Chicago Tribune, Sunday, June 7, 1987 Section 3 9 GOLF Kite flies high despite some turbulence ROUNDUP 4 133. Rodriguez made an eagle-3 with an 18-foot putt on the sixth hole, a 485-yard par 5, and also finished with a 69 for a 136 total. British Masters Mark McNul-ty and Ian Woosnam shared the third-round lead with 9-under 207s in Woburn, England. McNulty defied a ferocious wind and driving rain to shoot a 1 -under 71. Woosnam, who shot a 72, had an unusual end to his round.

He waited several minutes for a ruling before holing a 12-foot birdie putt on the last green. There was a sudden downpour as he played his next-to-last shot, and the path between his ball and the hole was covered with hailstones while thunder and lightning flashed overhead. Woosnam thought play should have been stopped because of the conditions. The tourney director said he did not think there was any danger from the lightning, and Woosnam made his putt. British Amateur Paul Mayo ended Peter McEvoy's hopes of winning the tournament for the third time by scoring a 3-and-l vic-toty over two rounds at Prestwick, Scotland.

McEvoy, the 1977 and 1978 champion, was a shot down after the first 18 holes and never got back on even terms. Froth Chicago Tribune wlree 'Tom Kite learned Saturday that the Tournament Players Club at Potomac, new home of the Kemper Open, has almost as many personalities as it has greens. Kite, a finesse golfer, cruised to a four-stroke lead with four holes remaining in the third round by mastering the stadium course. But he stumbled over the next three holes and finished with a 3-under-par 68 for the day and a 12-under 201 total. Kite held a one-stroke lead over Chris Perry, who shot a 70.

"You have to hit good shots or it will penalize you," Kite said of the TPC. "You can't slack off on this golf course no matter how big a lead you have." Kite, who has won at least one tourney in the last six years, bogeyed No. 4 but birdied 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 13 to reach 14 under. But he suffered bogeys on the next three holes to fall into a tie with Perry before regaining the lead with a birdie on the 18th hole. "I was playing so well, so IS, 16 and 17 were more surprises than anything else.

They were not good shots, but they were not terrible shots," said Kite, who is looking for his 10th career win and first since the 1986 Western Open. 136. Senior Players Reunion Bruce Crampton fought off an early challenge by Chi Chi Rodriguez with a 3-under 69 to take a three-stroke lead after two rounds in Dallas. Crampton, who fired a tournament record 8-under 64 Friday at Bent Tree Country Club, was at will advance to regional competition. The 26th Radix Cup, the annual battle between Illinois PGA section professionals and amateurs representing the CDGA, is Wednesday at Oak Park Country Club. The professionals have a 17-7-1 lead in the series, and won last year 13-2.

The pros will be represented by Gary Groh of Bob O'Link, Steve Benson of Hillcrest, Mike Harrigan of Thorngate, Jeff Matheson of Sunset Ridge, Jim Sobb of Highland Park, Doug Bauman of Pinecrest, Blair Subry of Foss Park, Ackerman of Aurora, Puckett of Twin Orchard and Bill Erfuth of Pine Meadow. Dave Ogilivie of Flossmoor will serve as the non-playing captain. Two-time defending CDGA champion Paul Hindsley of Skokie heads the amateur team made up of Hirsch, George Glickley of Olympia Fields, Gary March of Elgin, Rick Ten Broeck of Beverly, Dave Esler of Kemper Lakes, David Lind of Butler, Phil Kenny of Bob O'Link, Gunnar Bennett of Onwentsia and Jerry Maatman of Biltmore. Brad Finger of Lake Bluff, son of Knollwood Club pro Sherman Finger, and Caprice Scherer of Sullivan, daughter of professional Larry Endsley of Timberlake Golf Club, have won $1,500 Joe Jemsek scholarships from the Illinois PGA. Alan Griffin of Champaign, caddie master at Champaign Country Club and a University of Illinois student, and Justine Lazar of Northfield, daughter of Bryn Mawr pro Ken Bartosh, won $500 awards.

Finger also earned a national PGA scholarship worth $1,000 and is eligible for another $4,000 national award. McDonald's Championships, Ch. 7, 2 Kemper Open, Ch. 2, 2:30 Results in Scoreboard, P. 16 Ayako Okamoto knew how far behind she was entering the third round in Wilmington, Del.

But she hadn't expected to make up the entire seven-shot deficit in one day. "I look at every scoreboard. I wasn't surprised. It was okay," said Okamoto, who shot a 6-under 65 the best round of the tournamentto tie Cathy Morse for the lead after three rounds. "I am thinking two or three under, not six," added Okamoto, who matched Morse's 54-hole score of 5-under-par 208.

Prairie Lands Classic Steve Thomas shot a 4-under 68 to take the lead after the second round of the $60,000 Tournament Players Association event in Urbana, 111. Thomas was at 10-under 134, one shot ahead of Jerry Haas going into Sunday's final round. Haas, brother of PGA player Jay Haas, shot a 66. Roy Biancalana matched the course record with a 65 and was at NOTEBOOK the PGA Tour. Ronnie Black, Bob Murphy and Waukegan's David Ogrin hold full-time playing privileges, while Rex Caldwell, Frank Conner and Bill Israelson didn't make the top 125 last year but are playing the tour when spots are If that's not enough, Wheaton's Gary Pinns, Arlington Heights' Roy Biancalana, Chicago's Lance Ten Broeck, Belleville's Jerry Haas and Wood Dale's Peter Jordan will be on hand.

Jordan, who plays on the TPA tour, knows all about No. 1 because Medinah is his home course. Bill Sakas of Skokie, Dave Erick-son of Westchester, Kevin Klier of Naperville, Bob Ackerman of Aurora Country Club and Earl Puck-ett of Twin Orchard head the local professional contingent. Lynn Jan-son of Comstock Park, will be attempting to qualify for his eighth Open. Lonnie Nielsen of East Aurora, N.Y., a former tour pro and PGA club pro player of the year, is a leading contender.

Local qualifying medalists Joel Hirsch of Chicago and John Morrison of South Holland are among the group of 14 amateurs. Michael Podolak of Fargo, N.D., former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, is also in the field. Crank up those metal drivers, it's long drive time. The first local qualifier for the National Long Drive Championship is June 12 at Zigfield Troy Golf Range in Woodridge with a second at Green Valley Range in Hanover Park.

Contestants pay $5 for three balls and can hit as many balls as they like. Players must place their drives within a 40-yard wide fairway. Open sectional qualifying at Medinah Country Club might have been disappointed when they learned they wouldn't be playing it's famed No. 3 championship course. It's likely they didn't stay disappointed for long. Medinah No. 1, which will play host to the 36-hole final step before the June 18-21 U.S.

Open at San Francisco's Olympic Club, is one of the great unknown courses in the Chicago area. It has always been, and always will be, overshadowed by No. 3, which will be the site of the 1988 U.S. Senior Open and the 1990 U.S. Open.

But No. 1 can stand on its own. "It is, without a doubt, one of the finest tests of golf in the Midwest," said Dennis Davenport, executive director of the Chicago District Golf Association, which conducts the U.S. Open qualifiers. "It's one of the two golf courses in Chicago that really doesn't get enough credit.

Medinah No. 1 and Olympia Fields South have courses next to them that have bigger reputations." No. 1, which has been used in local qualifying before, gets its chance to show off because of work being done on No. 3's 1st, 15th and 16th greens in preparation for the Senior Open. It has a 72.8 course rating by the CDGA, while No.

3's championship rating is one of the highest in the country at 75.3. It is not as long as No. 3 and will be played at 6,308 yards for the sectional. The 608-yard, par-S ninth hole and the 445-yard, par-4 12th are highlights. A field of 78 players will be playing for nine spots at The Olympic Club.

Those nine spots could be hard to come by. Of the 63 professionals, six are playing SpsdsS Qcnus! Ouy Now end Gst Car s1S9 Velus flfSspter Pcdicgo at Flo Extra Cost! Entry for the tournament, whose proceeds go to Ronald McDonald Children's Charities, is $400 for golfers and includes lunch and special souvenirs.
