and Canada--Founded 1904 Slayer of 7 Given Life PONTIAC (AP) A 34-yearold factory worker was sentenced to mandatory life in prison on a first degree murder conviction in connection with the ax and gun slayings of seven members of his family in September 1964. The man, William G. Gravlin of nearby was sentenced by Judge' James S. Thorburn of Oakland County Circuit Court. The judge found Gravlin guilty last month after a week non-jury trial.

Gravlin was tried only on the death of a 16 year old stepdaughter, Judith Ann Bentley. Also killed were his wife, daughter and four other stepchildren. His daughter was shot to death. The others were slain with an ax. Gravlin, a onetime fireman, had been in Ionia State Hospital until last November when doctors said he was capable of assisting in his own defense.

His court-appointed attorney, Joseph L. Hardig said he would appeal the conviction. Hardig argued that Gravlin was insane at the time of the crime. The judge ruled after hearing testimony from three psychiatrists that Gravlin knew the difference between right and wrong at the time. Millage Rejected BRIDGEPORT (AP) Voters have rejected a 14-mill levy to operate Bridgeport schools.

The vote was against the proposed two-year millage package which would have renewed eight mills and added six mills in property tax. Supt. Martin Atkins of Bridgeport Schools said the board of education would call another election within 45 days. CLASSIFIED WANT-ADS PH. WO 4-7161 HOURS OPEN 8:00 A.M.
