Carolina lost two early season battles to could get started, although the Ben 000 fans will pay upwards of for the privilege of watching this annual gridiron engagement. From Southern Cal, which will sail on into the Rose Bowl if it gains a win or even a tie, came the customarily doleful tones of Coach Jeff Cravath: "As far as I'm concerned, it's an even game. We'll have to be at our very best to win." And from Coach Bert Labruch-erie. whose Bruins by winning can send the Pacific Coast conference title race into a deadlock and a vote by the 10 members to name the league's Rose Bowl representative, issued the comparatively optimistic statement: "Mentally and physically we are ready.

If we can get our share of the breaks, we can win and that's what we are going out-there to do." With one notable exception, that's what Labrucherie's gang of much the same personnel did to the Trojans last year in winning a mud battle, 12-6. LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21. CP) This sprawling metropolis was gone heserk on the subject' of tomorrow's football game between Southern California and TJ.OL.A. with its Rose Bowl implications, and the quietest spots in town tonight, odly enough, are the respective hide-away camps of the two teams.

People are not only willing, but begging, to pay outrageous prices for seats $50 for a $10 pair between the 35-yard lines, $20 to $30 behind the goal posts. Everyone from Betty Grable to Joe the Schmoe, who sells papers at Fifth and Broadway, are eager to recite the might of their favorite team (Betty likes the Trojans, Joe the Bruins), and even Mayor Fletcher Bowron discarded political acumen and picked VS.C. by seven points which is what the smart money boys are offering, and no more. So, unless the unanticipated day oi liquid sunshine develops, as happened last year to cut the sellout crowd to 98,000, more than As Wake Forest Routs Visitors Before 10,000 Fans WINSTON-SALEM, Nov. 21.

Bouncing Bill Gregus, a 18J-pound freshman back from Toledo, Ohio, offered a scientillating performance here tonight as Wake Forest routed Duquesne university 33-0, before more than 10,000 chilled fans in Bowman Gray Memorial stadium. Bill showed his offensive wares within the first three minutes and 16 seconds of play by pacing a 59-yard scoring drive which he climaxed with a four-yard plunge over right guard for a score. Hardly had the Wake Forest Partisans regained their seats, when Wake Forest stormed back after a fumble to set off an offensive spark for the Baptist machine. Center Harry Clark recovered Al Tutsie's fumble on the Duquesne's 23-yard line, and three plays later Harry Dowda turned his own left end for 20 Texas and Wake Forest. The Blue Devils have gone through three straight games without a victory after reaching mid- season undefeated and once tied.

Lippen eleven chalked up three first downs to Biltmore's none, but later, aided by a break at the start of the second quarter by way of a recovered fumble on the Biltmore 35, Ben Lippen's flashy Miner whipped a pass to Williams on the six, and (Capt.) McDowell took it over on the next play. Miner passed to Duke has beaten N. C. State, Tennessee, Maryland, and Wake Forest, lost to Georgia Tech, Missouri, and tied Navy and South Carolina. The strong Hiwassee junior college gridiron combination will meet the equally pugnacious Bulldogs from Asheville-Biltmore college here tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock in the final game for the Ashevilllans.

The Asheville eleven arrived here early this afternoon and worked out lightly in preparation for the game. The Hiwassee combination also loosened up and both are reportedly at top strength for the contest. Hiwassee is undefeated in junior college competition this season and has dropped only a single game to Maryville, a four-year school. The Bulldogs, Western division champions in the North Carolina junior college conference, are undefeated in North Carolina play but have dropped a pair of decisions to Georgia teams. The teams have two common foes Brevard and Mars Hill Junior colleges.

Hiwassee rolled over Mars win, 26-7, and defeated the other Western North Carolina team, 20-0. Asheville-Biltmore was hard pressed to win over both, beating Mars Hill, 12-0, and taking a 12-6 edge over Brevard, thus establishing themselves as underdog in this contest. ius wyara jaunt ior Ben uppen isecond score. As Maroon Devils Go Down 19 To 6 BURLINGTON Nov. 21.

The Burlington high Bulldogs defeated the Lee H. Edwards high school Maroon Devils of Asheville by the count 'of 19 to 6 in a hard fought conference battle here last night before a crowd of some 2,500 fans. The game was played on a field left wet and eoggy from a rain the night before and both teams had a hard time keeping their footing. Bulldogs Start Early Burlington rolled up their first score in the first quarter when they received the kickoff and drove 56 yards on power plays with Stutts going over from the one foot line. Keziah converted the extra point.

The teams battled on even terms throughout the remainder of the first quarter, and Burlington was on the Asheville 24 at the end of the period. On the first play of the second period Burlington moved the ball to the Asheville 21 and on the next play Barger skirted right end to score standing up. The extra point was wide. The Bulldogs scored again in the same period just three plays after scoring their second marker. Bill Small intercepted an Asheville pass on their 20 and moved it to the 11.

Stutts lost 2 yards on the next play, and on second down Keziah scored on an end-around play. The extra point was again wide. Asheville moved to the Burlington 48 yard line during the first half, and was completely outplayed. Go To The Air Asheville went to the air in the second half and completed 9 out of 18 tosses. In the last quarter they advanced the ball to the Burlington 19 on passes and Leeson skirted his own right end to score the only marker for the visitors.

Extra point was wide. Clyde Leeson was the outstanding man on the Asheville team, doing most of the passing and booting for an average of 41 yards, one of his punts riding 65 yards. Burlington rolled up 9 first downs to 5 for Asheville, and gained 197 yards rushing as against only 19 for Asheville. Burlington attempted 6 passes and made good on one for 7 yards. Asheville fired 30 aerial bombs and connected with 13 of them for 85 yards.

The Lineups: Conference Titles At Stake As Teams Ring Down Curtain NEW YORK, Nov. 21. Four major conference titles can be decided tomorrow as the college football teams stage their last full Saturday piogram of the season with Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist and Penn State still aiming at all-winning records. a Duke team entered a Carolina contest so weakened by injuries. Regular backfield men Buddy Mulligan and Paul Stephanz will be missing from the Duke line-up along with tackle Al Derogatis and centers Fletcher Wall and Carl Perkinson.

Triple threat tailback Fred Folger and regular tackle Louis Allen have been listed among the Blue Devil starters, but neither will be in top condition. With injuries dealing a body "blow to Duke's offense, the Blue Devils' main hopes for a major upset will rest in their ability to stave off the Tar Heel attack. The burden will rest on a crippled line where guards Bill Davis, Tom Chambers, and Tert made good the first of his three points after touchdown. Gregus came back into the scoring spotlight early in the second quarter after a fourth down punt by John Duchess was blocked and recovered by Ed Hoey on the Pittsburgh eleven's 49-yard line. That Gregus fellow flipped a 28-yard pass to Dowda who was knocked out of bounds on the 21-yard line, and then Dowda, on a reverse, made it a first down on the seven.

Gregus slipped off right end for a score. Only five minutes and 20 second of play had elapsed. The next Wake Forest score came with the same characteristic lightning speed after only one minute and ten seconds of the third. Freshman Back Mike Sprock took in a pass from Joe Gottlieb on the Duquesne 36-yard line, and raced down the left side line to the three where he was bounced outside. James Late in the second quarter, taking a hand off, Pennington again weaved over for a tally from the 15 for the last tally of the game.

Biltmore came back strong in the second half and penetrated down to Ben Lippen's five-yard marker an two occasions, only to fumble once, and lose the ball on downs on the other. Haynes, J. Brown, and O'Kenney were standouts for the losers, wth Haynes a constant threat with his passing, while J. Brown was a stone wall on the defense. McDowell, Rucker, and Hathaway, of the Ben Lippen aggregation starred on defense in a game that was rough oddly enough, clean from the stand point of penalties.

The opening whistle of this contest between two of the leading prep schools in Western North Carolina will touch off the spark to another battle in their gridiron fued that has been flaming for the past 21 years. It will be Homecoming day for the Christ Schoolers and old grads and students alike are hopeful that the game will bring in enough receipts to make the Christ School Memorial gymnasium a reality. All proceeds of the game will go into this fund. Squads Are Ready Coaches Dick Fayssoux and Hop Arbogast of the Greenies and Blues, respectively, have pronounced their squads ready to do battle. Both have only fair records thus far this season, but past records have been given to the statisticians for this one.

Over the years, Asheville School has won 10 games from their bitter rivals, while Christ School has come out with four victories while one game ended in a tie. Two of the games were won by the Blues by a single point. The schools, after opening the series in 1926, took a. six-year rest, thereby the 15 games.
