Bob Owchinko, a pitcher from Eastern Michigan, was picked by San Diego in the first round. Jim Parke, a pitcher By The Associated Press The Detroit Tigers received lefthand-ed pitcher Pat Underwood, a 19-year-old senior at Kokomo, High School, in baseball's free agent draft Tuesday.

The Tigers got Underwood on the second choice in the draft. Underwood, a 6-foot, 175-pound southpaw, is the brother of Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher Tom Underwood. The draftee had four no-hitters this spring in high school ball. "He's the type of youngster who won't let you cross the plate," said Bill Lajoie, Tiger director of player development. At the close of the draft session Tuesday, the Tigers had five pitchers, five shortstops, three catchers and two outfielders.

Shortstop Alan Trammell, 18, of Kearny High in San Diego, was drafted after Underwood. He is described as a fierce competitor and has "good running speed, a good arm, great hands and fine instincts," according to the scouts. The Tigers also took three Michigan players: shortstop Glenn Gulliver of White Sox grab Diz Trout's son SOUTH HOLLAND, 111. (AP) Steve Trout recently was graduated from Thornwood High School, went on a backpacking trip in Montana and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox on the first round. The Sox drafted Trout Tuesday, which would make him happy if he knew about.

He's still camping in Montana and could not be reached. The 18-year-old southpaw is one of seven sons of the late Paul "Dizzy" Trout, who pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 1939 to 1952. Trout's catcher for some of those years including the Tigers' 1945 championship season was Paul Richards, now manager of the Young Trout's mother, Pearl, said, "My only regret is that his dad is not here to see this. When we first moved here, I remember him pointing out to a neighbor his seven sons who were playing in a field. He pointed to Steve, who was only five or so at the time, and said, 'That's my ballplayer." The Astros said they would not approach Bannister about signing a contract until Arizona State finishes competing in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The Sun Devils, 62-8 this season, are the No. 1 -ranked team in the country and they face rival Arizona Saturday night in their opening game of the double elimination tournament. Twice an Ail-American, Bannister has blazed his way to a 37-5 record in three varsity seasons at Arizona State.

Employing three effective pitches, Bannister who will be 21 Thursday when the draft is scheduled to end has led the nation in strikeouts the past two years. Bannister's teammate, Ken Lan-dreaux, the sixth player chosen, was selected by the California Angels. A center fielder, he batted .413 with 14home runs and 87 RBI this season. what does he do? He gets another hit and there goes my shutout. "I think he's about the best hitter I've seen so far in this league.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the batting championship." By FRED ROTHENBERG AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) The Atlanta Braves, winners of the Andy Messers-mith free agency sweepstakes earlier this year, get to take the lid off today's secondary phase of the baseball draft and they've narrowed their choice to a pair of speedy Californians. It will be either Gerald Price, an 18-year-old infielder with fast feet and a quick bat, or 19-year-old Ron Roenicke, a switch-hitting center fielder, who will lead off the draft for previously selected but unsigned players. Both Price and Roenicke were selected before by Detroit but went back into the hopper because the figures the Tigers offered to sign were too small. Price, whose brother Mike was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1970 but got cut from their minor league system in 1972, is a freshman at Diablo Valley Junior College in Pleasant Hills, Calif.

This season, Price, a second baseman, batted .400 and knocked in 24 runs in 24 games. Roenicke, whose brother Gary was promoted from the minors to the Montreal Expos this week, is a sophomore at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, Calif. This season, he hit .356, setting a team record with 10 triples. "Then when he threw me three straight fastballs on the outside corner, which I fouled off, I was looking for another one in the same place," he said. The 21-year-old rookie first baseman found it Tuesday night and smashed a long, towering home run off Leonard in the second inning to put the Detroit Tigers into a 2-0 lead over the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers pushed across another tally the next inning on Rusty Staub's RBI single, and the three runs combined with Dave Roberts' pitching accounted for a quick, efficient, 3-1 Detroit victory. Thompson, elevated to the big leagues early this season after Milt May fell injured, was one of four rookies and one second-year man who populated the Tigers' lineup Tuesday night, giving the venerable American League franchise a new, youthful look. For many years a monotony of sameness had enveloped the Tigers.

"The last couple of years we've been in the middle of changing that," noted "A lot of guys are gone Brown, Eddie Brinkman, Al From 1966 to the middle of 74, when Ron LeFlore was brought up, we never had a guy come up (through the farm system) to take a regular spot. All of a sudden we had to do it." Another new face to Tiger fans, although certainly not a rookie, is Roberts. The 31-yearold low-ball throwing left hander has now fashioned a 5-4 mark after coming over from the National League in a multi-player trade last winter. "He's only had two bad outings," said manager Ralph Houk. "He knows how to pitch.

We traded three good young players to get him and it's sure been worth, it." The Royals averted their first shutout since April 18 on Hal McRae's RBI single amid an unsuccessful ninth-inning rally. McRae, Kansas City's blast-hot designated hitter, went three-for-four, raising his average to .356 to seize the American League lead from teammate George Brett, who got one hit in four tries. "I can't find a weakness in that guy," Roberts said of McRae. Battle Creek Cost $25 Call 965-5571 for reservation Presented by Paul Denniston Hypo-Tedinician of the Southern Michigan Human Development Center of Battle Creek DETROIT (AP) Slumping Detroit Tiger pitcher Joe Coleman was sold Tuesday to the Chicago Cubs for an estimated $100,000 in cash and a player to be named after the major league season ends.

The Tigers announced Coleman's contract was bought by the Cubs after every team in the American League waived an interest in the 29-year-old righthander. Tiger management refused to disclose the selling price, but several sources said it was $100,000. "We think we made a pretty good deal," Tiger Manager Ralph Houk said without mentioning a dollar amount. "We figured this was the best deal we could make." Coleman twice won 20 or more games for the club in a single season, but he slipped badly in 1974 and 1975 and appeared headed for another dismal season this year. His record so far is 2-5 and his earned run average soared to 4.86.

In 1973, his premiere season with the Tigers, Coleman posted a 23-15 mark and a 3.53 ERA. Jim Campbell, Tiger executive vice president and general manager, said the vacancy on the Tiger roster will be filled by the time the club returns Friday from its current road trip. Coleman came to Detroit in 1971 from the Washington Senators. After his good showing in 1973, he slipped to 14-12 the following season and 10-18 last year. He appeared in 12 games this year, but was able to complete just one game.
