Detroit's third defeat in five National Football League games Sunday 17-14 by the lowly Dal las Cowboys left a mountain ous job ahead for the Lions if they are to win redemption. Quarterbacking was the ap parent No. 1 trouble again for Detroit, though there were other problems.

Vital pass interceptions by the Cowboys off Milt Plum played major role while the Lions were taking over in the statistics but in little else. Two Passes Intercepted Dallas linebacker Chuck How- ley, intercepting two passes to set up a touchdown and a field eoal. was the' main villain in the piece. The Lions, now a full three games off the NFL Western Di vision pace, made a fight of it in the fourth quarter when Earl Morrall pitched a total of more than 100 yards tor two touchdowns when it was too late. Earl Walker missed four field goals for Detroit, all from long distance ranging from 37 to 49 yards.

The Cowboys, winning their first in five league games before a Cotton Bowl crowd of 27,264, got a second period touchdown, never to yield their lead. Fifth West Defeat This was the fifth straight time that a team from the NFL's supposedly weaker East-em Division had conquered over a West foe. Going into the late portion of the last period, Detroit trailed 10- 0 and got going with a rally that might have turned the tide. Pass stealer Howley had figured in both Dallas' second period touchdown and in its last quarter field goal. He stole a Plum pass on the Detroit 36 in the second quarter and Don Meredith passed the Cowboys in from there, completing the drive with an 11- yarder to Frank Clarke.

Howley stole another Plum pass on the Detroit 11 in the fourth quarter when Detroit was trying to get out of a hole and Sam Baker booted a field goal, from the M. Morrall Sparks Rally Coach George Wilson yanked Plum and Morrall came in- and set off the rally. Before he had finished, Morrall threw two touchdown passes to Earl Cod-gill, but between the two Amos Marsh got loose for a 41-yard touchdown dash for Dallas in keeping the game safe for the Cowboys. Jimmy Brown received that tribute from defender Sam Huff after staying on his record- breaking course Sunday by rambling over, around and through the New York Giants for three touchdowns a 3a-24 Cleveland victory that kept the Browns undefeated in the National Football League. A one-fnan Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Brown dove one yard for the first Browns' touchdown, took a screen pass 72 yards for the touchdown that put Cleve land ahead to stay and wound up his performance with a 32 yard scoring run. The former Syracuse All America and NFL rushing rec ord-holder gained 123 in 23 car ries on the ground and grabbed four passes for an additional 86 yards.

With only five games on the 14-game NFL schedule com pleted, Brown is threatening his own one-season ground-gaining record of 1,527 yards, set in 19d8; Joe Perry's career record of 8 280 yards gained, in 14 seasons; and Jim Taylor one-season touchdown record of 19, set last year. Brown, in his seventh season, has gained 787 yards this season an amazing 7.8 average 8,230 career yards and has scored 10 touchdowns this year. The Browns' victory maintained their one-game hold on ithe Eastern Conference lead. St. Louis slipped into second with a 24-23 decision over Pittsburgh on Charlie Johnson's 28-yard pass to Bobby Joe Conrad with five seconds remaining and Jim Bakken's conversion.

The Chicago Bears remained the NFL's only other unbeaten crushing the Los Angeles Rams 52-14 as Mike Ditka grabbed four touchdown passes. Green Bay defending league champion Packers remained one game back in the Western con ference race witn a ii-ix, decision over Minnesota. Sonny Jurgensen's four touch down passes earned Philadel phia to a 37-24 triumph over Washington, Dallas whipped De troit 17-14 for its first victory and Baltimore defeated San Francisco 20-3. Sinclwi Bros. 1 NEW YORK (AP) What is the difference between the fantastic Jimmy Brown of 1963 and the sub-par Jim Brown of 1962? "I'm the same guy," Brown said Sunday after Cleveland's 35-24 victory over the New York Giants.

"The team is different, especially in attitude. It's the change of policy. Now all of us have the respect for each other. Team Closer Now "You don't just do your job and then sit down and wait for the movies and say well I did a I was supposed to Now you make suggestions, you participate. It is more like a family." Jimmy didn't mention Paul Brown, his old coach, by name.

He did point out that Blanton Collier, his new coach, gave him new freedom of decision. "I like to run outside and I like to run inside," he said. "And I like the two-way option. I never had that before. Now I'm not just a fullback who just hits up the middle." Batters Giants Brown ripped the nroud Giants' defense to shreds Sunday afternoon, gaining 123 yards on 23 carries and 86 more on four pass catches for a total of 209.

Because the league statisticians call a screen pass a passing play and not a run, Brown must wait another week to top the National Football League's all-time rushing record. He has 8,246. Actually Jimmy should have 72 more yards running for he took Frank Ryan's screen pass behind the line of scrimmage and went all the way for a touchdown.

Ryan's pass was only an incidental factor in this case, permitting him to get wide where a block by Dick Schaf-rath helped him break loose. Allie Sherman, the Giants' coach, didn't find any great change in Brown. "He always has been great," said Sherman. "He is a hell of a back and now he's at his strongest and quickest. They utilize him well." They sure do.
