That forced emergency workers to take victims to regional trauma centers by ground ambulance At least 28 people were treated at four facilities. Of the 17 students treated at Montgomery Regional, five had been released Monday night but three were listed as critical, said hospital CEO Scott Hill. "It was a very intense situation for a short period of time," Hill said.

"I wouldn't say we were overwhelmed. What I'd say is we certainly had a lot of patients. "I don't know that you can ever properly prepare for this level of violence," Hill added. lt---. I i A local tradition ends this month, when WKAR (Channel 23) has its final auction.

This will be the 30th auction and the last one. DeAnne Hamilton, the station manager, broke the news to staffers Monday, then phoned some of the volunteers. "Donations have been down lately," Hamilton said. "I think part of it is Michigan's economy." Still, WKAR has kept its auction going longer than most. Other public-TV stations gradually bailed out partly because their auctions were no longer unique.

"Thirty years ago, we were one of the first groups to do this," said Barbara Beers, the current auction coordinator. "Now it seems like pretty much every organization has an auction." That includes local auctions. "The poor merchant keeps getting hit up for things," Hamilton said. It also includes goods being sold on TV see Auction Page 5A ALAN KIMAssociated Press Wounded in shooting: An unidentified person is carried out of Norris Hall on the campus of Virginia Tech on Monday after a gunman opened fire in Blacksburg, killing 32 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in modem U.S. history.

Police say killer turns gun on self; motive for massacre still unknown Sue Lindsey Associated Press BLACKSBURG, Va. A gunman massacred 32 people at Virginia Tech in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history Monday, cutting down his victims in two attacks two hours apart before the university could grasp what was happening and warn students. The bloodbath ended with the gunman committing suicide, bringing the death toll to 33 and stamping the campus in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains with unspeakable tragedy, perhaps forever.

Investigators gave no motive for the attack. The gunman's name was not immediately released, and it was not known if he was a student. "Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." But he was also faced with difficult questions about the university's handling of the emergency and whether it did enough to warn students and protect them after the first burst of gunfire. Some students bitterly complained they got no warning from the university until an e-mail that arrived more than two hours after the first shots rang out.
