Young Henry Ford Proves His Ability Since Taking Helm (Associated Press Automotive Editor) DETROIT (Pi Five years ago next week one era ended and another began in the saga of the Ford Motor Co. On Sept. 21, 1945, the elder Henry Ford, the company's founder, resigned as president, and his grandson, Henry Ford II, was named to succeed him.

So ended the period in which the Ford Motor Co. was largely a one-man institution, directed and dominated by the slender, stoop-shoulder old man who started it 42 years earlier with $28,000 reluctantly advanced by acquaintances, and who reputedly refused a billion dollars for it when it was scarcely 20 years old. (U.PJ What with all the new automobiles coming out without running boards, a policeman has no place to prop up one foot while he writes out a ticket.

Police authorities here have taken measures to remedy things. They are coming out with a "cramp-proof" summons form that will make up for the lack of running boards. Most of the writing the officer will have to do on this form will be done near the top of the form. Previous forms required close and painstaking writing on blanks near the bottom. "The arresting officer now will have most of the form on which to rest his hand," a police spokesman said.

If her son were not namec' president in fact as well as in name. Recommends Grandson Whether the story is true or not, the elder Ford sent a letter to' the company's board directors reading in part: "I hereby resign the office of president of this company, to take effect uprn acceptance. As you know, I have many personal interests to which I now desire to devote most of my time.

"May I recommend to the board that it consider the appointment of my grandson, Henry Ford as my successor." The younger Ford immediately was named president. He had been executive vice president for about a year and a half prior to that time. Nobody who has watched the Ford Motor course under Henry Ford II has any doubt it still is far from it- peak. One of young Ford's first moves after taking over the company presidency was immediately to reorganize it on the soundest possible foundation. He initiated an expan Wide World.

Even in these push button days, the age of the mechanical mind, no one has been able to fathom the secrets of the Atlantic off the southeastern coast of the U. 8. where in the past five years alone ships of sea and air have vanished without trace. A radio message at 4 a. m. Dec. 27, 1948, reported them SO miles south of their goal. They never arrived.

Searchers scanned 310.000 miles of sea and land, but the limbo into which they flew was on no map. On Jan. 18. 1949. a great task force of the United States navy was on maneuvers south of Bermuda.

That same day a British airliner, the Ariel, vanished in the thin air which the Ford Motor Co. returned to the business exclusively of manufacturing motor vehicles. Disposed of quickly were numerous pet initiated by the elder Ford but unrelated to the automobile business. Reorganized, too, was the executive and administrative personnel df the far-reaching industrial empire. Instead of the one-man head, whose wish or whim was law to his lieutenants, there came into the company a dozen or more vice-presidents, each a specialist in his field finance, personnel, manufacturing, sales, engineering.

Many came from long-time competitors of Ford. Ford Agile at 82 At the time the elder Henry Ford resigned as president ho was 82 years old, but still agile and alert. Eighteen months later he died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Before he turned the presidency over to his grandson there were some who said the Ford Motor Co. had reached and passed its peak.

However that may be, at the end of 1945 the company reported assets of $815,515,214. In its most recent financial report for 1949 It listed assets of $1,343,349,000. the highest in its history and the third consecutive year in which its worth exceeded a billion dollars. And in production the company still has a chance this year of equaling the best previous year in its history. It already has built about 400,000 vehicles this year.

To match his grandfather's best production effort the younger Henry Ford must build 2.090,338 vehicles in single year. The elder Ford did it in 1923. One of the major ambitions of Henry Ford II is to have his Ford division regain from Chevrolet the top position In car and truck production and sales. Chevrolet took over the top place 15 years ago. Opinion among industry analysts is about evenly divided on whether Ford can oust Chevrolet.

Ford says he will do it. The industry chroniclers are agreed he will make a tremendous effort to do so. Retirement Story Told An interesting story told although never confirmed about events that preceded the elder Ford's final retirement in 1945. The company had been family-owned since 1919 when Ford bought the holdings of all the original stockholders after threatening to withdraw and organize another company it they refused to surrender their stock. One of the founder's most cherished desires was that the Ford Motor Co.

always should remain wholly owned by the Ford family. As the story goes, the elder Ford's retirement in 1945 was preceded by a family council In which some plain words were spoken. To Mrs. Eleanor Clay Ford, widow of the late Edsel B. Ford and mother of The craft radioed its position several times.

Then silence enveloped it, and mystery. To this day no trace has been uncovered. An older but more perplexing mystery is that of the five torpedo planes. They took off from the navy's Fort Lauderdale air station on Dec. 5, 1945, for a navigational training flight The hours passed and darkness fell.

Anxious officers called to them by radio and were answered only with silence. The hour passed when their fuel would be exhausted and search planes were sent out. Among the searachers was a big. lumbering rescue craft, a PBM with 13 men on MIAMI, Fla. Pi It's a small world? No, its still the same vast globe the ancients knew, with the same misty limbo of the lost.

We think it is small because of speeding wheels and wings and the voice, of radio which comes out of the void. A mils is only a minute's travel by wheel or a few seconds' flipht-but it is still a mile. The miles add up to a vast unknown into which a hundred and more persons have flown or sailed within brief memory, to be swallowed up Just as ships were swallowed in the old sailing days. The Sandra carried radio. It was a 350-foot freighter which sailed with 12 men on board from Miami to Savannah.

There 300 tons of Insecticide were loaded for Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. The Sandra sailed and disappeared without a trace. On June 16, in the "small world" year of 1950, search was abandoned. The fate of the craft and the dozen on board was written down as an official mystery. through which it flew.

The ambitions and hopes have to do with better relationships between employe and employer. And he believes there is frequent misunder- standing on both sides. Like his famous grandfather, young Ford frequently' has emphasized the viewpoint that any advance in living standards will come from increased production and increased production efficiency. He "If we in this country would give to human relationships the hard-headed, objective consideration which we have given to engineering problems, we might do as much to raise the standard of living in this country during the next 10 to 25 years as we were able to accomplish during the past 25 years through developments in the field of machine technology." I on board on its way from London to Chile. The naval force abandoned its maneuvers.

Aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers combed the waters with thousands of pairs of sharp eyes on watch. They learned no hint of the Ariel's fate. A year earlier, on Jan. 31, 1948. another British plane, the Star Tiger, approached Bermuda with 29 on board.

board. None 'of the five torpedo planes with the 14 crewmen were found despite the greatest search In Florida's history. Nor did the PBM rescue craft ever return. These and other modern mysteries have established a roll of about 135 persons who went forth confidently into a world they thought small."
