Physically Frail, He Succumbs to Year-Long Illness. DENVER. Jan. 11. Charles James Hughes.

Democratlo United States Senator from Colorado, died in his home here to-day after nearly a year's illness. He had been unconscious since yesterday, and passed from coma almost Impercep tibly into death. The immediate cause or demise was pernicious anaemia, with com plications of myelitis. A trip to the Ha waiian Islands last Fall failed to improe his health, and shortly after his return he was confined to his bed and remained there until the end. Senator Hughes left a widow and four children.

The news caused general sorrow throughout the city. At the State House the flag was half-masted and House and Senate soon adjourned. No funeral arrangements have been made. The death ot Senator Hughes adds Import nee to the present session of th Democratic Legislature which will chojj his successor to serve until March 3, 1915. Even at this hour plans for the election are making, but tentative candidates remain in the background.

Putriams DEMAND ROYALTY FOR FRENCH MUSIC Society of Authors Established Here to Collect Fees from Managers of Concerts. ORCHESTRAS ARE INCLUDED When They Pity French Compositions Copyrighted in America Tax Imposed on Lllla Ormond. Manag-ers concerts In New Tork are encounterinr 'a curious obstacle to the ever here money is taken at auur. or by hotel or restaurant orchestras, of any French composition which is copyrighted In America and the composer of which belongs to the society. Miss Lllla Ormond sane an air from Debussy's L'Enfant Prodigue at her concert at Mendelssohn Hall yesterday, and the Soclete des AutaurS decided that she must pay one-half of 1 per cent, of the gross receipts of her concert for this privilege.

This of course meant only one-half a cent on the dollar, but it would mean a good deal. say. If the receipts were $jjO, to pay for one song- The society has sent notifications of its purpose to everv musical manager In New York and also a slip containing quotations from the copyright law, which, however, cannot be said tp apply very distinctly to the matter In hand. It is probable that one of two things will occur as a result either some one will go to law about the matter or French music will not be put on concert programmes. in Paris for some years. There every concert giver or theatrical manager must pay per cent, of the gross receipts of his concert to the society, in England quite the reverse situation exists. There singers are paid for singing the as the English publishers realize that It makes the sale of the music greater. of mure there would be little demand for the published music of the French composers in New York if It were never played here, and the managers say that rather than pay royalties for performances of these works will not play them and their artists will not sing them. Mr.

Robbilard explains the matter by saving that In the first place the law exists and should be enforced and that In the second place the French composers see no reason why they should not be receiving royalties for American performances of their works. The outcome of all this la likely to be extremely interesting. BIDE-A-W'EE H0MEBENEF1T. Wilton Lackaye and Mme. Pilar- Morin Among Artists to Appear, Douglas J.
