Congressman Urges Refraining Of Fighting Pilots To Insure Nation's Air Future 50 "A boy who's flown 25 or Job eivil aviation, earning mail and passengers, flying freight and teaching others to fly. The nation owes those who want to continue in aviation a chance. But they will need to be adjusted to the radio missions over Europe isn't going to like it worth a darn if he comes home after the war and is told he'll have to get a civilian license I before he can go out to the air-i port and take his girl for a ride," declared one veteran airman who I nerve-battered pilots flight surgeons and psychiatrists feel i should be given an opportunity to retain associations with flying. Most of the primary schools flABIOV-HDOU Thursday, May 18 it Pajre 5 might not work equally well for returned pilots at the schools which are situated in restful areas.

These have dancing and, entertainment facilities in addition to complete equipment for light aircraft flying and maintenance. The "human equation" of returning airmen is a definite problem to aviation men who believe the postwar period is going to be an "air era" in which time and space and distance will take a good kicking around. Each military pilot represents an investment of something over $25,000 in aerial have little touches of luxury such as is seldom found at an out-and-out army installation. This probably is because they were erected by civilian operators, each with a natural competitive urge to have practices, the traffic systems and other amenities t)f civilian flying." Sparkman said he thought the contract schools had proved them-j selves safe, efficient and inexpen-' sive and would make ideal retratn-; ing centers. i Such retraining would be design-! ed to teach the so-called "Hot Pi-j lots" of combat the scores of i things they wrould have to a 1 with in normal civilian flying.

These are largely ignored in military training because that is pointed toward a specific job fighting. Some veteran civilian flyers i have expressed fear that unless a method of remolding the com-! bat pilots into "civil airmen is un-; dertaken, postwar aviation will suffer a setback in the public eye. Military flyers unaccustomed to comparatively low-horsepower engines and multiple safety reg-! ulations are apt to get into unex-j pected difficulties and cause By ED I BRIGES Atlanta, May 16 PV A Congressional suggestion Jhat the government use a part of its vast war pilot training plant to retrain combat airmen into the amenities of civilian flying stirred postwar aviation planners today. Rep. John J.

Sparkman (D-Ala.) advanced a proposal that the contract pilot schools dotted from coast to coast in the southern United States be utilized for this purpose because of their excellent facilities for flyings and relaxation. Many of the primrry pilot schools, which are operated by civilians since 1939 have taught more than 100.000 AAF pilots the fundamentals of flying, have unusually comfortable layouts, with swimming pools, roomy dormitories, spacious dining halls and other facilities not generally found at army posts. Nearly all the property of these schools is government owned, having been purchased months ago by the defense plant corporation. Several of these places would be useful as convalescent centers for has suprervised a primary school turning out several thousand fledgling air fighters. Under Sparkman's plan, military airmen would be sent back to the training schools for coaching, given an examination and provided with civilian pilot licenses.

Many an air fighting veteran has had his nerves so battered he is apt to be soured on aviation for life. The Air Forces have already worked out a system to return such men to fighting trim, using English country estates for rest homes. At these the pilots swim, hunt, hike and have a chance to tinker with and take hops in light aircraft. Flight surgeons who have observed the results say the rest home treatments work wonders in the attitude of flyers. Some congressmen and flying training men are wondering if the formula of relaxation and flying i a "better school" than the others.

They are conducted in a similar vein of friendly rivalry within the I Aeronautical Training Society, of which all the AAF contract schools are members. Rep. Sparkman asserted in an interview that those "who have won their wings never again will be the earth-bound men they were before they took up flying. Some of them can continue in the Army Air Forces in assignments commensurate with their training education. These airman are the core of the nation's flying future.

In addition, Hsv. Ashworth Is slated to go to Washington this week to attend important meetings there relative to inauguration of the program on a possible nation basis.

Bailey, wife of the Governor, as state chairman, the reaching it's successful climax at this with a number of the larger cities reporting the names of all eligible women areas surrounding and in those cities to the various services. Under the plan, the sendees, WACS, WAVES, SPARS and Marines, will subsequently contact the young women whose names are listed as within respective age limits and eligible for service with the armed forces, and will seek to promote enlistments of such young women In one of the services.

Governor and Mrs. Bailey have watched over and assisted in the Mississippi Joint Recruitment Campaign since It's inception, both expressing the opinion that it Is necessary and proper that the young women of this state should take an active stand in the war with one of the various branches of service. If they are not already In essential war work. Of the hundreds of young wo-men whose names are being reported to the armed services, few are actually in essential war work, therefore, it is considered thst many will find it their duty to actually sign up and serve. The Italian attack is without doubt the first blow of the coming all-embracing assaults against Axis Europe. Strike First Blow For months plans have been made carefully, the necessary troops and supplies have been amassed at the proper locations, and then all of the many plans coordinated into the exact pattern of all the offensives which undoubtedly will be the most extensive and most bloody ever known to man. Gen. Sir Harold Alexander, commander of the Allied troops In Italy, made that definitelyy clear in his order of the day to his soldiers.

He said, in effect, that the Allied 5th and British 8th armies have been honored by being designated to strike the first blow of many to be directed against our enemies from the east west, from the north, and from the south which will result in the final annihilation of Hitler and his Axis ideology.
