Francis 0 4 Third-quarter surge leads to 30-17 win Associated Press GREENVILLE, N.C. Jerris McPhail raced 70 yards for a score on the first play of the second half as East Carolina overcame a sluggish opening 30 minutes to beat Central Michigan 30-17 on a rainy Saturday. The Pirates (2-1), coming off road games against ranked opponents Tennessee and Syracuse, scored 17 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and snap a three-game losing streak in home openers. McPhail finished with a career-high 178 yards on 20 carries his second 100-yard game of the season after replacing the school's career rushing leader, Junior Smith. The Chippewas (1-1), who turned the ball over six times, saw their seven-game string of regular-season wins halted.

Central Michigan scored two touchdowns in the final 5 14 minutes to make the score respectable. McPhail's dash up the middle took 11 seconds and appeared to spur the Pirates after a dismal offensive showing in the first half, highlighted only by an 81-yard scoring pass from Marcus Cran-dell to Mitchell Galloway. After a change of possession, Travis Darden's second fumble recovery of the day near midfield led to Galloway's 2-yard scoring run 5:02 into the third quarter for a 27-3 lead. McPhail's 35-yard run on the first play of that drive set up the score. E.
