Leahy found Turgeon in front of a store and told him he was under arrest. Turgeon ran and, after being tripped by a passer-by, pulled a gun from under his shirt and shot Leahy, authorities said. A search involving dozens of state and local police ensued while Leahy underwent surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Turgeon was later arrested. Leahy spent a year recovering from his wounds. He is now a detective sergeant and arson investigator in Williston. In July 1991, Turgeon accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to six charges. The state dropped three lesser charges, but Turgeon appealed after getting a more lengthy sentence than he bargained for.

Turgeon has been in jail since the incident. The Associated Press WHITE RIVER JUNCTION The Windsor man who shot and critically wounded a Vermont State Police trooper four years ago has been sentenced to up to 35 years in prison. John Turgeon, 28, was sentenced Wednesday on eight charges stemming from the October 1990 incident that left Trooper Joseph Leahy in critical condition. Turgeon was given IS to 20 years in jail for attempted murder and five to 15 years for aggravated assault. The second sentence will be served after the first sentence has been completed.

Sentences on the other charges will be served at the same time. The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between Turgeon and his estranged wife. Turgeon got involved in a chase with Windsor police, during which Turgeon shot and hit a police cruiser with shotgun pellets. The chase ended in downtown Windsor with Turgeon tost altetirne Fugitive convicted of drug charges RUTLAND A former Glover man and charter member of the "Most Wanted Federal Fugitives from Vermont" has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to cultivating marijuana, the U.S.

Attorney's Office said. Brian Brophil, a 46-year-old former fugitive, was on the loose for about three years until late 1993. In August 1993 he was featured on the television show "Unsolved Mysteries." Brophil was charged in 1990 with co-defendants David Bian-chini, Allan Blume, Roger Ward, and Toby Pett. The charges stemmed from a search of Bro-phil's Northeast Kingdom farm, where about 1,400 marijuana plants were found along with supplies used to cultivate and package the drug, officials said. The co-defendants have pleaded guilty.

No date was set for Brophil's sentencing. Jeffrey Lee Hall, 24, was traveling north on 1-89 in Berlin about 8:30 a.m. in a 1990 black Honda at speeds up to 100 mph. Hall ran a stop sign at the bottom of the exit ramp in Middlebury slid sideways across both lanes of the Middlesex Center Road, police said.

Hall's car went off the north shoulder, and an unmarked po-j lice car, trying to block Hall, slid into his car. Hall ran into the woods. Middlebury to hold agriculture day MIDDLEBURY An agriculture legislative field day will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Main Event behind G. Stone Motors on U.S. 7.

Representatives of the Addison County Farm Bureau, Vermont Agriculture Department, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the University of Vermont Extension System will attend. The field day will include welcoming remarks by Vermont Agriculture Commissioner George Dunsmore, a 9 a.m. panel discussion on clean water, and a late-morning panel discussion of new technology and agriculture. Bus tours will go to the Audet dairy farm in Orwell and the Shoreham Apple Cooperative.

Legislators from Addison, Chittenden and Rutland counties have been invited. Trinity program takes applications Low-income, single parents seeking college degrees may apply for January enrollment in Trinity College of Vermont's Community Scholars program. The program combines college work with community service projects as a way of recognizing the value of a student's contribution to others. Scholarships and a network of other services, including child care, are available. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to public service and financial need as well as meet Trinity's academic standards.
