Woodrow of Pilgrim Congregational of which Joy was an attendant, and Lee Meriwether, exalted ruler of the Elks, will speak at the service. Joy, after having been recorder of deeds since If 07, resigned three-weeks ago. He was succeeded in office by his wife, who was appointed by Gov. Hyde. Joy was 71 years old.

He began his public service In in 1893 and served Ave successive terms, under former Presidents Cleveland, McKlnley and Roosevelt, He represented the Eleventh (St. Louis) District. His residence was at the Bonair Hotel, 4S00 Pershing avenue. When he became ill his duties at the recorder's office were assumed by his wife. She previously had served as assistant marriage license clerk while becoming familiar with the work.

On March 22 Joy, because of his failing health, suggested that he resign at once. It was at his suggestion that Edmond Koeln requested Gov. Hyde to appoint Mrs. Joy. His term would have expired in January.

1923. Born In Illinois. Joy was born at Jacksonville. 111., In 1849. His ancestors came from England in 1635.

In 1895. he married Elisabeth Ina Ryer, widow of Washington Ryer, a San Francisco physician. They met during Joy's first term in congress. Joy was honored on his seventieth birthday at a banquet by 300 friends at Hotel Statler. Edward Hidden was toastmaster.

Former State Senator A. E. L. Gardner, one of the speakers, said that the friendships Joy had made constituted a "monument that few men can build." Telegrams were received from many famcus Americans, including "Uncle Joe" Cannon and Champ Clark. Joy was active in mind until his final illness.
