The Burlington Free Press Wednesday, March 26, 2003 Death Notices and Funerals Held RUSSELL HOPKINS ALLEN NEW HAVEN On Sunday, March 23, 2003, Russell left this earth to join his wife, Helen. He was born on Sept. 5, 1913, son of Ellen Gaines Allen and Bert J. Allen. Russell married Helen Drinkwater of Huntington, Nov.

9, 1940. He farmed in New Haven for more than 50 years. They moved to Englewood, in 1980 where he enjoyed gardening and growing fruit trees. He served the town of New Haven as tax collector, lister and constable for many years. He was also instrumental in suing the U.S.

Department of Agriculture "Federal Milk Order" regarding the "Nearby Differential" pricing of milk in New England during the late '60s. His wife, Helen, to whom he was married for over 50 years; a brother, Harold; and sister, Louise, predeceased him. He leaves three children and their spouses, Burt and Patty, Jane and George, and Nancy. Also grandchildren, Neil and Karyn Allen, Mark Allen, April and Jeremy Shortsleeve, David and Dyan Swineheart, Dale and Stephanie Swineheart and Amy and Keith Muma. Also, four great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law Donald Mosher.

Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes in charge of arrangements. CLYDE J. DEVOID WILLISTON Clyde J. Devoid 90, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness. He was born Oct.

4, 1912, in Vergennes, the son of Carter E. and Cora (Shoemaker) Devoid. Clyde worked for the town of Williston for 15 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Elvie Devoid of Williston; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased his brother, Floyd Devoid, and his sister, Cornelia Haskins. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28, at 10 a.m. in the Corbin Palmer Funeral Chapel, 9 Pleasant Essex Junction, with burial to follow in the family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.

ANITA B. FULLER COLCHESTER Our loving mother, Anita B. Fuller, 77, of Colchester, joined our father and the Lord in heaven on Monday, March 24, 2003, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston. A devoted mother who taught all of her children the true meaning of love and compas- sion. Her loving spirit and wisdom will never be forgotten by those who were touched by her tenderness.

She was born in Burlington on April 25, 1925, the daughter of the late Roy and Florence (Labor) Bezio. On Feb. 10, 1942, she was married to Arlie Fuller in Burlington. He predeceased her on Oct. 5, 1996.

Anita is survived by her three daughters, Mary and John Valiquette Colchester, Martha Sorrentino and her husband, Joseph, of Colchester, and Deborah Fuller and her partner, Karen Brasel, of St. George; her son Arlie R. Fuller Jr. and his wife, Marie, of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; three sisters, Rita Cadorette, Mildred Lavalley and Viola Francis, all of Colchester; by her brothers, Norman 'Bezio and his wife, Louise, of San Diego, and Robert Bezio and his wife, Emiline, of Brattleboro. She was predeceased by a sister, a brother, a grandson, and three brothers-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Colchester. Interment be held in the spring in Malletts Bay Cemetery. For those who wish, contributions in Anita's memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495.

NORMA IRENE LAVALLEY MILTON Norma Irene (Baxter) (Zeno) of Manley Road, Milton, passed away on Monday morning, March 24, 2003, in the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester. She was born in Milton on April 5, 1921, daughter of the late Ethan and Margie (Fitch) Baxter Sr. Norma was married to her first husband, Leo Zeno, for 22 years.

He passed away in March 1963. She was married to her second husband, Francis A. Lavalley Sr. for 22 years. He passed away in October 1994.

She was an avid gardener and loved, her vegetable garden, flowers and blueberries. Norma also loved to pick wild strawberries and made a variety of jams and jellies. Through the years, Norma enjoyed crocheting, knitting, Artex painting and quilting, making several for families and friends. Norma enjoyed being a ham and CB radio operator. She was one of the first 10 in the state of Vermont to have an FCC license.

Through the radio, she helped many truckers and travelers during hazardous road conditions. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends. She is survived by, her daughter, Dorothy (Zeno) Melton and her husband, Mitchell, of Milton; her son, Lewis Zeno and his wife, Laurel (Cary) Zeno, of Milton; two stepchildren, Francis Lavalley of Colchester, Theresa Lewis and her husband, Charles, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Fitch Baxter of Swanton and Ethan Baxter, Jr. of East Dixfield, Maine; four grandchildren, Terry Melton, Eric Melton and his wife, Shireen, of St. Albans, Kimberly (Zeno) Fuller and her husband, David, of Georgia, Holly (Zeno) McRae and her husband, Joseph, of Milton; several step-grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren, Abigail McRae, Tyler McRae, Jared Melton, Mattia Fuller; two sisters-inlaw, Connie (Baxter) Tung of Massachusetts, Lillian Baxter of Burlington; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by her sister Bernice Hibbard, in 1992; three brothers, Clinton Baxter in 2002, Earl Baxter in 1950, and Calvin Baxter in 1984. Visiting hours will be held today, Wednesday, March 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A wake service will be offered by the Rev. John Feltz at the funeral home at 3:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated by the Rev. John Feltz and the Rev. Jay Haskin on Thursday, March 27, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Church.

BURLINGTON Rita (Frenette) Lovejoy, 76, a longtime resident of Winooski, died peacefully, in the presence of her family, on Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington. She was born in Winooski on May 23, 1926, the daughter of the late Napoleon and Maria (Cote) Frenette. Rita graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy. She was married in St.

Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski on Feb. 19, 1949, to Norman Lovejoy who predeceased her on Jan. 22, 2003. She was employed for 23 years as a secretary in Employee Health and Infection Control at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Rita was a parishioner of St.

Francis Xavier Catholic Church and a past member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by five children, Sharon Lovejoy and husband Jim Peckma of Colchester, Dr. Kim B. Lovejoy and wife Mary of Indiana, Norman R.

Lovejoy Jr. and wife Candy of Winooski, Mark S. Lovejoy and wife" Susan of Essex, and Deborah L. Rouille and husband Timothy of South Burlington; seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Joseph, Maeghan, Joshua, Nicole, Melissa and Bronson; two sisters, Theresa St. Peter and Jane Menard; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister Dora Frenette Cantell on June 16, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated on Friday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.

There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Xavier Church Renovation Fund, 3 St. Peter Winooski, Vt. 05404.

Arrangements are by LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main Winooski. GERHARD H. SCHMIDT STOWE Gerhard H. Schmidt, 62, of Stowe passed away in the Fletcher Allen Health Care on Monday, March 24, 2003. Gerhard was the beloved husband of Sigrid "Gucki" Schmidt, who predeceased him on Feb.

19, 2003. He was the beloved father of Johannes H. Schmidt of Cupertino, and Matthais G. Schmidt of Boulder, Colo. He was born May 15, 1940, in Olmutz, Austria, the son of Marianna Tschochner and Johann Schmidt.

Gerhard grew up in Bad-Hofgastein, Austria, which is one of the best ski areas in Austria. At age 14 he was junior champion of Salzburg and became a member of the Junior Development Team of Austria. After attending hotel school for three years after high school he became more interested in teaching skiing. He attended Professor Kruckenhouser's state ski instructor program for two years at St. where he became an Austrian State Certified Ski Instructor.

He taught skiing in Badgstein for two winters and then two winters at Zurs Am Arlberg. In 1964 he came to Stowe and joined the Sepp Ruschp Ski School where he worked until 1969. He had the opportunity, which he described as a privilege, to teach many of Kennedy family as well as the Gimbels and Larsen families. On May 5, 1965, Gerhard married Sigrid Rauscher in Abtenau, Austria. She came to the United States with him that year.

Gerhard had also become a state certified tennis instructor in Bad Hofgastein. In the summer of 1965 Gerhard taught tennis at the Rockaway Hunting Club in Cedarhurst, Long Island, N.Y. In the spring of 1969 he became general manager of the Stowehof Inn in Stowe. In 1972 he was promoted to general manager of the Mount Mansfield Co. Hotels, which included the Toll House Inn and The Lodge.

In November of 1977, Gerhard and Gucki purchased the Grand Motor Inn on the Mountain Road in Stowe and changed the name to the Salzburg Inn. They ran the inn with the help of Johannes and Matthais until they sold it in 1998. Gerhard was a highly skilled member of the Masters Ski racing circuit. He competed in numerous races throughout the United States. In addition he was one of the best tennis players in Vermont.

He was Stowe Tennis Club champion for 13 times from 1970 to 1990 and won numerous titles in the New England Master's program. Gerhard had a mountain bicycle accident in September of 2000, which left him a quadriplegic, confined to his wheelchair and bed. In the summertime he could be seen on the Stowe Recreation Path "zipping down" the path in his wheelchair, which he called his "rather personalized steering it with his chin by means of a special "joystick" and going as fast as the chair would go. He loved the opportunity to visit on the path with many members of the community. Gerhard fought his injury with the tenacity that made him a sports champion.

Unfortunately the physical limitations developed into medical problems, which he could not overcome. Many members of the Stowe community, who were continually amazed by their strength and love for each other, will sorely miss Gerhard and Gucki. A funeral Mass will be said, in May with a joint burial planned at that time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Gerhard Schmidt Trust, 158 White Gates Lane, Stowe, Vt. 05672, to be used for final expenses of burial and converting the home back into a single Stafford Funeral residence.

The Home in Stowe is in charge of services. ALBERT A. VERRET SOUTH BURLINGTON Albert A. Verret, 86, of 7 Aspen Drive died at his home Tuesday, March 25, 2003. He was born in Burlington on May 5, 1916, the son of Alexander and Anna (Gravel) Verret.

He was a graduate of St. Michael's College, Class of 1938. On April 14, 1941, he was married in St. Joseph Church in Burlington to Barbara Cote. She predeceased him in Mr.

Verret was the operator of Alex Verret Sons Supermarket for on Shelburne many years. Most recently he had worked 1 for Hannaford on Dorset Street retiring just this year. He was past president and secretary of the Vermont Retail Grocers Association, a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, and a member of the BPOE Lodge 916 in Burlington. He served the community as a volunteer at Fletcher Allen Health Care for many years. He was a member of St.

John Vianney parish. He is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Suzanne and Albert DeLorenzo of Newburgh, N.Y., Alice and John Reed of Harvard, John and Margaret Verret of Sharon, George and Verret of Weston, Anne and Forrest Speck of Amesbury, Mary and Thomas Tessier of Burlington, and James and Diane Verret of Montpelier; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his dear friend and companion, Olga Callahan and her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 27, at 12:30 p.m. in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery.

at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. MYRTLE E. KIMBALL ZEPHYRHILLS, HINESBURG Myrtle E. Kimball 77, passed away March 21, 2003, in Tampa. She is survived by daughter Deborah Ostrofsky of Conneaut Lake, son Howard Kimball, and daughter Rebecca Valentino, both of Hinesburg; grandchildren Johanna and Erik Ostrofsky of Meadville, Crystal and Heath Owen of Hinesburg, and Colin and Lindsay Kimball of Hinesburg; sister Ruth Lund of East Haven; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by husband Richard A. Kimball; brother Andrew Barton; sisters Bernice Lane and Isabelle Decoursey. Myrtle was born March 21, 1926, in Burlington, daughter of George Ernest Newton and Ruth Barton Newton. She graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1944, attended Gordon College in Boston, from 1945-1947 and transferred to Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., graduating with an AB degree in 1949. She was a teacher at Enosburg Falls High School for three years and Essex Junction High School for two years.

She taught middle school social studies at Hinesburg Elementary School for 20 years. She was also an interpreter at Shelburne Museum from 1990 to 1998. Presently she worked as a substitute teacher for the East Pasco School District in Florida. She was a member of. the Alliance Church of Zephyrhills, and the Community Alliance Church of Hinesburg (Hinesburg church originating in her home).

She also served as a Sunday school teacher in both the Community Alliance Church of Hinesburg and the Zephyrhills Alliance Church. She was active in both children's and adult ministries in both of these churches. Myrtle's hobbies and interests were Bible study and teaching and working in the church, local history projects, historical research and stamp collecting. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Alliance Church in Hinesburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Camp Scholarship Fund of the Community Alliance Church, 190 Pond Road, Hinesburg, Vt. Corbin Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant Essex Junction, in charge of arrangements. JOHN T. LEFEBVRE BURLINGTON BURLINGTON John T. Lefebvre, 44, died unexpectedly at his home March 19, 2003.

He was born in Burlington on Oct. 3, 1958, to Bernard and Paulita (Barbeau) Lefebvre. He leaves his daughter, Jocelyn Lamphere; a granddaughter, Kelcey; his father, Bernard D. Lefebvre; three brothers and their wives, Bernard and Janet, Donald, and Richard and Patricia Lefebvre; three sisters and their husbands, Vickie and Steve Karnes, Maria and Brad Beauchemin, and Shirley and Paul Stephens; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A private service will be held later in the spring.

Arrangements are by Elmwood-Meu- nier. WILLIAM E. McDONALD GEORGIA William E. McDonald, 70, of Stonebridge Road died Tuesday morning, March 25, 2003, Holmes Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Fla. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and a complete obituary notice will follow in a later edition of this paper.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home of Milton. MARY L. PERRY MILTON Mary L. Perry, 61, a longtime resident of Milton, passed away Tuesday morning, March 25, 2003, in the Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill. Mary was diagnosed with cancer in late summer and was at Midwestern undergoing treatment.

She was very tired and may she now rest with God. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and a complete obituary notice will follow in a later edition of this paper. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home of Milton. ELEANOR POTTER SMITH WEYBRIDGE- Eleanor P. Smith of 7 Prunier Road, Weybridge, died March 24, 2003, in the Helen Porter Nursing Home.

She was born April 10, 1912, in Amherst, N.H., the daughter of Frank and Alice (Wood) Potter. She graduated from Cambridge Latin High School (Cambridge, Mass.) and went PAID NOTICES on to one year at the New England Conservatory of Music. She married Dewey W. Smith on Aug. 16, 1935.

They lived on the family farm in Amherst, where she raised her family and ran a successful catering business. She served the Milford, N.H. Rotary for 12 years and the Milford Lions Club for eight years. She also catered many weddings and banquets. Eleanor was the leader of the Trail Blazers 4-H (Horse) Club, was an active member of the Rebekahs, the Souheagan Club and the First Congregational Church of Milford.

With her husband, two sons, Wesley and Harold (Bucky), and their families, she moved to the farm in Weybridge in 1968. Eleanor remained active in the family business as well as becoming active in the Farm Bureau, Addison County Milk Promotion, Weybridge Ladies Aide, and the handbell choir at the Weybridge Church. was a very special person, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, who loved everyone in that most rare and precious way, unconditionally, with no reservations, no requirements or restrictions. She is survived by her brother, Everett and his wife, Betty, of Natick, her daughter, Cynthia and husband, Sheldon Weiss, of Mountainside, N.J.; her sons, Wesley and his wife, Gail, of Weybridge, Harvey and his wife, Donna, of New Haven, Harold (Bucky) of New Haven; sistersin-law, Elizabeth McGuirk and Lucile Young; and brother-in law, Phillip Smith and his wife, Glenice; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Dewey, her twin brother Edmond Potter, and her sister, Edna Potter, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at the Weybridge Congregational Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28. The calling hours will be Friday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Project Independence, P.O.

Box 581, Middlebury, Vt. 05753. PAMELA J. WHITNEY STOWE Pamela J. Whitney, 50, passed away at her home in Des Plaines, on Sunday, March 16, 2003.

She was born May 5, 1952, in Des Plaines, the daughter of Claire Allard Currie and Veral Whitney. was extremely well read and educated. She had a Ph.D in psychology, a Ph.D in natural medicine and attended Bible college. Currently, she had been a health care educator residing in Stowe. In her life Pamela influenced the lives of many through her healing touch and encouragement.

Pamela leaves those whose lives she's touched better and brighter for having known her. Pamela is survived by Peanut; her loving friends; her mother, Claire, of Nelson, New Zealand; her brother, Wayne Whitney and his of Strum, as well as several nephews. She was predeceased by her father. A memorial service well be held at the Stowe Community Church on Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the care of the Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe.

BURLINGTON CITORIK, Dorothy F. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at 11a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Burlington with the Rev. Richard Hibbert officiating. Music was provided by organist David Neiweem and by Christ the King Folk Group.
