Eicher, pastor, in Assembly of God church at 800 S. 24th St. the sanctuary of the new First -(Staff Photo by George Vallillee) A red-carpeted aisle leads past the 20 pews, also built of matchsticks, to an illuminated altar inlaid with mother of pearl. The 14 stations of the cross line the walls, spaced between stained glass windows (nylon hoisery dyed red and blue), and a miniature crystal chandelier is used to light the entire sanctuary. A dozen 12-watt bulbs are wired into the chandelier so that no electrical cord is necessary for illumination.

The walls of the small edifice are a double thickness to provide strength and prevent warping, one side on the diagonal and the other in a certi-cal-horizontal pattern. Groux, whose patron saint is Saint Leo, had to burn off each match head used in construction, smooth and sand it, and then cut and mitre the tiny piece of wood. He also used three coats of shellac and two outer lacquer coats for the church's finish. A former interior decorator, Groux is now a window washer in Battle Creek. He came to the Battle Creek Sanitarium in 1966 as a patient.

Patience and thousands of hours of work went into the construction of the church. It will be on display at the L. W. Robinson Co. through Christmas Day.
