PAT CARTER, The Associated Press Usher, who was nominated for two MTV Video awards, announces some of his fellow nominees Tuesday in Miami. MTV Video Music Awards nominees By Adrian Sainz The Associated Press MIAMI The MTV Video Music Awards are all about scene-stealing stunts, so it was fitting Tuesday when the network announced that stars will approach this year's red carpet on luxury yachts and the entire show will be host-. free. Oh yeah Jay-Z's jarring video for "99 Problems," which depicts his own murder as a metaphor for his retirement from rapping, had a leading six nominations. Be-yonce, No Doubt, and OutKast had five nominations each.

Hip-hop stars Missy Elliott and Usher braved the heat and humidity to announce nominations at the luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel. The awards will be handed out Aug. 29 at the bayfront AmericanAir-lines Arena. Beyonce was up for her dance hit "Naughty Girl" and "Me, Myself and No Doubt was picked for Gwen Stefani's angry acting in "It's My Life" and OutKast for its Ed Sullivan Show-on-acid video of "HeyYa." Performers will include Usher, Jessica Simpson, newcomer Kanye West and a rock threesome of Jet, Hoobastank and Yellowcard. "I've got a few ideas up my sleeve," Usher said of his performance.

"Miami will be the light of life that night." Organizers touted the fact that many of music's biggest stars will be pulling up to the arena in luxury yachts as part of their red-carpet entrance. Dave Siruinick, one of the show's executive producers, said the idea to go host-less was created when they decided to hold the show in a large arena for the first time. Past shows were in cozier theater-like venues such as Radio City Music Hall in New York. By Mike Hughes Gannett News Service TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE: "Amlsh in the City" debut, 8-10 p.m., UPN. For all of its slick contrivances, this reality show has a decent, human core.

Most Amish communities really do allow young adults to sample the outside world before committing to their faith. This show simply magnifies that: Five young Amish adults share a spectacular Los Angeles mansion with six party-hardy non-Amish folks. Some of these people are only borderline interesting. Randy, who's Amish, has a chiseled torso and a blank look. Meagan, who's not, screams a lot.

Others, however, are intriguing, especially two of the Amish people. Mose is a gifted inventor with a droll sense of humor. Ruth never had a chance to go beyond the 8th grade, but she keeps a desire to learn about life. Suddenly, she's an attractive young woman in Upcoming folk, traditional and roots music and dance events in northern Vermont. TODAY Cold Country Bluegrass at 7 p.m.

After last week's terrific opener, tonight's episode is deeper, darker and even better. Last week, we met Lt. Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary), a firefighter whose marriage has crumbled. Tonight, he wants to sabotage his wife's new lover. Also, his chief (wonderfully played by Jack McGee) begins raging about a news story saying there are gay firemen.

Both situations spin wildly out of control in stories that continue next week. "Rescue Me" has it all humor, deep characters and an ability to stop us cold with moments of intense tragedy.
