Caldwell residents stand vigil over remains of ravaged homes In Ore City, a gas line reportedly ruptured, spewing gas over a wide area and causing officials to block highways into the city. There were injuries in Ore City but no confirmed deaths, according to the Upshur County Sheriff's Department.

Several tornado sightings were reported as lines of severe thunderstorms crossed the area. A tornado was reported eight miles south of Gladewater off Texas 135, but the Gladewater Police Department did not have a report of a twister touching down in that area. A broken water line was reported in Overton, according to City Manager Bill Lewanaowski. Most of the town's water supply was cut off from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

However, Lewanaowski said the 10-inch water line was fully repaired and residents had water by midnight. In Louisiana, one of several tornadoes that swept through the northwest corner of the state brought down the roof of a convenience store in Shreveport, leaving several people trapped inside, authorities said. Two or three people were trapped inside the Charter Food Store when the roof collapsed about 7 p.m., said a Caddo Parish deputy who refused to identify himself. At one point Sunday night, 65 Texas counties were under a tornado watch or warning. Two people were killed in Caldwell, about 60 miles, north-.

east of Austin, and eight were injured when a twister cut a 16-mile swath through Burleson County, officials said. Caldwell Mayor William Broad-dus said that in the tornado's half-mile-wide path "the destruction is total." "What is left of homes is nothing more than the concrete foundations," Broaddus said. "The metal and wood from barns siding is up in the trees for miles." Two people were killed in Nor-mangee, about 50 miles northeast of Caldwell, when a tornado touched down shortly after 2 p.m., said Margaret Haislip, a sheriff's dispatcher in Madison County. Two others were injured, she said. Two others died in a tornado near Whitehouse, near Tyler, said Smith County Sheriff's Deputy Johnny Beddingfield.

He said several tornadoes touched down in the area Sunday afternoon. Four other people were injured. part of a mobile home blew over his car while he was driving on Texas 154 near U.S. 259. He was carrying his four children, ages 7, 11, 15, and 16.

After the debris flew over the car, the car began to swerve, trees began to swaV'Smd power lines along the roadway began to arc, Milwood said. He pulled over, helped clear trees from the roadway and assisted sheriff's officers in directing traffic for a time, he said. The twister knocked over a trailer home, jumped a brick home and hit a garage, Milwood said. He described the tornado as small, perhaps 100 feet wide, but said it seemed to skip across a 1 '2-mile path. Milwood said he heard screams and ran to the mobile home where a man had received a broken arm and a gash on his head.

"I grew up in Kansas and am used to (tornadoes)," Milwood said. "We would get in the storm cellar, leave one door closed and one open and watch until it blew the barn down." Milwood said his children were scared but behaved well during the excitement. Several of the injured were taken to hospitals in Longview, where they were reported in stable condition. Nursing supervisor Ilene Rice of Good Shepherd Medical Center said the hospital treated three Diana family members who were injured when a tornado hit their mobile home. Reports from the field indicated the rest of the injuries were minor.

Danny Hill and his wife Cindy were admitted to the intensive care unit in stable condition. Their son, Brandon, 6, was treated and released. Rice said. Rice said GSMC had called in extra personnel for the night, but at 8:30 p.m. they were starting to send employees home.

William Madding of Diana was listed in good and stable condition at Longview Regional Hospital, where he also was treated for injuries resulting from the storm, according to a hospital official. Tornadoes reportedly hit Ore City in Upshur County and the Galloway and Logan communities of Panola County, where a man was reported trapped in a mobile home east of the Old Center community, officials said. Late Sunday, Panola County sheriff's officers were calling for volunteers with wreckers and chain saws to remove large pine trees from several roads to allow rescuers to reach damaged homes. Panola County Judge Mike Parker opened the courthouse in Carthage to provide shelter to In addition to the one death in Palestine, as many as 36 were reported injured there, said Barbara Hart, a spokesman for the Anderson County Sheriff's Department in Palestine. Two people were killed at at least 75 were injured about 4 p.m.

in the Jacksonville area, 25 miles northeast of Palestine, said Barbara Trotter, clinical director of nursing at Nan Travis Hospital in Jacksonville. Most of the injuries were minor, officials said. Several mobile homes were reported demolished at Center in Shelby County from another tornado later in the day. Four injuries were reported there. Among the homes destroyed in Palestine were several that were blown off of a hill and onto U.S.

79, City Manager Warren Driver said. "We are hit hard It looks like an atomic bomb hit," said Don Harris, manager of Palestine radio station KLIS. National Guard units from Panola and Harrison counties were sent to Palestine to help look for victims and provide security. The tornado hit Palestine about 3:30 p.m., cutting a mile-wide track about four miles long through a commercial and heavy industrial section. The tornado was one of several in Anderson County, said Harris.

Semi-trailers in a storage yard were stacked upon one another "like cordwood," Harris said. The city's industrial park suffered heavy damage, officials said. U.S. 69 north of Jacksonville was closed for several hours Sunday night as crews tried to restore downed high-tension power lines, according to Department of Public Safety trooper David Russ. Traffic was rerouted through the city, Russ said.

One tornado also hit the sales and general offices of television station KETK-TV, channel 56, according to station comptroller Roby Somerford. KETK personnel were working Sunday night to repair the damage, he said. A dollar estimate on the damage will not be available until after an insurance adjuster visits grounds today, Somerford said. KETK's studios were not affected. However, the downed power lines on U.S.

69 knocked KETK off the air since electricity could not reach the transmitter, said Somerford. The station was hoping to be back on the air sometime today, he said. Smith County Deputy Sheriff Randy Potts said several tornadoes touched down Sunday afternoon in Smith County, including the one that hit White-house. Other tornadoes were reported Sunday night in Northeast Texas as the storm system continued churning northeasterly through the state. At least four Diana residents were injured as a tornado moved said.

"What we are able to find tomorrow may be about it," said Kellebrew's son, Ronnie, 29. "They lost just about everything." A short time earlier, Donnie Telg, 44, drove down a nearby farm road, bringing doughnuts to whatever homeowners might still be picking up the pieces. Along the road, a mobile home lay in a disheveled heap of splintered wood, broken plates, and mud-covered appliances. "There was once a nice house there on the hill." Telg said, pointing to a small hill littered in debris. "Now, it's all blown through the trees." His own house, about a mile away, suffered little damage, he said.

"Both children got blown out the window," he said. "It's probably better that they did." The parents escaped injury, but Davonna Stanley, 12, and Dusty Stanley, 16, were reported in stable condition Sunday night with multiple lacerations at Burleson County Hospital in Caldwell, according to hospital spokeswoman Beverly Mahl-mann. One other person was reported in the hospital, also in stable condition, Ms. Mahlmann said. Seven other people were treated and released.

A crumpled metal heap was all that remained of his daughter's mobile home, Kellebrew said. "We are going to stay out tonight and keep someone from vandalizing it," said G.B. Kelle-brew 68, as he sat tending a bonfire of broken tree limbs where his daughter's mobile home once stood. Flickers of lightning lit up the night sky as an occasional rain fell.
