www.burlingtonfreepress.com 3B Neighbors worry about highway's impact The Associated Press BENNINGTON Property owners near the planned northern leg of the Bennington Bypass say they're worried about the road's impact on their neighborhood. About 45 owners turned out for a court hearing Wednesday in which the state was required to show why it needed to take private property along the highway's route. Some expressed concern that downtown traffic snarls simply would be transferred to their neighborhood; others said they State taking private property for Bennington Bypass worried that trucks coming down steep Vermont 9 would not be able to stop at a new traffic light Others expressed simple confusion and said it had been hard to obtain clear answers from the state Agency of Transportation. "I still don't know what they want," said Chris Harrington, the owner of a business on Woodford Road. What the state wants depends on the property owner.

Some may be asked for 2-foot-wide easements; others will be asked to turn over their land entirely. Officials say two houses will need to be razed. Steve Goodrich, owner of Kelly Fuels at 1036 E. Main was most vocal about truck traffic. He said truckers often pull into his driveway to cool overheated brakes.

He also worried that a trucker who lost control coming down Woodford Mountain on Vermont 9 might steer onto his property to avoid stopped traffic and hit one of his fuel tanks. James Harris, the state's project manager for the bypass, said a state study found that runaway trucks would not be a problem and that there was no need for a runaway truck ramp. Some urged that the road be moved farther east, to intersect with Vermont 9 in Woodford. Oth ers questioned the accuracy of the state's survey and other information. State officials sought to emphasize the importance of a bypass to relieve traffic congestion in the center of Bennington.

"From a highway perspective, there would be a continued deterioration of the transportation system of Bennington," said Gregory A. Edwards, the official in charge of plan development. Police seek help in Maitland case Officials release surveillance photo of missing Franklin teen at casino Fletcher Allen Health Care will begin vaccinating some staff members against pertussis, or whooping cough, in light of an outbreak of the illness at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. In a letter to the Fletcher Allen staff earlier this week, Dr. John Brumsted said there have been no cases of hospital-acquired whooping cough in Burlington, so the vaccinations are a precaution. The first to be vaccinated will be staff members who regularly are in contact with babies younger than 12 months. Whooping cough outbreaks occur in communities each year, Brumsted, the' hospital's interim chief quality officer, wrote.

The contagious infection of the respiratory tract is treatable with antibiotics. Symptoms include a persistent cough after cold-like symptoms. Coughing often occurs in bursts that may be followed by a whooping sound or vomiting. Coughing can last up to 12 weeks. Infants less than six months of age may not have a typical cough, but may appear to have difficulty breathing.

The state Health Department is helping to investigate the Dartmouth outbreak and a suspected outbreak at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. One hundred and twenty members of the Dartmouth staff, including 50 Vermonters, have contracted the illness. Other cases have been identified or are under investigation among Vermonters in the White River Junction area, the Health Department said. Several possible cases are being studied among staff at the Bennington hospital and in the surrounding communities; no cases have been confirmed by laboratory tests. No other hospitals in Vermont have reported cases of whooping cough.

More information about whooping cough can be found on the Health Department Web site, vermont.govprevent pertussisPertussis.aspx charged Thursday with importing marijuana into the United States. Police said the car struck the rock with enough force that the right front wheel broke away from the axle.

The passenger, Scott Reynolds, was uninjured. He climbed out a side window and helped Hammond extricate himself. Hammond was taken to Fletcher Allen Hospital for treatment of back pain and cuts and bruises. The truck was a total loss, according to police. N.H.
