THE STATE JOURNAL, LANSING, MICHIGAN, MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1934 WOMAN DOCTOR AWAITS TRIAL Is Charged with Murdering Physician with 'Poison Highball' GREENWOOD, Jan. 22 (AP)In stolid silence Dr. Sarah Dean, attractive Greenwood child specialist, was here Monday to stand trial on a charge of murder in connection with the alleged "poison whisky highball" death of her medical associate, Dr. John Preston Kennedy, Greenwood surgeon. Doctor Kennedy charged in a reputed deathbed statement last August that he was dying from the effects of poison administered to him in midnight meeting between Doctor Dean and himself at the residence of the woman physician, The statement said that Doctor Kennedy tried to treat himself after detecting a metallic taste in the drink, but failing, he had to call in other medical assistance and was taken to Jackson for treatment.

Doctor Dean, indicted on a murder charge after the body of Doctor nedy had been secretly exhumed and examined, has been free under bond awaiting trial. She has never mentioned the case publicly except to press surprise. BLAST ROCKS CAR; THUGS ARE NABBED Two Men Charged with Robbing Safe; Explosion Gives Them Away DETROIT, Jan. 22 (AP) Two men were held on safe robbery charges Monday because small charge of their nitroglycerine automobile, exploded causing prematurely to strike 8 telephone pole. Police said it had been taken from a drug store. The men gave their names as Walter Tylczak and Stanley Basman. They were not seriously injured by the blast or the resulting accident. They said the car probably was one used by four men who engaged in a running gun battle with police November 20 after taking a safe from a drug store.

Emily Stephens, 41, wife of Glenn Stephens of 132 East Barnes avenue, Sunday morning. Besides the husband, she is survived by one son, Edward Meyers of Lansing, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harke of Russia, Adolph and Edward Harke both of this city and one brother and two sisters in Russia. Mrs.

Stephens was a member of the Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran church and had been a resident of Lansing for the past 14 years. The body was taken to the Estes-Leadley Funeral home where services will be held at 1 p. m. Tuesday, the Rev. F.

Mary A. Heiser, 46, wife of Henry Heiser of 916 South Sycamore street, died Sunday morning. Besides the husband, she is survived by two sons, Adolph and Julius, one daughter, Julia, two sisters, Mrs. Huldah Wirth of Frazee, and Josephine Schaefer of Lansing, two brothers, August Schaefer, Frazee, and Richard of Wilton, N. D.

Mrs. Heiser was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran church and was very active in all church work. Funeral services will be held at the church at 2 p. m. Wednesday, the Rev.

George Bubolz officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Hope cemetery. The body will be at the Estes- Funeral home until time for the service. Christian F.

Metzger Christian F. Metzger, 65, of 522 Birch street, died Monday morning following a long illness. He is survived by the wife, Clara, one son. Albert W. of Lansing, two daughters, Mrs.

Emma Craig of Chicago and Mrs. Minnie Lyon of Lansing, five grandchildren, two brothers, Jacob Metzer of Lansing and Edward Metzger of Petoskey, also two sisters. Mrs. Hattie Schwab and Mrs. Eva Storm, both of Battle Creek.

Mr. Metzger was a member of Emanuel First Evangelical Luthern church. The body was taken to the EstesLeadley Funeral home where services will be held at 3. p. m.

Since the opening of last Saturday night 41,000 persons have been admitted. Sunday's attendance was 21,852, a figure which the officlals said never had been duplicated on a holiday. 22 (AP)John H. McCooey, the big boss of Brooklyn politics, is dead. He was the 1 leader for almost a quarter of a century of the democratic party in Brooklyn. He died Sunday at 69 from heart disease. Throughout his reign as democratic boss, McCooey was a staunch supporter of Tammany hall and his death is seen by political observers as the end Tammany's domination of the democratic party in New York city.

It is regarded as almost certain that he would be succeeded by a leader who is satisfactory to supporters of President Roosevelt and who will run the Brooklyn organization as a part of the democratic state organization and not as an auxiliary to Tammany. McCooey's death came unexpectedly, although he had been in poor health for more than wwo years.
