By LARRY PALADINO AP Sports Writer LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) John Hiller has pitched the Detroit Tigers out of many hairy situations. But before the 1978 baseball season gets underway, the ace left-handed reliever will have gone through dozens of close shaves despite being idled from mound duty since July 25 with an injury. Hiller, easily distinguishable before because of his Fu Manchu moustache, has shaved his head. It's as smooth now as his pitching delivery.

"I just figured it was something I wanted to do," said Hiller, during a re-lazing moment in spring training. "I did it last year when I knew I wasn't going Fontaine IHL scoring champ DETROIT (AP) Port Huron center Len Fontaine, who scored a pair of goals in the Flags' final regular-season game, was named the International Hockey League's 1975-76 scoring champion Monday. Fontaine, 28, finished with 53 goals and 59 assists for 112 points in 74 games. Kirk Bowman of the Flint Generals was runnerup with 44 goalsand 63 assists for 107 points. Bowman played in 78 games.

Fontaine and Bowman were the only players in the nine-team IHL to score 100 points or more over the season. Fontaine played briefly with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Michigan Stags of the World Hockey Association between 1972 and 1975. Kalamazoo's Mike Wanchuk, who also flashed the red light 53 times, shared top goal-getting honors with Fontaine. Wan-chuck finished third in the overall scoring derby with 91 points. Muskegon's Don Cutts was the IHL's top goalie, finishing with a 2.82 goals-against average over 58 games and sharing the lead in shutouts with Jim Pettie of Dayton.
