The object of the clinic is to increase the knowledge and improve the techniques of track and field athletes in the schools and colleges. "Over the years a lot of the big names in harness racing have crossed the finish line here to go on to greater heights," says Ernest Cusack, veteran among the legion of local horsemen. MAY LOWER MARK -1 ''We've had Rusty Range here and The Big Bear and this year that good Eaton Rapids horse, Ebony's Bachelor, is on the card. He'll probably lower the track mark of 2:05," Cusack predicts. This man Cusack is a narrative in himself. At 59 and a corrections officer at the Ionia Reformatory, he has been in horse racing more than 20 years, leading an idyllic life on the banks of arby Morrison Lake where his 40 acre farmstead provides a pleasant pastoral scene of mares and their young colts nibbling on purple clover heads.

It's not all that dreamy, though, for just this week Cusack lost one of his prize broodmares, Lake 0' Lass, in a foaling death. The colt was also stillborn. Ernie is a great promoter for harness racing and told about what is happening in Michigan's current explosion of interest in Standardbrods during a visit with relatives in Oklahoma. He was interviewed on radio and the station was swamped with calls. There is no harness racing in the Sooner State though there are many people, he says, who would like to see it started.

The father of 10 children, ages nine to 28, he was chosen recently in a Grand Rapids contest as "1970 Father of the Year" on the basis of his personal example in clean living and teaching of high moral standards for his youngsters. "Racing has been good to me," he says. "It is a fun hobby but sometimes there are other returns." (AP) -Carol Mann, who last year made more money on the professional golf tour than any woman before her, wants out.

"To get out of this trap you either have to do it gradually or make a quick break," she said Thursday after tying for the lead in the U.S. Women's Open Golf Tournament. "For it to be a quick break, someone would have to offer me $20,000 to $30,000 a year, and no one's come to me with a check, so I'll have to make it a planned, gradual withdrawal." The first step, said Miss Mann, is a teaching pro job beginning July 12 at the Hunt Valley Golf Club, which opens Saturday in Baltimore. As for the rest of the season, she said, "I always will at least go to defend my titles." One such defense is in Kansas City in August, the other in Corpus Christi, Tex, in October. Miss Mann, who has been playing out of Cincinnati, says someday she'd like to go into television, possibly with a woman's talk show, but maintaining her sports identity, which she calls a "natural, useful tool." "Also," she added, "someday I'd like to get married, even though by then I'll probably be too old to have children." Miss Mann goes into today's second round tied at two-un-der-par 69 with Donna Caponi, defending champion from North Hollywood, Calif.

Dayton and Flint, members of the league last year will not field teams this season.

Anyone interested in trying out for the semi-pro team is invited, according to Wally Bennett, the team's public rela-t i director. Prospective players should wear sweat clothes, and be ready to go Monday evening, Bennett said. "We're hoping for a big turnout," Bennett said. He said about 75 per cent of last year's championship team is expected to be out for the team again this season. The All Stars also expect several former Continental League and ex-Michigan State players to try out the team.

The All Stars will practice regularly at Haslett High through July in preparation for the opening of the regular MFL season Aug. 8.
