FOOTBALL Classified 964-7161 WEDNESDAY, AUG. 23, 1989 BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER Arnold's signing spells end for Haji-Sheikh The Associated Press PONTIAC The first cuts made by Detroit Lions head coach Wayne Fontes were partially offset by the addition of punter Jim Arnold, who ended a holdout by signing a new contract. Arnold, a seven-year veteran, signed what is believed to be a three-year contract Tuesday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Arnold is considered one of the NFL's top punters and has been in the last three Pro Bowls.

Last year, Arnold punted 97 times for 4,110 yards, averaging 42.4 yards per kick. Earlier in the day, Fontes announced his first roster cuts, releasing seven players, including kicker Ali Haji-Sheikh. Also cut were offensive linemen Steve Baack and Todd Irvin, defensive linemen Tom Baldwin and Derek MacCready, and linebackers Byron Hunt and Mike McCray. That reduces the roster to 74 players. "I sat down with each of them and told them what their shortcomings were," Fontes said at the Silverdome, where the Lions are getting ready for Friday night's game in Seattle.

"I wished them well and they wished me well." Haji-Sheikh, a former University of Michigan star, was cut one Eye on the Lions I What: NFL exhibition game. Who: Detroit Lions at Seattle Seahawks. When: Friday, 10:30 p.m. day after kicker Ed Murray worked out with the Lions for the first time following a lengthy holdout. The six-year veteran has also played with the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons.

Baack was in his fifth year with the Lions after being drafted in the third round in 1984. He spent last season on injured reserve with a hip injury. Irvin was the Lions' ninth-round draft pick in 1988. He was released during training camp last year but was invited back this year. Baldwin spent four years as a New York Jet before being signed as a free agent.

MacCready was the club's ninth-round draft choice from Ohio State. Hunt was signed as a free agent after being left unprotected by the Giants, where he spent the first eight years of his career. McCray also was signed as a free agent. More cuts were expected today as the Lions try to get closer to a 60-man roster before leaving Thursday for Seattle. The roster must be at 60 or below by Aug.

29, when the Lions will be on the West Coast preparing for their last preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. A major Detroit goal this week will be stopping the Seahawks' blitz. In the first two exhibition games, Cleveland and Cincinnati caused major problems for Detroit's stretch offense by blitzing. Fontes knows the Lions must stop the blitz for the stretch to work. "We did not get a whole lot of heat unless they blitzed," Fontes said.

"But when they blitzed, they got in. There are a few things we can do to stop the blitz. We can go to some play-action, which we've done very little of so far. We'll just have to use it sooner than we want to." Rookie Rodney Peete, who will start at quarterback against Seattle, said it's only a matter of time before the Lions stop the blitz. "People talk about this offense and say the quarterback is going to get hit a lot," Peete said.

"But we still have the same number of guys blocking as in a conventional offense. We just have to pick them up when they blitz. "It's going to take some time. But when we do get on the same page, this offense is capable of blowing teams out of the stadium." AP Photo Third-string Minnesota quarterback Rich Gan- of the Vikings-Redskins exhibition game Monnon bobbled the snap during the fourth quarter day night. Minnesota won, 23-13.

Fullback Williams signs $4 million deal with Seattle The Associated Press John L. Williams proved last year he could catch a football. His latest catch is a four-year contract that could make him the highestpaid fullback in the NFL. The 15th player taken in the 1986 college draft, Williams reportedly signed with the Seattle Seahawks for $4 million for four years. "It all worked out for the best," said Williams, the Seahawks' leading receiver last year while earning a reputation as one of the league's best multi-purpose backs.

"Hopefully, over the next four years, I'll be able to say I was part of a Super Bowl Last year, as a rookie first-round draft pick, Williams signed a fouryear contract that would have given him $350,000 this year, plus a $25,000 roster bonus. He held himself out of last week's game against New England and reported three days late to the team's training camp because of dissatisfaction over the progress of negotiations. "The days I've been practicing, I've dropped three or four balls I wouldn't normally have Williams said. "I realized that (concern over the negotiations) was the reason." Seattle still has three veteran holdouts offensive tackle Ron Mattes and linebackers Darren Comeaux and Tony Woods. I Philadelphia Eagles Reggie White became the highest-paid defensive lineman in the NFL when he signed a four-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Although terms were not announced, Eagles president Harry Gamble said White's contract exceeds the $1.5 million a year earned by Buffalo Bills lineman Funeral Directors 107 Local Funerals 102 COMETTO, LOLA Arrangements will be announced later by Richard A. nfl camps Bruce Smith, previously the highest-paid defensive player in the league. I New York Jets Quarterback Mark Malone has signed with the New York Jets, four days after being released by the San Diego Chargers. Malone, entering his 10th NFL season, will compete with Kyle Mackey for the backup role behind Ken O'Brien, a position that opened when Pat Ryan sprained his left knee in Sunday night's exhibition game against Philadelphia. I Denver Broncos Veteran receiver Mark Jackson was expected to return to the Denver training camp today. Jackson, who walked out Monday to protest the lack of progress on a contract extension, was missing from the Tuesday afternoon practice as well.

He was unavailable for comment, but his wife, Ronni, said from the couple's home in Aurora, that she understood her husband would rejoin workouts today. Broncos Coach Dan Reeves has said repeatedly that the team will not negotiate until the player returns to camp. Denver reduced its roster to 72 by cutting its 12th-round draft choice, wide receiver John Javis of Howard University. San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl linebacker Charles Haley ended a month-long holdout and became the first of eight San Francisco 49ers starters to report to training camp. Haley agreed to terms Monday night.

I New England Patriots Tony Eason will see most of the action at quarterback when the Patriots visit Atlanta on Saturday. Coach Raymond Berry said Eason needs more work and will play at least three quarters against the Falcons. Berry also said running back John Stephens, sidelined for more than three weeks with a knee bruise, will see considerable playing time against Atlanta, but that recently signed No. 1 pick Hart Lee Dykes may not be ready. Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis made a pair of deals with Dallas, acquiring offensive tackle Zefross Moss in exchange for an undisclosed draft choice and sending nose tackle Chuck Ehin to the Cowboys, also for an undisclosed pick.

Atlanta Falcons Starting defensive end Mike Gann ended his holdout by agreeing to a fouryear contract. Gann, entering his fifth season, has been a starter since his rookie year. He reportedly will receive $2.4 million over the four years. The Falcons still have three veteran holdouts offensive linemen Bill Fralic, John Scully and Wayne Radloff. No.

1 draft choice Deion Sanders, a defensive back, also is unsigned. I Pittsburgh Steelers They needed four weeks and a day to do it, but the Steelers finally got both of their No. 1 draft picks on the practice field at the same time. Running back Tim Worley, the seventh overall pick, took part in his first contact work since signing a five-year, $3.05 million contract. Offensive tackle Tom Ricketts rejoined practice after missing more than three weeks with a broken thumb.

In other news, the Steelers waived free agent running back Fine Unga, reducing their roster to 74. I New York Giants Even after a perfect 8-for-8 night against Kansas City, reserve quarterback Jeff Rutledge isn't sure of a job. In the past, the Giants have kept three quarterbacks, with Rutledge and Jeff Hostetler backing up Phil Simms. But rule changes concerning injured reserve may force Coach Bill Parcells to keep just two quarterbacks. Rutledge, 31, said Parcells told him he has not made a decision on how many quarterbacks he'll keep.

Second-year quarterback Mike Perez, who missed all of last season with a hip injury, was one of eight players cut by the Giants on Tuesday.
