Where the consideration is in excess of $500 the tax is at the rate of 50 cents per $500 or fraction thereof.

There Is no tax where the amount involved is less than $100. Either the purchaser or the seller may be held liable for the tax after June 21 and in addition may incur a special penalty of $100 for failure to affix the tax stamps. In determining the tax due any paper already on the property which is assumed by the purchaser is not to be taken as a part of the consideration but any new mortgage is considered a part of the purchase price. A new mortgage replacing an old mortgage is also counted as a part of the consideration. The new tax of 6 cents per gallon on finished or fountain syrups is also expected to have a widespread effect in Mississippi.

Fountain operators making their own syrups are required to register immediately with the office of the internal revenue collector. Failure to register and failure to make required returns for payment of the tax is subject to a penalty of not more than $1,000. The 6 cent tax Is placed on all finished or fountain syrups commonly used in manufacturing and mixing drinks.
