Dick the Bruiser Invades Karras' Bar; Starts Fight Albion Wins 3-Way Meet at Springfield to discuss Rozelle's decision last Wednesday. In his first public statement, Wilson promised the punished players his fullest support. as coacn waut to assure them that we support them 100 per cent both on and off the field and hope that this unfortu nate situation will soon be for gotten in the light of the many valued contributions made by these players in the past Wil son said in a mimeographed statement rneir goal, as is xurs, is directed toward the 1963 season and trying to bring championship to Afflis said he believed the cut below his eye was inflicted by pool cue wielded by a patron. Afflis, who played guard for the Green Bay Packers during the 1951-54 seasons, indicated he was miffed at Karras for re portedly calling him a third-rate football player. Karras denied he had ever disparaged the Bruisers football prowess.

Afflis denied that the inci dent might have been intended to stimulate interest in the upcoming wrestling match. "Let anyone who says this is a publicity stunt get all beat up like this and be taken by the police to the hospital, Afflis said. "Then let's see them call it a publicity stunt." As to the upcoming bout, Afflis said, "if I'm out of jail, I'll murder the bum." Police Commissioner George Edwards said the incident would not change his recommendation that Karras be allowed to become a partner in the Lindell Bar. "I don't see why any advertising of this sort should affect my recommendation," the commissioner said. "I hope they have a good crowd for their fight." HOLLYWOOD, Calif.

LOUIS (UPD Ben Kerner, owner of the St. Louis Hawks, took a swipe at the National Basketball Association (NBA) territorial draft rule, saying "This is the worst rule we have in effect and we should do everything possible to abolish it." Kerner Monday night referred to the rule allowing a team to select a player on the first round draft who has attended a college or university within a 50-mile radius of the team's city with no other club having a crack at him. Kerner said the rule was put in the books 17 years ago when the league was formed with the purpose of boosting attendance in the cities where a specific player "had built a reputation." Strong Get Stronger The Hawk boss said "This out-j dated rule defeats that purpose! and it has allowed those clubs with collegiate cage powers in their territory to get stronger Cincy self today after his Braves bounce back from a "lost weekend" in New York by blasting their way to a 10-2 victory over Don Drys dale and the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night. "I guess our guys were just glad to leave that chamber of horrors in the Polo Grounds, said Bragan in explaining the manner his Braves recovered from four straight losses to the Mets. Drysdale lasted only five in nings as the suddenly aroused Milwaukee sluggers ripped the big right-hander for six runs and eight of their 13 hits at Los Angeles, Eddie Mathews clouted a three- run homer and Hank Aaron and Denis Menke chipped in with solo blasts to back up lefty Bob Hend-ley's six-hit pitching.

Drop Out of First The Cincinnati Reds knocked San Francisco out of first place by scoring a comeback 7-4 victory over the Giants on two-run hom ers by Jerry Lynch and Frank Robinson in the eighth inning. Jack Sanford was cruising along with a 3-1 lead when the Reds struck and handed the Giant right hander his first defeat after three without giving the weaker teams a chance to get better. Kerner pointed out the rule failed to help attendance in the two cities that used it the most in previous years. "Minneapolis had three territo rial selections Whitey Skoog Dick Garmaker, and Vera Mik- kelson and was forced to move to Los Angeles as attendance dipped," Kerner stated. He pointed to Philadelphia's move to San Francisco despite the fact that four of their tern torial choices Paul Arizin, Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Gola and Guy Rodgers were top-rated All- Americans in college.

Were in a situation now where three teams Boston, Cin cinnati and New York have a preponderance of college basket ball powerhouses their imme diate area and could get immeas ureably stronger without going through the true nature and intent of our draft," he said. The Detroit pro compiled a four game 927 to eliminate Bud Hodg son of Los Angeles, who turned in 795. Hodgson was Billy G's third consecutive victory after los ing his first finals match Sunday to Jim Stefamch of Johet, 111. Two Ex-Champs Ousted Two former master's champions Tom Hennessey and Ray Bluth, both of St. Louis, were eliminated from the tournament Monday.

Hennessey fell to Larry Oakar of Cleveland, Ohio, 889 to 861, and Bluth was downed by Jerry Back of Buffalo, 826 to 777. Don Carter of St. Louis walked off with his third straight victory in the winners' bracket by defeating Bus Oswalt of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Carter shot 898 to Oswalt's 755.

Oswalt is the regular doubles and all events leader in the ABC tournament, conducted in conjunction with the masters. Only 24 of 64 original finalists remain in the double elimination tournament Only eight of the 24 are undefeated, including Carter, Billy Welu and Dick Hoover, all of St. Louis. There were no changes in the general tournament. Midway Team Wins at Plainwell The Midway Roller Rink's hockey team won the six-team invitational hockey tournament at Plainwell over the weekend.

DETROIT (AP) Wrestler Richard (Dick the Bruiser) Af- flis was held for investigation of aggravated assault following a barroom brawl early today involving Alex Karras, suspended Detroit Lions pro football star. Police said the incident at the Lindell bar involved the Bruiser, Karras, James Butsi- cans and five bar patrons. But- sicans is Karras associate in the tavern business. Take 5 Stitches Karras has a wrestling ex hibition scheduled with the Bruiser Saturday night at Cobo Hall Arena.

He was suspended indefinitely by the National Football League last week for betting on the league's games. Afflis, 34, was taken to a hos pital where five stitches were used to close a cut under his left eye. He also was treated for facial bruises. The aggravated assault com plaint was made by Butsicaris. Police gave this account of the brawl: Afflis entered the bar, which is frequented by sports figures, about 1 a.m.

and spoke abusive ly to Butsicaris and Karras. When Butsicaris refused to serve Afflis and warned him to temper his remarks, the Bruiser grabbed Butsicaris by the shirt front and swung at him. Patrons jumped into the melee and Butsicaris broke loose and called police. ii osiin I SILVERT0WN TIRE eM 60 WAYS TO KEEP CHILDREN HAPPY IN THE GAR! Karras was suspended along with Green Bay's Paul Hornung for at least one season in the same Rozelle edict "We know that we will miss the play of Karras for the '63 season but are sincerely hopeful that the commissioner will see fit to reinstate him for the '64 campaign," Wilson said.

Edwards said his department approved Karras application to buy one-third of a liquor license. The application was forwarded to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for what is. considered automatic approval. Figure in Plans Movement to newer and larger quarters of the Lindell AC, in which the brothers James and John Butsicaris are Karras' partners, had been awaiting approval of the football star's liquor license application. Edwards said Karras has nearly $45,000 invested in the hangout for fans and athletes.

"I think it is a wonderful thing and I want to thank the wonderful people who did it for me," Karras said of the ap proval. Wilson said he met several times with the player punished by Rozelle. He said the five players Rozelle fined were high in the Lions' plans for the 1963 season. "The recent events in no way diminish the high regard in which the Lions hold these players, personally and as athletes," Wilson said. "The play ers realize they made a mis take in placing a group bet on the recent Packers-Giants championship game and are willing to accept the penalties as ordered by the commissioner's office.

"Despite the commissioner's report that indicated there was absolutely no criminal action involved in the entire NFL affair, the players and their fami lies have suffered considerable mental anguish in recent days."
