"I don't know that. This is a performance game. It's a result-oriented game. We all know that. If I think something else gives us the best chance to win, then I'll do it.

That's what I've always done." Testaverde reacted matter-of-factly. "I really didn't know what to expect," he said. "The decision has been made and we go from there. We do what Coach tells us. That's our job." Said Foley: "You want to play.

'You want to go out there and compete. When they say you can't, it rips at you. It tears at you. But that's the business. "I'm backing the decision.

Sure I would like to play. Absolutely. But I also want what's best for this team. Whatever Bill decides is what's best for this team is what's best for this team. "I didn't protest.

He's been down this road before. He knows what he's doing. He's a proven champion. You don't ask any questions. You don't agree or disagree.

You move on and practice like you're supposed to practice. He knows what he sees. I'd like to think I'm healthy enough to play, but it's tough for me to critique myself in those ways." Asked if he had been assured that he would be back starting when Parcells feels he's ready, Foley said, "It's all yet to be seen. There are so many things that can happen. You just go and play every day like you've been and hope you can get in there sometime.

"I don't want to discuss what we discussed. Nobody's job is secure. If you're not playing well and you're not playing up to par, you're not going to play. Nobody has a job, really. You still have to prove yourself.

I'm not going to be back in the lineup if I don't show him the capabilities I have of playing the game at a high level." Bill Parcells says there is no quarterback controversy here right now. This is Glenn Foley's job. Vinny Testaverde is just going to be keeping his seat warm again at Giants Stadium on Sunday. Parcells made the announcement Thursday at Hofstra.

Testaverde will get his second straight start for the 1-2 New York Jets, opening the crucial AFC East game against the 3-0 Miami Dolphins. Foley said that his rib cartilage, which got separated by a helmet hit in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens and then cost him Week 3, is feeling good again after the bye week and he's ready to go. But, according to Parcells, it's still not fully happening for him in practice. So Foley will show up as either the No. 1 backup or the 91 1 quarterback.

"I maintain a pretty strong degree of uncertainty about Glenn's ability to execute everything that we think needs to be executed in the game plan," Parcells said. "In a game of this nature, I don't think it's comfortable for me as a coach or the coaching staff to go into the game with some degree of uncertainty. And so I'd rather go with a guy I'm certain is able to execute to the best of his ability. "I told Glenn when he's ready to play, he'll be back in the lineup. I told him that and that's what's going to happen.

I don't want to give you guys a crack. I don't want one shred of light." Foley passed for 415 yards and three scores in the opening overtime loss at San Francisco. Testaverde threw a career-high-tying four touchdowns in the Jets' 44-6 rout against the winless Indianapolis Colts two Sundays ago.
