THE BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER AND NEWS Wednesday, December 13, 1967 12 Won't Be Deterred by Critics-LBJ New Court Bill Suffers Blows not going to be inflamed by a bunch of political, selfish men MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP)-Presldent Johnson says he will not be deterred, Influenced or who want to advance their own inflamed by his Vietnam war critics "regardless of my polls and regardless of the elections." Departing from his prepared text in a nationally televised and broadcast speech to the AFL-CIO convention here Tues education, antipoverty, medical care and Social Security. The President's pledge to stand firm on his Vietnam policies drew renewed backing from AFL-CIO President George Meany. "We support you, Mr. President, and we urge you to carry on," said Meany.

The only part of Johnson's speech met with silence was his plea for voluntary wage restraints, similar to his request last week for price restraint from business. Rising prices, Johnson said, are "simply murder to all labor and to people with low or moderate incomes." The labor delegates earlier this week said they wouldn't be bound by any voluntary restraints, such as the former wage hikes to 3.2 per cent a year. Johnson's greeting in the plush hotel convention hall bore the trappings of a political meeting, with delegates waving signs reading "We Support Johnson in Vietnam" and "AH the Way with LBJ" as a band played "Hello Dolly!" which Johnson supporters translate as "Hello Lyndon!" Johnson grinned and flashed an "O.K." hand sign at one lone delegate who shouted "All the Way with LBJ" in the hush just before the President began speaking. The speech climaxed a week-long AFL-CIO convention marked by total support for Johnson on virtually all issues, except for a handful of delegates who want the labor feder day night, the President said: "I am going down the center of the road doing my duty as I see it for the best of my country." interest." The President also had harsh words for congressional Republicans, terming them "wooden soldiers" warring on progress. He asked the representatives of the 14-million-member "house of Labor" to help Democrats elect a "great Congress" in 1968.

About 2,000 convention delegates, officials and guests frequently interrupted Johnson's jibes at the Republicans with cheers, applause and laughter. "The people know that the old Republican buggy can only go one way backwards downhill," Johnson said. "That old Republican buggy has been colliding with us all year long," he said of GOP efforts in Congress to block or alter his proposals on The representatives of organized labor roared their approval when Johnson said he would always be ready to hear and act on any proposal for ending the Vietnam war. And their volume tem, many judges in the smaller counties would have little work to do. He also noted that in 13 of the 34 counties which Swallow's amendments were intended to affect, the probate judges are not attorneys.

Holbrook and the House Judiciary Committee had hoped all duties of the district courts would be performed by lawyer-judges. Meanwhile, Holbrook's court bill came under fire again fnni Wayne County Auditor Richard Austin, who met with louse members from Wdyne County and urged them to defeat the measure in its prrwut form. By the end of Tuesday's long House session the chief sponsor of the big court bill said he may end up voting against it himself. Approved with four votes to spare were a series of amendments by Rep. Miranda, freed by an historic Supreme Court decision on a rape charge, will have to serve a 20 to 25 year prison term on a robbery conviction. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Miranda'i rap conviction in a precedent-settling decision that said a felony suspect must be advised of his constitutional rights before making a statement to police. Miranda had sought freedom on a previous robbery charge under the so-called "Miranda rule," but the Arizona Supreme Court rejected his petition Tuesday, nothing that the federal court ruling was not retroactive. Jobless Rate Takes Sharp Drop WASHINGTON (AP) The national unemployment rate fell four points in November, the sharpest drop in more than six years, the Labor Department reported today.

The jobless rate of 3.9 per cent last month reversed the upward trend in unemployment during September and October and returned the over-all rate to the range that has prevailed since late 1965. Record Dope Shipment Seized DETROIT (AP) Federal narcotics agents have recovered 230 pounds of marijuana, enough to bring $238,000 when sold on the streets, in what they described as the largest seizure of marijuana in Michigan in the last 30 years. A shipment of 107 one-kilogram bricks of marijuana was seized last Thursday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in three footlockers. Two days earlier, U.S. narcotics agents said they arrested Rockcy Stoup, 25, and his wife, both of Detroit, at the airport and confiscated two bricks of marijuana, 12 ounces of pure hashish and 8 ounces of mescaline, a hallucinogen similar to LSD.
