future with this team." Pond was referring to rumors his team members were dissatisfied with nis lack of victories this season despite topflight equipment. IT WAS speculated last week that Pond either had already been fired or would be replaced at the end of the year by Darrell Waltrip. Pond denied any knowledge of those actions, but admitted, "We've got a few things to get squared away. When we do, we'll make an announcement." Pond drew immense satisfaction from winning not only the fastest 500-miler ever, but also the most competitive. There were a record 67 official lead changes among nine drivers.
