MILTON Death Notices LEVENA SHIPMAN BUTLER WALLINGFORD, CONN. Levena Shipman passed from the loving arms of her family into the arms of the God she worshipped and served during a lifetime of faith.

To her family and friends, she was the ideal of love and to her last moments she enveloped them all with the glow and warmth of her generous spirit. Levena, a long time resident of Stratford, died in Wallingford, Sunday morning, November 22, 1 998. She would have been 94 on Thanksgiving day. She moved from Stratford to Newport, N.H. in 1971 )with her late husband, Edmund J.

Butler, Sr. They moved to Walling- ford in 1980. Mrs. Butler, daughter of Robert E. Lee and Effie Joslin Shipman, was born in Ithaca, N.Y.

She graduated from the New Haven Normal School and enjoyed a long career in teaching in the Stratford school system. Her first teaching position was in the one-room Booth Hill school in Trumbull. The Butlers were members of the Stratford Baptist Church and were active in state and national Baptist organizations. They devoted many years of service through Masonic activities. Mr.

Butler was a Past Master of America Lodge 132 and a Past District Deputy while Mrs. Butler served in several official capacities as a member of the Eastern Star and Amaranth. She was also a former state officer of the Church Women United. Since moving to Wallingford, Mrs. Butler dedicated hundreds of hours in volunteer service to the Masonic Home and Hospital.

Music was a cornerstone of her life, and through her singing she brought inspiration and joy to those with whom she worshipped. She was an active soloist with the Masonic Home Choir and was rehearsing for the coming holiday season. Mrs. Butler is survived by four children, Laurel Fey, Edmund Jr. and his wife Christine, William and his wife Susan Harritt of Jericho, and Joslin Bolio and her husband Frank of Concord, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Mark Fey, Martin Fey, Nancy Fey- Yensan, Erik Fey, Susan Butler-Gra ham, Johanna Cornwell, Lisa Butler, Alanna Butler and Danielle Butler; and six great granchildren, Nathan, Samuel, Drew, Hannah, Maxfield and Sean.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 4 at 3 p.m. in the Masonic Home Chapel in Walling ford. Burial will be private. The B.C Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St. is in charge of the arrange ments.

Calkins, 72, of Colchester Commons, Colchester, Conn, died Sunday, November 29, 1998 at Windham Hospital. She was born September 5, 1926 in Irasburg and was married to the late Richard Calkins for 43 great years. She had been employed by the Windham Community Memorial Hospital for Burlington. v. Sr.

ELLIOT SEYMOUR PHELPS SOUTH HERO Elliot Seymour Phelps, 84, lifelong resident of South Hero, died Sunday November 29, 1998 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was born in Burlington February 24, 1914, the son of the late Sidney and Bernice (Tassic) Phelps. He married Ethel M. Smith who predeceased him on January 6, 1979. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Betty (Merrihew) Phelps in 1989. Elliot was a truck driver for H.P.

Welch, and a member of the Teamsters and Operating Engineers Union. In his later years, he worked as a carpenter for area contractors. He was a member of the Isle of Pat-mos Lodge 17 of South Hero. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, fishing for sturgeon and ice fishing in Lake Champlain. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Blanchard and husband Robert of Proctor; two sons and their spouses, Ronald and Susan of South Hero, William and Wanda of Grand Isle; six grandchildren, Kevin Blanchard, Daniel Phelps, Karen Blanchard, Cheryl Troville, Tina Phelps, and Derek Phelps; six great grandchildren; his sister, Helen My-herberg of Glenns Falls, N.Y.; two brothers, John Phelps of Gibbinsville, and Richard Phelps of St.

Delaney, 79, of South Burlington, died peacefully Monday, November 30, 1998 at his home following a short illness. He was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on May 12, 1919, the son of the late Walter and Ethel (Turpin) Delaney. He was married on June 29, 1940 to Lois Bradford in Dorchester, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He worked for 42 years with the Canteen Co. and later owned and operated Burlington Coffee Service, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, a Mason and a member of Scottish Rites, BPOE 916, an active member of South Burlington Senior Citizens Club, former member of the Burlington Veterans Club and a former secretary for the Order of DeMolay Lafayette Chapter. He is survived by his wife, Lois-of South Burlington; four children, Joanne Burke and her husband Walter of St. Johnsbury, Richard B.

and his wife Ann of Essex Junction, Gail Delaney of Holladay, and Walter and his wife Harriet of Alburg; six grandchildren, Timothy and Pat rick Burke, Sean and Laurie Delaney, and Stephanie and Jerad Delaney; two great grandchildren, Lillian McFarland and Shannon Burke; two sisters, Mae Coash of Encinitis, Calif, and Hilda Reid of Maiden, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at 1 p.m. in the Ready Funeral Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd, Burlington. WILFRED JOHN LAFOUNTAIN BRIDPORT Wilfred "Willv" John LaFountain, 56, died at his home on snake Mountain Road, Sunday. No vember 29, 1998. He was born Au gust lb, 1942 in Bridport, the son of Aline (LaFraboise and Ravmonrt LaFountain. He was married to Madelyn Fitzgerald in 1962.

He owned and operate LaFountain's Garage in Bridport and was a member of the Bridport Fire Department, the Eagles Club in Vergennes and a fan of the Demolition Derby. He is survived by his wife Madelyn at home; one son, Wilfred Jr. of Bridport; four daughters, Linda LaFountain of Cornwall, Minda LaFountain of Vergennes, Brenda Sampson of Addison, and Andrea Armell of Middlebury; one brother, Robert LaFountain of Weybridge; two sisters, Louise Mazaca of R.I. and Jeannette Cyr of Middlebury; nine grandchildren and his mother, Aline LaFram-boise of Bridport. PAID NOTICES Funerals Held WINOOSKI PIDGEON, Cleon J. "Bud" A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, November 30, 1998 at 10 a.m. in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Lavalley officiating.

In attendance were delegations from the VT Army National Guard, the VT Air National Guard, the State of Vermont, and faculty and students from the St. Francis Xavier School. The Eucharistic ministers were Thomas Kane and Joyce, Irvine. The music was by Gertrude Picher and Thomas Kane. Interment followed in the St.

Francis Xavier cemetery with Father Lavalley offering committal prayers. Full military honors were accorded the deceased by members of the Vermont Army National Guard. Bearers were, Michael Pidgeon Roll- and Bissonnette, Maurice Metivier, Laurie Coutu, Phillip Poney and Gerald Dupont. Arrangements were by the LaVigne Funeral Home, Winooski. The Pidgeon family would like to thank everyone from their kindness and special care, especially Dr.

Steady, died peacefully at his home Sunday, November 29, 1998. He was a lifelong resident of Burlington, bom January 2, 1909, son of Frederick H. and Matilda (Murray) Stead. On June 1, 1940 he married Arm-ande Betty LaRoche in St. Anthony's Church.

He was a graduate of Cathedral High School, and a veteran of World War II, having served with the Eighth Air Force in Europe. In 1974, he retired from Blodgett Supply Co. Inc. and Vermont Appliance Co. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years; a daughter, Barbara Jane Adryan of Redwood City, sons, Roy A.

Steady of San Francisco, and John M. Steady of Burlington; tnree grandchildren, Alyssa Adryan Wallace of Davis, Justin M. Steady and Jessica M. Steady of Burlington; and a great grandson, Logan L. Bean.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery.

IRENE CHANDLER BRIDPORT Irene (Woodbury) Chandler, 94, passed away Monday, November 30, 1998 at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury. She was born in Weston October 6, 1904, the daughter of George A. and blanche M.

(LaFrance) Woodbury. Irene was a lifelong resident of Bridport and a Graduate of Middlebury High School Class of 1923. She was a member of the Bridport Congrega tional Church and the Bridport His torical Society; she was also a member of the Bridport Homemakers Club and a member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by one daughter, Jean Moorby of Bridport; one sister, Amy W. Patterson of South Burlington; two sisters-in-law, Mary Woodbury of Shelburne and Emilie Woodbury of South Burlington; two grandchildren, Leslie and her husband Fred Bell of Colchester, and George W.

Reynolds of Hinesburg; six great grandchildren, Ron Snyder Jr. of Cheryl Pitt of Tanya Snyder of Colchester, Heidi Camlev of Winooski, Darren Reynolds of Texas, and Heather Reynolds of Fer-risburg; six great great grandchildren, Meagan Snyder, Ronald Snyder III, Makayla Snyder, Lauren Pitt, James Bell and Alysia Camley. Also surviving is her very close friend Leonard Moquin. She is predeceased by her husband, Harlow Chandler who died December 11, 1971; two brothers, Robert M. Woodbury and M.

Glynn Woodbury; and one sister, Elizabeth Woodbury. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Bridport Congregational Church. The Rev. Richard Esty, Pastor will officiate.

Graveside committal services and burial will follow in the Bridport Central Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. where Eastern Star services will be conducted in the evening.
