4D Todav Lansing State Journal Friday, April 30, 1993 ports anchor Staudt leads changing WILX news department By MIKE HUGHES Lansing State Journal For WILX-TV (Channel 10), this was a week of big changes. The biggest came Thursday: Tim Staudt, the veteran sportscast-er, was put in charge of the news. "When I suggested it, Tim couldn't believe it," owner Paul Brissette said. "But he came back with a marvelous presentation, full of energy and ideas." Beginning Monday. Staudt, 44, will be vice-president of news and sports while continuing to chor sportscasts.

Doug Chalgian, the current news director, will be one of four people given titles of associate news director. "I've thought about something like this for a number of years," Staudt said. "But it came up now very quickly. This has been a hairy week." The move may be unprecedented, but Staudt's colleagues sounded upbeat. "Tim and I have been friends and colleagues for a long time," said news anchor Kathy Schmaltz.

"I think everything is looking up." Even Chalgian took a positive view: "It's a reorganization," he said. "There are a lot of changes." Those include: DThe station had a groundbreaking Thursday, to double its Lansing space. By November, Brissette said, it should be doing its newscasts from here, not Jackson. Bill Snider, the general manager, has been put on three-month leave. Brissette, whose 10-station chain is based in Memphis, has taken charge.

BThe station's long impasse over a union contract may be near a conclusion. "We had a tremendous, 6 14 -hour meeting," Brissette said. "I think we're very, very close." For a time, the station seemed overwhelmed. Union members approved a strike vote the 5:30 p.m. newscast was dropped the Jackson-Lansing logistics were tough news ratings were fine by national standards but dwarfed by the powerhouse numbers at WLNS (Channel 6).

Money seemed tight, with Brissette putting his stations up for sale. Then he reversed direction, taking them off the block; he also put Snider on leave. "It's been a really tough couple of years for him," Brissette said. "I'd say he was pretty burned out; he needed time of I'm not sure what will happen after this." Brissette is spending this week in town, triggering the changes. That includes the groundbreaking for the expansion, at the corner of Edgewood Boulevard and American Road.

The Staudt move was the surprise. "He has big plans," Brissette says. "He's got some real adminis-trative abilities." Staudt's background isn't pure dunk shots. His father, Tom Staudt, was general marketing manager for Chevrolet; his brother, Greg, owns Gulf Harbor Marina in Florida. "I can't tell you how many times I've consulted with them." But does he know the news? Both news anchors are sports buffs.

(Schmaltz is a Tiger zealot; Gruber was a wrestling champ.) They say it works both ways. "We all work together," Schmaltz said. "We're always talking about news or sports stories." Gruber agreed. "He's been in the market for 22 years. If you're talking about broadcasters, you'd have to start with Kathy Schmaltz or Tim Staudt." That's unusual for such a mobile business.

Staudt grew up in East Lansing and Gruber in William-ston; Schmaltz has lived in the area since graduating from Michigan State University in 1974. Dre and Lover went city-to-city to whip up interest in the feature, which wound up getting beaten only by "Indecent Proposal" on the latest national box-office charts. "I was going to make a movie about me offering people a million dollars to sleep with Ed, but someone took the idea," deadpans Dre.

He adds, "That's why I feel we're really No. 1 and 2" at the box office. Gannett News Service On the heels of a terrific opening weekend for their "Who's the Man?"
