14. An all-night bank modeled on those which have been so successful in the United States is to be established here in a short time. A company has already been registered and the scheme has met with strong encouragement from business men. The new institution will be especially welcomed by houses of entertainment of all sorts, which at the present time are compelled to keep their nightly takings under strong guard until the banks open the next day. The eighteen hours during which it is impossible in London to either deposit or withdraw money often form a very awkward period for people who either have too much or too little money for their comfort until the next day.

-f An Engaging Weakness. With the death of General Booth many stories of the great religious leader are being told. Among his most engaging weakness was his pride in the D. C. L.

degree conferred on him by the University of Oxford. When It was conferred there was a complete absence of the graduate horseplay and ragging which usually distinguish such a gathering. This was very striking, especially in view of the well, known objection of many prominent mera- bera of convocation to the offer of the degree. When General Booth left the uni i versity after the ceremony he insisted on wearing his academic robes in the To Have Noted Quarters. The wtr for the control of the oil market la the Scandinavian countries has resulted in practically a complete vie tory for the Standard Oil company. The only concession obtained by the Scandinavian asoclatlon from the big American company was that the price of oil In Scandinavian territory should not exceed the price asked la any other European country.

The Standard Oil company obtain ed an entrance Into the conntry by an agreement with existing Interests to take over the distribution system for oil In Scandinavia. There was much opposition to the scheme by the Small Dealers' association, which passed a solution in favor of government Intervention to prevent the establishment of a Standard OH monopoly In the Swedish market. The Austrian minister made every effort to secure the admission to Sweden of Austrian oil. which has been kept out by the Swedish safety regulations, as It does not meet the requirements for safe transport, being too light. Eleriment With Army.

An experiment In mobilizing the Swedish army is about to be made on a large scale by the government In order to see how the new system Introduced In 1301 will work in time of war. The recent reports of the forward movement of Russian troops toward the frontier lends much Interest to the tests. No one has any Idea which section of the country will be mobilized, and the public Is becoming very Impatient for in the mobilization district it means that practically evsry man over 21 and under 40 years of age will be called upon to bear arms during the maneuvers. 1000. "Every man who knows the people of the Southern states see In the results of this work new epoch In their history and. because of its sanitary suggestiveness, a new epoch in our national history. The Southern white people are of almost pure English stock. It has been hard to explain their backwardness, for they are descended from capable ancestors and inhabit a rich land.

"Now, for the first time, the main cause cf their long backwardness is explained and it is a removable cause. The hookworm has probably played a larger part in our Southern history than slavery or wars or any political dogma or economic creed. It has. in fact, had a strong influence (nobody can say how strong) in shaping political dogmas and economic creeds. If there had been no hookworm victims in our Southern states it is certain that our national history would In some way, perhaps In many ways, have been very different." Tbat the hookworm often referred to the "laziness germ" was the man contributing iactor In the decay of many ancient civilizations and today responsible for the backwardness of the people of China. Central America, India, parts of South America and the West Indies, is the startling statement, backed up by the strongest medical authority, made by Walter H. Page, editor cf the World's Work, in the September number of that magazine. Mr. Page is a member of the Hookworm Commission, and in the first of a series or articles telling how John D.

Rockefeller's money is being used to benefit humanity, he says: "This, debilitating disease has played an incalculable part in the history of all warm countries. The present condition of China, of India, and of Central America, and. of parts of South America, and of the West Indies is in great measure ac counted for by its ravages, in some of these countries for many centuries. Many Countries Affected. "Practically every country between 3G degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south is infected, and infection is found in the mines of countries north of the 36 degrees parallel, such as Wales, Germany, the Netherlands Belguim.

and iFrance Tile countries that have infection, including the surface United States, contain a population of about 940 milions. The estimated population of the globe is 1,600 millions. A good deal more than half, therefore, live in the area of hookworm infection. "This parasite has been preying on man uerhaps for thousands of years. A' papyrus written 3460 years ago contains a description of a disease in Egypt which many physicians declare i the hookworm dis-ease; It describes-it-too accurately to be anything else.

In recent times it was observed in Egypt first in 1833, but the first recorded treatment was made in 1887. "The degree of Infection differs. In Porto" Rico it was estimated at the time the American occupation' at fully 90 per cent of the population. They were almost wholly an anemic people, physically and economically well-nigh worthless." An Chanter. How Dr.

Charles W. Stiles of the United Staiet pi blic health anc marine hospital service discovered the hookworm infection and connectea it with the anaemic condition and general laz'UL-ss of the southern "ooor whites." less than four years aeo: how the discovery was follow ed by that of a simple and easy cure a dose of Epsom salts, a smaii dose of thymol, then another dose of salts, repeated few times ana how, when ihe subject was brought to the attention of Mr. Rockefeller he agreed to spnd $1,000,000 if so much should be necessary, to finance a commission for the eradication of the disease, makes one of the most interesting chapters in the history of modern medical progress. "The hookworm," says Mr. Page, "is ah intestinal parasite a worm about one-third of an inch long when it is grown.

When of microscopic size, it enters the body most often through the skin, generally through the skin of the feet because the feet come In contact with It In polluted soil. The female worms in the body give forth an incredible number of eggs, which hatch when deposited on the soil, and while yet invisible to the eye enter the feet. Thence they make a long journey through the body till they reach the small intestines, to which they cling and give forth a poison, which "produces the disease, and lay more eggs and thus repeat the endless round of their parasitical As many as 4500 worms have been expelled from" a single person; they have been known to live in a person for ten years; and they are so prolific that a large part of the Inhabited soil of the earth between 36 degrees Candidates Cards Paid Advertisements. "Much interest is being manifested in the coming engagement of the Great Raymond, the world-famed American magician, who is just completing his third round the world tour and returning to America via Honolulu and San Francisco. Columns and columns of the most flattering press comments from all countries and in all languages attest to this entertainer's wonderful success both at home and abroad. Many of the press criticisms of his performances declare him to be the greatest magician the world has ever seen. It Is said that his stage settings and equipment surpass anything of the north latitude and 30 degrees south is polluted with them. The pollution occurs, of course, because of the insanitary disposition of human excrement." Commission's Work Described.

Describing in detail the work of the sanitary commission, he savs: "First." through state and other local boards of health wherever possible, a sanitary survey of the several southern states was made and the degree of infection published. Almost eery Mart of the south is infected; aud there are communities in which three-fourths of the people have the disease. Then every state was divided into sanitary districts. In every district a local physician has charge of the work, all under the direction of a state director, who in most cases is a member of the state board of health. "The physicia is give free treatment to all who need it after the microscopists have made examinations; then they go on to the next place, and the next week repeat the circuit.

A great mas of literature on the subject is thus distributed." One community in Virginia was found where every Individual was afflicted with the disease. So marked were the characteristic symptoms that they were regarded by neighboring communities as beings of a separate Treatment by the physicians of the hookworm commission completely regenerated the community in a few months, and similar miraculous results are reported from the entire south. At first skeptical of the existence of the disease and resentful of the efforts of "northerners" to help eradicate it, now public, press and pulpit are united in tne work of stamping out the pest and creating sanitary conditions that will prevent tt recurrence results which are now only a matter of time. according to the commission's report, 140,378 persons have been treated by its physicians, at an average expenditure of $1.27 per capita; 5225 physicians have been enlisted In the war and 53,167 persons have received treatment by 4126 of these local doctors; more than forty thousand teachers have been interested and 451,877 persois Lave attended the 3620 public lectures on the subject, while 908,436 bulletins on sanitation have been sent out. The disease has been found in 719 of the 884 counties in ten states.

Eighty-five counties in nine of these states have made approbations for local hookworm dispensaries. Stories of Marvelous Cures. Stories of cures that are nothing short of marvelous- are told. One 16-year-old boy who weighed only fifty pounds became perfectly normal after a few treatments. Infected children in a school at Varnado, who ranked fifth and sixth in their classes were cured and then ranked second5 and third.

In a girls' school In Mississippi the grade fifty-six girls who were infected showed an average of 77. out of a possible 100; the grade of fifty-six girls, who were not Infected, chosen at random was 89.
