SPORTS Sunday, Sept. 8, 1991 Battle Creek Enquirer 5D Monroe's mighty effort lifts Mendon past St. Philip i state playoff-qualifying team, carried the ball 21 times for 179 yards, scored three touchdowns, kicked three extra points and had a a key sack defensively to lead the Hornets to a hard-earned 21-7 victory. Monroe scored on a 49-yard run in the first quarter and then broke open the game, after St. Philip had tied it 7-7, with a pair of fourth-quarter scoring runs.

"Monroe has hurt us the last two years," Hume said. "He's good." St. Philip did show that it had improved from a year ago, when Mendon posted a 40-0 win. But the Tigers hurt themselves at crucial times with costly miscues. After Monroe's first scoring run, St.

Philip's defense shut down the Hornets' running game. But St. Philip saw Brock Maichele recovered a Mendon fumble at the Hornets' 29, St. Philip quarterback Jeff Wells slipped while making a handoff to Jim Pearl, and his fumble was recovered by Mendon. Mendon couldn't move the ball on its next drive, and St.

Philip took over after a short punt on the Hornets' 38. Three plays later, St. Philip had a first-and-10 at Mendon's 28, but Wells fumbled center Charles Lon-ergan's snap and Mendon pounced on the loose ball. "The difference was first-game mistakes," Hume said. "Mendon made them and we didn't.

We also hurt ourselves with key penalties. Mendon was opportunistic." Mendon clung to its 7-0 lead at halftime, but the Tigers finally got a break early in the third quarter. As Mendon set up to punt, Wells broke through the line and blocked Monroe's kick. Pearl recovered the loose ball at Mendon's 37. It took the Tigers six plays to score, with Pearl carrying a Mendon defender over the goal line on a bullish 9-yard run.

Pat Lucas' extra point kick tied the game with 4:58 left in the quarter. Neither team threatened again until Mendon took over at St. Philip's 39 after an 11-yard puntioid scored on an 11-play drive. Monroe's 1-yard dive capped the dne. Mendon converted a third-nd-three from St.

Philip's 6 to setjip the TD. St. Philip stalled on its next dpye and turned the ball over on downs at its own 40. The key play drive came when Monroe sacked Wells for a 10-yard loss on a tftd-and-10 play from midfield. On Mendon' first play ffom scrimmage after taking over, Monroe took a pitch and sprinted in for his final score.

By Marie Bradley Staff Writer St. Philip High football Coach Mike Hume spent the week telling everyone that his Tigers had the ability to beat highly-touted Mendon in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. For three quarters, Hume's Tigers convinced everyone in attendance at C. W. Post Field that their coach was right.

Except for Mendon senior halfback Randy Monroe. Monroe, who gained over 900 yards last season for Mendon's scoring chances slip away late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter when it fumbled deep inside Mendon territory. Two plays after St. Philip's Jim Pearl Lemon goes home 'happy' to be alive Union City loses 1 2-6j opener to Deckerville ter for a 6-0 lead. "It could be six months, a year, two year, maybe three," Lemon said.

"That's the scary part. Lemon played six seasons with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Tigers in November 1981. Though the .273 career hitter was released from the Tigers during spring training this year, he still considers himself part of the team and will closely follow the American League East race. "Tell all the guys on the club that I'm pulling for them," he said. "Tell them they're a great bunch of guys and I really appreciate the cards I've gotten from them.

I'll be a Tiger forever." The Associated Press DETROIT Chet Lemon checked out of a Florida hospital Saturday, almost four weeks after he was admitted to battle a potentially deadly blood clot in his stomach. "I'm just happy to be alive," Lemon told the Detroit Free Press Friday in Saturday's editions. "It was touch-and-go for a while. It really is a miracle that I woke up." Lemon, 36, formerly of the Detroit Tigers, checked into the University of Florida's Shands Hospital Aug. 26 with severe stomach pains.

Lemon suffered the clot due to Local calendarannouncements 630 and 7:50 pm; and Monday and Wednesday nights UNION CITY Union City High opened up their 1991 football season with a 12-6 loss to Deckerville, but not for lack of effort. "I was really pleased with the effort that our kids put out," said Union City Coach Eric Tunde-vold. "This team has worked really hard the whole year." Deckerville broke a 6-6 tie halfway through the fourth quarter with a 65-yard run for a 12-6 advantage. "That would have made a lot of teams quit," said Tundevold. After the treatment, doctors found the clot was still present, but determined the bacteria had created enough tiny holes in the clot for blood to pass through. "The doctors were amazed," Lemon said. "I guess I'm somewhat of a test case. Dr. (Craig) Kitchens told me he's writing a chapter about this." Lemon is taking a blood-thinning medication.
