Aug. 26. 1994 GREATER LANSING nLSSTT AREA Two troopers assigned to Ypsilanti Two area natives who recently graduated from the Michigan State Police Training Academy have been as- signed to patrol duties at the Ypsilanti Post law, criminal investigation, crime scene processing, patrol techniques, physical fitness, first aid, firearms instruction, defensive tactics and precision driving techniques. Apple queen pageant seeks applicants The Michigan State Horticultural Society Auxiliary and the Michigan Apple Committee are accepting applications for the 1994 Michigan Apple Queen pageant, which will be Dec 6 in Grand Rapids during the Society's annual convention.

The pageant is open to any single woman 17 to 25 years old who lives in Michigan and has an affiliation with the state's apple industry. Contestants will be judged on a number of variables, including poise, professionalism and knowledge of the apple industry. The queen will receive a $1,500 scholarship and each of the two queen's court members will receive $250 scholarships. Pageant applications are available from Ellen Parker of the Michigan State Horticultural Society Auxiliary, 871-3031, or the Michigan Apple Committee, 669-8353. Applications must be received by Oct 1.

CHARLOTTE Sheriff wins health accreditation The Eaton County Sheriffs Department recently received an accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care in recognition of health services that meet standards developed by the National Commission on Health Care. This accreditation helps the department in limiting its liability for inmate medical care as well as insuring reasonable medical care to the inmates housed in the correctional facility. This is the third year the department has received the accreditation. EAST LANSING Volunteers needed for Listening Ear The Listening Ear is seeking volunteers willing to participate in training Sept 29 to Oct 9. The two-week training involves intense exercises that will prepare people to be able to help others in a crisis situation.

GRAND LEDGE Residents invited to join 100 Club The Lincoln Brick Park 100 Club is seeking new members who want to help with Phase III development of the park, just north of Grand Ledge. The 100 Club, sponsored by the Eaton County Parks and Recreation Commission, is open to individuals and businesses. For a $100 tax deductible donation, with all proceeds going directly to the Lincoln Brick Park Development Fund, club members will receive a Sept 17 dinner cruise for two aboard the Princess Laura riverboat a 1994 Lincoln Brick 100 Club membership certificate, an au-! thentic Lincoln Brick and a 1995 Eaton County Parks pass. I Phase in of the park development includes additional parking and play area, an educational facility, trail improvements and a pedestrian bridge over the Grand River that will connect the park with Fitzgerald Park.

Total cost is estimated at $310,200, with 75 percent coming from Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant funds and the remaining $77,550 from local sources. So far, only $4,000 of the local match is in the bank: For information call Steve Tuma at the Parks LANSING Sign up scheduled for youth soccer league The Lansing Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a fall youth soccer league for children who will be 5 to 14 years old as of Dec. 31. Jerome Strong, rights leader Lansing State Journal memorial service for Jerome Strong, former deputy director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, will be Saturday at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, according to the Rev. Michael Murphy of Lansing. The service for Strong, who died Aug. 14, will be held at 1 p.m. at the Corporate Education Center at EMU, Murphy said.

His funeral was Aug. 20 in Muskegon. Liver disease forced Strong to quit as deputy director of the state Department of Civil Rights in 1991. Strong had served as a policy specialist with Gov. Jim Blan-chard's Cabinet Council on Human Investment, vice chairman of the Michigan Coalition for Children and Families, president of the Washtenaw County American Civil Liberties Union and legislative-political director of the Michigan Conference of NAACP branches.

He was preceded, in death by his son, George Allen; his parents, George and Margaret Bellgowan; and his brother, Frank.
