Journal LOCAL Friday, October 8, 2004 Downtown studied for possible streetcars A local coalition pays about $50,000 for feasibility report BY CARA ROBERTS MUREZ Statesman Journal Consultants are studying downtown Salem to figure out how feasible a streetcar system would be for the city. The study began a few weeks ago, said John Whittington, Salem-Keizer Transit development director, and has another months to go. "It's very much in the feasibility stage at this point," Whittington said. "No one knows if it's feasible or not. And that's what we want to find out." The streetcar, as proposed, would run one to two miles in the downtown area, probably including the Capitol Mall area.

It could go to the Salem Railroad Station, Salem Hospital, the Salem riverfront and the north downtown redevelopment district. The study is costing the transit district, city and downtown businesses about $50,000. Barriers identified in the Streetcar study The consultants, Consulting Associates, which has offices mPo Portland and San Francisco, and Portland engineering firm URS, plan to have more meetings soon with the key stakeholders, the streetcar study include: a Heavy traffic on Front Street between Union and Trade streets. Freight rail tracks with about seven daily trains and pedestrian sky bridges that span streets. Angle-in parking that might have to be changed to fewer, parallel spaces.

The streetcar might need to cross through Willson Park. However, the early report says that streetcars typically attract up to 50 percent more riders than buses on the same route. They also often draw private funding and are enjoyed by tourists. RoyJohn Balduc, who owns RoyJohn Designer Jewelers on Court Street NE, serves on the streetcar committee. He also committed money to the study because he thinks a streetcar in Rewards Subscribe using EZ Pay and Reader Loval D.

Tom Tweed July 2, 1940 October 5, 2004 Waivo Tweed on July 2, 1940. He grew up in the little town of Monitor, Ore. and spent idyllic summers as a child at the family beach house in Neskowin with his mother and younger sister, Tamara.

His father stayed home to run the family business, a John Deere dealership. As a teen, Tom was an avid Boy Scout and as an Eagle Scout traveled to various camps in the U.S. and hiked throughout Europe. Summers he spent time as a camp counselor. Tom attended OSU, pledged Delta Lau Delta fraternity and entered the ROTC program.

Tom met Gayle Ramberg his senior year and they married in 1963. Tom was planning to be a career army officer. With the death of his mother and the illness of his father, Tom left the army and came home to run the John Deere dealership at age 25. Tom's father passed away in 1965 and Tom and Gayle moved into the family home in Monitor. There were busy times and happy times with the birth of Tommy in 1966 and Erik in 1968.

Tom ran the business, farmed on the side, became a member of the Monitor School Board, volunteered at the Monitor Fire Dept. and became the leader of a Boy Scout troop in Mt. Angel. The family spent much time at the beach house at Neskowin, especially in the winter when Tom was not so busy. Tom spent hours on the beach and found scores of Japanese floats after the storms.

In 1976, Tom had a new large building erected in Woodburn and the small dealership grew into a large dealership. Tom became a member of the Woodburn Rotary and joined the board of directors of the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest. Tom was also a very active member and supporter of the Woodburn Eagles Club along with also belonging to the Silverton Elks. Community support was always tops on Tom's list.

Tom became a member of the OSU President's Club as a result of his financial support of the university. Tom had the ability to choose the right employees, which was and is, the key to keeping the business running efficiently. In the 1990's Tom was semi-retired and very involved in babysitting his adored grandson, Aaron.

He became a "soccer" grandpa taking Aaron to nursery school and swim lessons. Tom and Gayle and family had many wonderful vacations with sons and grandson. Tom was diagnosed with cancer on Sept. 14, 2004. His way of coping was to make sure that family a and business affairs were in order.

He attended an OSU Beaver game on Sept. 18. With complications setting in, Tom passed away quietly on Oct. 5, 2004 with his family by his side. He will be missed, but never forgotten, by those who loved him.
