Detroit (25-9) had already clinched the league's best record and left most of the usual starting lineup on the bench. Ruth Riley played just 11 minutes, while Swin Cash, Deanna Nolan and Elaine Powell never got off the bench.

Cheryl Ford (back) was placed on the injured list before the game, but will be eligible to return for the first playoff game. Washington All-Star Chamique Holdsclaw left the game with 4:07 to play after spraining her left medial collateral ligament in a collision with Detroit's Barb Farris. Holdsclaw was carried to the locker room by teammate Nakia Sanford and did not return. Farris and Sheila Lambert added 12 points each for Detroit. Coco Miller had 15 points for Washington (9-25), while Holdsclaw had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Washington led by 11 points in the first half, but Detroit went on a 16-4 run that spanned both halves. The game stayed close throughout the second half, and the Shock led 60-57 until Asjha Jones hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:57 to play. Astou Ndiaye-Diatta's jumper put the Shock back ahead and Murriel Page missed a short jumper with a minute to play. Lambert put the game away with four free throws in the final 45 seconds. Odom, a restricted free agent, becomes the fourth Clippers regular to leave this summer, joining center Michael Olowokandi and guards Andre Miller and Eric Piatkowski.

Odom averaged 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 49 games last season. In 230 career games, he has averaged 15.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Taken by the Clippers with the No. 4 draft pick in 1999, Odom was suspended for five games in March 2001, then again for eight games that November for violating the league's anti-drug policy. Odom, 23, has also frequently been sidelined by injuries over the past two years.

He missed 45 games last season with wrist and ankle injuries after playing in just 29 games the previous season. The 6-foot-io, 221-pounder signed a six-year offer sheet worth about $63 million with the Heat on Aug. 11. The Clippers had 15 days to match the offer, as they did to keep Elton Brand and Corey Maggette earlier this summer. CONFERENCE WAIVES TRANSFER RULES FOR BAYLOR PLAYERS DALLAS Baylor basketball players who transfer because of the school's self-imposed probation will be exempt from a Big 12 rule that they sit out a year, the conference ruled Monday.

"The council was careful to clarify in its vote that the action was based upon the unique circumstances presented in the Baylor situation," Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said of the ruling by the league's Council of Faculty Athletics Representatives. Baylor President Robert Sloan Jr. offered all players a release from their scholarships Aug. 8 when he announced major violations had been found in the basketball program and coach Dave Bliss resigned. The NCAA already waived its rule requiring transfers to sit out a year, but conference rules still applied.

The ruling means John Lucas III and Kenny Taylor, the Bears' second- and third-leading scorers, are eligible to play this season at different conference schools. Lucas said Monday that he was transferring to Oklahoma State and expected to begin classes this week. Taylor said last week that he was transferring to Texas, which has a scholarship available. Lawrence Roberts, Baylor's top scorer and rebounder last season, signed a letter of intent last week with Mississippi State and started classes at the SEC school. AUTO RACING PENSKE HIRES HORNISH; DE FERRAN RETIRING AFTER SEASON Two-time defending IRL champion Sam Hornish will drive next season for Team Penske, which also announced Monday that Indianapolis 500 champion Gil de Ferran will retire at the end of this year.

Hornish said the deal with the elite team owned by Roger Penske came together after the July 6 race in Kansas. The team said Hornish signed a multiyear contract but gave no details. Helio Castroneves beat his future teammate by a few feet Sunday at Nazareth Speedway, the l-mile oval Penske built in 1986. That gives Penske 118 open-wheel victories including 13 in the Indy 500. LAWYER ASKS JUDGE TO NOT ALLOW CAMERAS IN KOBE COURTROOM EAGLE, Colo. A lawyer who is worried that his 11-year-old son, a basketball fan, will see explicit sexual material on television during the Kobe Bryant case has asked a judge to prohibit cameras in the courtroom for the basketball star's Oct. 9 preliminary hearing.

John Thompson of Coral Gables, told Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett in a court filing Monday that the hearing could include detailed allegations about what happened at the resort hotel where Bryant is accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old worker on June 30. Bryant, 25, a Los Angeles Lakers guard, is charged with felony sexual assault. He has said he had consensual sex with the woman. "This court cannot and must not ignore, as if they did not exist, the rights and wishes of millions of parents, inside and outside this country, to raise their children free of the intruding details of rape that we now can expect to see on ESPN's SportsCenter sandwiched between the Major League Baseball highlights," Thompson wrote. If Gannett denies the request, Thompson asked him to require a delay of at least 10 seconds for a live broadcast from the hearing to allow a court-appointed official to delete sexually explicit material.

Gannett allowed cameras in the courtroom for Bryant's initial court appearance Aug. 6 over the objections of defense attorneys but has not said when he might rule on the latest request.
