II 10 ESCAPE FROM AN ICE PACK Survivors of the Whaler Nayarch Tell How They Crossed Ice and Water from the Ship. MANY SAILORS LEFT BEHIND Capt. Whiteside and His Wife, with Six Sailors, Beach Seattle Th Party Obliged to Return to the Ship Twice. SEATTLE. Washington.

Sept- Joseph. YVnltesldea of the lost whaler 3Cavarch. hU wife, and several of the ves-eTa crew' came her on tha steamer Hum-feoldt, which arrived from 8. Michael's to day. They tell the atory of the wreck, of which a first account waa received a few slays a (to.

The Jfavarcb left San Francisco March 2 last and entered the Arctic Ocean in July. She soon rot caught In the Ice at a point 120 miles" northeast of Point Barrow. At first the Captain thought the ship could be extricated from its position, but on July 29 they realised that there was no hop of such an event. They hoisted signals of dis tress, trusting that the revenue cutter neat or arvmo of the other whalers of the fleet would nee them and come to JJlflr assist- nee. But the for came and obscured them for four days.

They drifted rapidly northward with the Icebergs. Finally they decided to leave the ship. On Aug. 14 the whole crew took the small boats and started across the ice. After drag-gins; them tor five miles they came to open water and embarked.

The current caught them at once, and before they had cone ten miles they were In another Ice Kek, They then discovered that they only A five days provisions, and -they abandoned the boats and started across the ice on foot. They got back safely and then commenced preparations for a second at-- tempt to save themselves. All but eight men aeeiaea to pusn across ine ice neius on but It was foggy and disagreeable, and necessitated more clothing than was conducive to rapid travel. For this reason a limited amount or food was carried, for they thought they would surely reach the "Hear or one of -the whalers within two or three days. The eight men left in the boat thought they were better off there than on Ills iv.X RUU nciv icr 1 1 vr Liit.ii Away across the treacherous ice went the thirty-seven men and the gritty woman.

But one day out the Captain and his wife and seven of the others changed their minds about the likelihood of saving themselves by the method they had undertaken. They would come to open water now and then. wnicn unpeaea tneir escape, wnue onen they would find It necessary to go around the massive icebergs rearing precipitous aide down In their path. Nine of the party went back to the ship, leaving twenty-, nine on the ice. Nothing has been heard of the twenty-nine men since that day, Aug.

12. The party got back to the ship and on Aug. 14 made another start. With eight tn the party Capt, Whltesldes, fcls wife, and six men. They took a small canvas Into which they put a week's provisions.

It -was a heavy load' for the little craft, but this waa the last hope they had. Only the fact that the sea was compartlvely quiet accounts for the miraculous escape, for any rough weather would have Instantly pwainped them. They got Into clear water In a few hours, and, paddling through the fog and darkness, avoided, as best they rouia, ia drilling ice. xney pusnea on ior hours, when they could go no further, and they got out and walked over the Ice. For sixty hours they kept on, first walking and now taking to the small boat.

At last land was sighted. The land proved to be Copper Island, a barren, desolate spot, from which they were resenwd- the following day by the Bear. Capt. Whltesldes thinks the men left on the ice are surely lost. A WOMAN'S SHATTERED IDOL Mr.

Bnwa of Haatlactoa Repudiates Her Former Hero, Whom Her Hsibasa Had Tresaeea, HUNTINGTON. I Sept chapter has been added to the Brown elope-- ment case, which set all the residents of this town and Fair Ground to laughing last week. At that time the pretty twenty-year-old wife of Mortimer Brown became Interested simultaneously In a Bummer novel and a pair of mustaches belonging to one Charles Ward McDevltt. As a result of this combination Mrs. Brown packed her trunks and sewing machine and tagged them for New York.

McDevltt was to be her escort, but fate had decreed otherwise. On his arrival at the station he found, be-rides Mrs. Brown. Mr. Brown and a club.

The result was a three-minute entertainment. Including tragedy, comedy, sprinting, vaulting, the running broad lump, and club, swinging, Mr. Brown being the exponent of the last-named art, while Mr. McDevltt waa establishing new records In the other feats. McDevltt finally concluded he had a pressing engagement in New York, and by a wonderful flying leap landed on the train.

McDevltt's Inadequate conception and interpretation of the role of hero in little drama palled on Mrs. Brown's artistic soul, and after the show was over she was glad to go home with her husband. The second chapter of the story comes In the form of two public statements one from Mr. Brown and the other from his wife. loth statements, however, were written by Mrs.

Brown. Mr. Brown's statement is terse and vigorous, as becomes a man who has confidence tn his argumentative powers and Is sure of his facts. It runs something like this: Mortimer Brown Bays that Charles McDevltt was the easiest man he ever done up with a small club, and If I am built of light timber be was nothing but a flea tiite to me, for I could outrun him and handle him with ease. I made up ray mind to flght or die before McDevltt would run away with my wife.

I will give him to understand that I am boss, and hot him. If McDevltt ever shows his face again at the Brown residence he wilt be tarred and feathered and rode on a rail through a ties of cat briars." These few gentle hints serve to ventilate the feelings of the head of the house, and are followed by the Individual statement of Mrs. Brown. It begins with a few comments on various personal qualities of Mr. McDevltt.

and concludes as' follows: Brown Is very well contented at home attending to her household duties, and she will never have another stranger come and "top at her house in the manner that Mc-levitt has done, for she Is down black on a liar, and he is one. I will swear to God that If McDevltt comes here and "my husband is not at home, I will keep a box of red pepper the shelf ready and waiting for him. There are no indications that McDevltt longs to again take up his residence In Fair Ground, and the incident la probably Closed. At the annual nreet-Inx of the State Prison Commission to-day XJspenard Stewart of New York was elected President for the third successive term. Kelson Davenport of Troy waa elected Vice President to succeed Kolx-rt Jdontanye. Auxusiua enerman 01 rwew wanimore was re-electd Secretary, and Philip J. Roosa tt iildtlietown was selected as general of-lice aasistant, at a salary of 1, a year. Comnnissioners Boyd and Remington re-tiorted the result of their investigation of the published reports that the number of prisoner in the Klnga County Penitentiary -who had gone Insane was unusually large and was due to the enforced idleness of the prisoners.

The report states that there was but one more case of Insanity this year than last, and that none of the cases of Insanity waa caused by enforced Idleness. The report further states that every one of the 73S prisoners In the penitentiary, not air-k or otherwise Incapacitated, is at work. The ccrrmhtee concludes ita n-port by saying: "We believe that to-day the tax-La vers of King County are receiving-. In the way of decreased cost of supplies and labor, for county Institutions, In the im provement of public buildings, in the grad ing and Improvement of waste land, far more profit than under the system of convict labor heretofore In vogue in the penitentiary."
