SPORTS THURSDAY, OCT. 17, 1985 BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER 2C JeSs' Mo' scoring outouirstt jeffiisoims Red Wiimgs goals and not get them back on an Tho Associated Pfa DETROIT Paul MacLean, Dale Hawerchuk and Brian Mullen combined for 126 goals for the Winnipeg Jets a season ago, so when they came to Detroit with just two goals in three games something figured to give. Something did. MacLean scored two goals, Mullen one and Hawerchuk collected four assists Wednesday night as the Jets posted their first National Hockey League victory of the season, a 4-3 triumph over the winless Detroit Red Wings. "Everything we did in the first goaltender, the Detroit club said it was recalling Chris Pusey from its Adirondack farm club.

Pusey is expected to join the team today. three games didn't work," said MacLean, who opened the scoring while the Jets held a two-man advantage 2:05 into the game and added his second of the night before the first period was over to increase the Jets lead to 3-0. "Personally, I stopped trying to be something I'm not. I went back to just doing the things that got me here the bumping and grinding and working the corners." MacLean collected his first goal of the season when be. poked his own rebound past starting Detroit goalie Eddie Mio for the Jets' early lead and assisted on Dave Ellett's power- shot goal at 16:33 to trim the lead to play marker 40 seconds later.

Mullen added his first of the season midway through the second period to increase the lead to 4-0, a margin the Jets held by killing off four consecutive Detroit powerplays. Winnipeg goalie Brian Hayward faced just 1 5 shots over the first two periods, but lost his bid for shutout when defenseman John Barrett's slapshot eluded him early in the final period. Detroit mounted a late comeback keyed by Gerard Gallant's penalty 4-2. John Ogrodnick scored 23 seconds later for the Red Wings and the final three minutes became a bit hectic for the Jets. "That was a case of the referee (Ron Fournier) changing the complexion of the game," said Jets' coach Barry Long.

"If the guy has a clear breakaway I can see it but the penalty shot was asinine." The Red Wings failed to capitalize on eight power-play chances for the second night in a row. They have not scored on their last 17 man-advantage situations. "You can't give up power-play equal basis," said Red Wings coach Harry Neale. "A lot of guys who play a lot on the power play are getting rattled. They have to realize we have two minutes.

"Right now, it looks like we have a 10-second power play." Winnipeg had opened the season with three straight defeats. Detroit dropped its third straight contest after a season-opening tie with the Minnesota North Stars. After the game, the Red Wings announced that Mio had aggravated a left knee injury. AN UNIDENTIFIED FAN who tumbled out of the stands and into the Kansas City bullpen during the Royals' American League playoff game with the Blue Jays in Toronto was not injured, officials said. The fan appeared to be intoxicated when he fell in the ninth inning, security officials at Exhibition Stadium said. Compiled from The Associated Press FOOTBALL KENNETH DAVIS, former Texas Christian star running back, said Wednesday he has decided not to go through with his 1 3 million law suit against the National Football League because of a decision by the NFL last week barring him from playing in the league this year. "I am not suing the NFL and that's what it all boils down to. We knew from the beginning that we only had a 50-50 chance (for a supplemental draft)," Davis said.

"I've accepted their decision. So why would I go out and sue the NFL? All I want to do is go ahead and graduate and play football." He said the filing of the suit in California Superior Court was a mistake. LEON EVANS, free agent defensive end who has yet to play a regular-season NFL game, was signed by the Detroit Lions. The 6-5, 282-pound Evans was signed as a rookie free agent by the Washington Redskins in 1983 but was released prior to that season. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 1984, but spent the season on the injured reserve list, the Lions said.

The Eagles waived Evans last week MARK HAYNES, New York Giants All-Pro cornerback, ended his six week holdout by signing a new contract, the team announced. Terms were not disclosed.
