"How do you mean, strange?" Bart sprawled a chair by tha" kitchen table and picked at a bowl of fruit while Kate was making coffee. "Oh I don't know. Sort of quiet, as if she vere mulling' something over in her mind." "Somebody's, new "No, no. Phoebe's not that sort. She has never gone in for artistic posing about her business.

And you know she has put up the cottage for sale." Bart sat up. "You mean the cottage in the country? But she only Just bought it "I know. Just the same she told me to put It up for sale. Last week. And she was a little short with me when I protested.

Not like her at all. The real estate market's slow now and it won't be easy to dispose of it I suggested Jokingly that we might turn it back to Uncle Billy and she got quite snappish." "Cash getting low?" Kate shook her head. "Never higher. We netted twenty thou-sand last year." "Oh, well He put sugar into the coffee that Kate had poured, but there was a little frown of worry between his dark It was mid-morning, an unusual time for a visit from nearby St. -Theresa's, but he had a couple of hours free and he had dropped over to the aristocratic old Fifty-sixth Street house that held the living quarters of Kate and Phoebe on its top floor, and-Phoebe, below.

Both Bart and Kate turned' quickly as the door opened. "Bart darling!" it was Phoebe." "What a nice surprise. In the middle of the morning!" He hugged her and gave her a smacking kiss. "I'm being transferred to surgery today and I want you to design me something very special in operating gowns. Have some coffee?" "Thanks.

Kate, that man from- -Bianchini Is waiting. I think you had better see him." Kate took a final sip of coffee and rose. As she went out the-door she exchanged a swift glance with Bart When mother and- -son were alone, he reached across the table and touched her hand with affectionate concern. "Feeling all right, Toots?" "Of course." "Kate said you've been off your feed lately." "Oh Kate." She seemed to dispose of the matter, but he refused to accept the dismissal. "Says you're trying to sell the house you Just bought." The hand holding her cup paused half way her mouth' She set the cup back in its saucer.

WTMV Afternoon Rhythm. dispute us except the Indians that we were leaving far behind. "We brought you to India as our and you lived and grew in loveliness and filled our lives with joy and promise of all good things. And when your 'mother' died, you carried on her work as if the same gallant blood flowed in your veins. WAS IT so monstrous that thing we did? I don't know.

"I only know that now that am about to leave you, I must right that wrong if it were a wrong. I have always kept track secretly of the man who Is your real father, and it has not been hard, for his fortunes have prospered and he is head of a great business company. You must go to him. You must tell him. Let him decide whether I have cheated him.

It is my wish It is my wish. And only because it was his wish, his last wish, she had come here to this strange, alien place. Down from the hills, back through the jungles, across the oceans, across the great, endless land that was America to this. Standing there in the cold October night, she shut her eyes and her mind to that first meeting. To the man who was her father, to the woman he had married, to the irascible, comic old fellow who was part of their household.

She wanted to cry out, to pierce through to eternity. No, no, NO! It was no monstrous thing you did. You did him no wrong. He She couldn't put it Into words, even in her own mind. She could only feel it, sense it with a sense that was neither sight, sound, touch, smell or taste, but rather some sixth perception of the feelings.

She had come to him across time and the oceans and he had opened his home to her but not his heart Was it because that heart was still frozen by the tragedy of young death so long ago, or was it because there was no heart there, either to freeze or burst into flame? He had gone through the empty motions of fatherhood, but all the time she was conscious of some strange emotion. Was it the pain of old sorrow, was it some ineptness or gaucherie of her own alien spirit, or was it some deep uneasiness whose source she could not fathom? But he had tried after a fash-Ion. She must not be unfair. He had made an attempt to reconstruct with her those early days of her infancy 20 years before which she had found recorded In Dr. Robert Shaw's diary.

But she had drawn back, hugging to herself the little red book. Some strange, fierce loyalty to the man who had not been her father kept those pages, in which he had spread out his heart, inviolate against the man who was her father. Her shoulders sagged with the exhaustion of too much remembering, too much groping and analyzing, and a dry sob caught in her throat. But she Jerked herself up sharply and a little frisson shot through her at the touch on her arm. She turned.

It was Jay-son Plaice. He had come upon her quietly in the darkness. He was looking down at her, smiling, faintly mocking, appraising. "There's rain on your eyelashes," he was saying, "and and you know you're rather beautiful." CHAPTER IV. AFTER DR.

SHAW, the good man Tessa still though of as father, was buried, she had gathered together his instruments and his few selfless possessions. It was then that she had found the little old red leather book that was the diary Dr. Shaw had kept back in his early days as a medical missionary in the north before he had been transferred to India. And with It was the letter that he had written her when at last he had known that his fate was She had read it and felt grief a thousand times more shattering than death. "I am not your father, except in love and service.

You must go to him now, your real father. It is my wish No need to re-read It now. It's words and had long since been written Indelibly in her brain. twenty years ago when my wife, the woman you called and I were medical missionaries in northern Canada. We maintained a distant station at a place called Wanataskee Landing among the Indians where we were the only white people.

Until we were joined one day by Tessa Devlin. "We had never seen her before, nor she us, when she arrived in the company of a group of natives who had been down to Chlca-toumi, 200 miles to the south. She was frail and pretty and frightened of what lay before her. "Her husband, Tom Devlin, had left her in Chlcatouml while he went north to explore a gold claim he had staked out the previous year. He had not known when he left nor had ahe, that she was pregnant.

"She had no friends In Chlcatouml, for she and her husband had been there only a short while In the burly-burly of a boom town gold rush. And so she begged to be taken north to our mission station. For two reasons, I was the only doctor for hundreds of miles, and our station lay along the trail through which her husband planned to return in the fall. Well, he returned in the fall, all right, but by that time she was dead in childbirth and you were a month-old infant. "I pass quickly over these events for you will find them recorded in more detail in the old diary which I kept during those early years in the north.

Your father left you in our care, and continued south. He had found that his claim bore promise of being a very rich strike and he wanted to get capital to develop it. "He promised to return for you. He didn't come back for a year, for eighteen months. And all the time you were growing into our hearts, the center of our lives, our happiness, the child your 'mother could never bear.

And then came orders that we were to be transferred from Canada to India, to the other side of the world. "We tried to get in touch with your real father. Once we heard from him. He would be in Chlcatouml But he didn't come, and the day finally arrived when we must go. We wouldn't leave you behind.

There was no one to take care of you. But more than that. "We couldn't tear you out of our hearts without tearing them apart. And so we did a monstrous thing. Or was it so monstrous? We claimed you as our own, and there was no one to N.
