July 8. 1996. in Voss. Norway, following a short illness. She was born Jan.

22. 1911. in Albany. the daughter of William P. and Frances R.

Benjamin. After graduating from high school in Jersey City. N.J.. she majored in Creek at Middlebury College, graduating in 1932. She later earned a master's degree in library science from Simmons College in Boston, Mass.

She was married to Chester H. Clemens in 1935. During the 1930s, she was branch librarian In the Baltimore Public Library System in the Enoch Pratt Library. During World War II, while her husband served in the U.S. Navy, she worked as a nurse's aide in Arlington, and served as an air raid warden.

Following the war, she and her husband moved to the Boston area, where she became active on the Hingham Public Library board of trustees. During her tenure as chairwoman, she oversaw construction of a new library building that received national acclaim. In the early 1970s she moved with her husband to Shoreham. Mr. Clemens died Feb.

DAVID F. SMITH HARDWICK David F. Smith, 64. died at hts noma Tuesday. July 9.

1996. after a courageous batue with cancer. He was bom in Hardwick. June 17. 1932.

the son of the late Dr. Arthur L. Smrm and Franceses (Heath) Smith. David was a 1950 graduate of Hardwick Academy and Johnson State College in 1954. Ha taught school Vermont for five years.

He was employed as a planner in the Vermont Agency of Transportation for 35 years, retiring in May 1996. David was the husband of the former Yvonne Allaire, whom he married Dec. 19. 1953. Besides his wife and his mother, he is survived by two sons.

July 5. 1996, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. He was born in New York City on May 21. 1911, the son of Charles and Anna Weinstein. He was educated at Townsend Harris High School and City College of New York and taught art in New York City high schools from 1933 to 1952.

The political pressures of the McCarthy era caused him to leave teaching and open one of the first art material stores in Westchester County, which he managed until his retirement in 1974. He was married to Julia Kaufman from 1935 until her death in 1978. In 1991, he left his longtime home in Yonkers and moved to South Burlington. The caring kindness he received at both Pillsbury Manor and the Fletcher Allen Dialysis Unit made his last years satisfying ones. Up until his final days he maintained a passionate interest in music, art, the natural world and current affairs.

He is survived by his devoted companion, Sylvia Diamond; his son, Julian and his wife, Gwyneth Evans of Wellington, New Zealand; and by his son Rick and his wife, Andrea Serota, and their son, Jason, of Adamant. He also leaves Jonathan Winston and Suzanne Rexford-Winston and their children, Liza and Zak. There will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vermont Kidney Association, Box 244, Burlington, Vt. 05402.

died Tuesday. July 9. 1996. in Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He was born in New York City, Sept.

29, 1902, the son of William and Martha (Tart) Ryerson. He was educated in Duluth, and granduated from St Paul's School in Concord, N.H. In 1919 and again in 1920 he was awarded the Hargate Medal for being the best student in mathematics. He earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Yale University in 1925. While at Yale he played football and squash, but primarily spent his time on the Yale rowing team.

Due to an injury, he painfully watched from the banks of the river in Paris as his team won the Olympics. Following graduation, he traveled with friends in Western Samoa, Hawaii. Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Europe, working on a sheep ranch, a sugar plantation and building a railroad. Returning home, he worked as a cadet engineer to the personnel supervisor of the Philadelphia Gas Works. In 1944, he began employment as an executive with the Sun Oil Co.

in Philadelphia. He created and ran the Sun Tech Evening School. He retired in 1967 from Sun Oil Co. In 1967 he came to Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center and became the director of placement, where he built an extraordinary record for job placement, reaching an average of 90 to 98 percent. He expanded the school's reputation outside of Vermont.

He attracted recruiters from throughout New England and occasionally from firms like Texas Instruments. Recruiting companies who sought VTC students grew from 30 to 80 during his 15-year tenure. He retired from VTC at the age of 80 in 1982. He was the sponsor of the Ryerson Award for Excellence in Freshman Mathematics and Physics at VTC, which he awarded annually. He had received the Distinguished Service Award from VTC in 1982, and in 1993 was voted an Honorary Alumnus.

He became the first executive director of the Randolph Chamber of Commerce in 1983. He was instrumental in revitalizing the Chamber to one with a threefold increase in membership. (He was a part-time director with a full-time job). He was an avid outdoorsman and traveled extensively. He took his children on bicycle trips, camping trips, weeks at the ocean and one grand camping expedition across the U.S.

and back. He started skiing at the age of 65. In his late 80s he took a canoe trip to the Okefenokee Swamp in Florida; in 1993 he visited Denmark; and in 1994 he traveled to Alaska, where ha enjoyed rvs Vst wfuteater ratang trip, followed by a tnp to Sweoert. Ha was a board member of the Green Mountain Development the American Heart Association, "White River Vaney Unit" and of the board of Protect Youth in Randotoph. He served as an air raid warden in Chestnut HiB, as a visiting instructor.

He was also a member of the Vermont Association of Chamber Executives, the Vermont Society of Association Executives and Tau Alpha Pi. He is listed in "Whoa Who in the East" "Who's Who Finance and Industry." and "Who's Who in the WortO." He wil be remembered for his respect love and loyalty to others, for his sense of humor, and for leaving his workplace and community a better place. He married Jean Hamilton in May of 1936: she died in 1973. In 1974 he married Henrietta Keil; she died in 1992. He leaves two daughters.

He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Ryerson, in 1960; a grandson, John Bore, in 1962; a twin sister, Elizabeth; and a stepgranddaughter, Jane Dudhk. WILLIAM SOWDEN SIMS SHELBURNE William Sow-den Sims, 84, died peacefully in his sleep in Wake Robin Life Care Community, on Tuesday, July 9, 1996. He lived in Washington, D.C., and Chevy Chase, from 1949 to 1993. He was born in Newport, R.I.. the son of Admiral William S. Sims and Anne Erwin Hitchcock.

He was educated at St. George's School in Newport and at Harvard, where he earned A.B. and A.M. degrees. After study at the London School of Economics, he served during and after World War II in the political intelligence and historical sections of the U.S.

Naval Headquarters in London, where his father had served in the Great War. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1949 and served in Argentina from 1949 through 1952, and at the headquarters until his retirement in 1972. He was for many years a worker for the annual Goodwill Book Sale in Washington, and was a member of the Arlington Chess Club and the Harvard Club of Washington. He was a supporter of Common Cause, Planned Parenthood, and handgun control, and this year was to have been honored as a founder of the Ethan Allen Homestead. At Wake Robin he was appreciated as an intellectual resource, a wit and a prominent chess player.

Mr. Sims was predeceased in 1993 by his wife of 34 years, Mary Cavett Newsome; and by his sister, Adelaide Sims of Brookline. He is survived by his sisters, Margaret Sims Hopkins of Shelburne and Anne Sims Morison of Cambridge, by his brother, Dr. Ethan A. H.

She was a former resident of Los Angeles. where she was employed at M.K. Diamonds Products for 27 years, retiring 1982. She is survived by five sons. Bruce Moquin of New Castle.

05478. GLADYS S. MERCIA MORRISVILLE Gladys S. Mercia, 94, a longtime resident of Morrisville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 1996. Gladys was born In Duxbury, Dec.

28, 1901, the daughter of William and Alice (Hoy) Smith. She married Ernest Mercia, Oct. 14, 1920. He predeceased her Dec. 3, 1977.

Gladys maintained her home on Elmore Street until January 1995, when she became a resident of the Village Manor Care Home on Main Street. She had a green thumb and everyone admired her many plants and flowers. She loved to watch the birds, and her feeders were always filled with a variety of birds, summer and winter. Gladys was an avid card player and was known for her quick wit. She was well known for her baking and her talent in needlecraft and embroidery.

Gladys was a member of the Puffer United Methodist Church, Morrisville, and the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 33. She is survived by two sons and their wives, "Nob" and Ellie of Morrisville, and Leonard and Shirley of Williston; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchilden; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Avis Alexander of Morrisville; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her toy poodle, Beau, often referred to as her "Little Man." Gladys was predeceased by a brother, Earl Smith; and four sisters, Doris Alexander, Peart Kimball, Agnes O'Shea and Belle Andrews. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Barbara Mercia.

Elsie M. Messier, 81, widow of Bernard Messier, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, July 9, 1996, at her home. She was born in Abercorn, Quebec, Aug. 12, 1914, the daughter of Isaac and Rosalie (Benoit) Couture. Elsie had been a resident of Enosburg most of her life and a member of St.

John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending her time reading and visiting with her friends. She is survived by a son, Richard Messier of Burlington; two daughters, Janet Carty of Burlington and Deborah Baldwin of Me-thuen, 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Donald Ravey. Zeberiah Snow, a grandson of Mrs. Cote's, was altar server. An honor guard was formed by the members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Sharing special remembrances for the family were Sher-rie Hobbs and Phillanne Armstrong.

Music was provided by Lucy Dupont and Mrs. Gertrude Picher. Interment followed in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery with Father Lavalley offering committal prayers. Bearers were Mrs.

Cote's grandchildren, Lisa Cote-Coughlin, Charles Lyman Cote, Stuart Edward Cote, Sherry Lee Cote and Tom Coughlin, and Mrs. Cote's nephew, Robert Racicot. Arrangements were by LaVigne Funeral Home in Winooski. HINESBURG DUELL. Janet F.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia C. Bryant, and son-in-law, William N. Bryant, both of Tru-mansburg, N.Y.; a son, Timothy H. Clemens, and daughter-in-law, Barbara R. Bosworth, both of Shoreham; three stepdaughters, Kay Gunnison, Penny Carr and Anne Quoos, all of Crown Point; four grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn B. Megathlin of Cohasset, in 1978. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at Middlebury College. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Middlebury College or a favorite charity. GEORGE W.

DUFFY SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. George W. Duffy, the former owner of Shangri-La Resort in Paradise Valley, died Tuesday, July 2, 1996. He was born in Tuckahoe, N.Y. He was a World War II and Korean War Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Joan and brother, Jerome T. and his family of Swanton, Vt. MADELINE C. KING EAST BERKSHIRE Madeline C. King, 75, widow of Harrison King, died Tuesday evening, July 9, 1996, in Northwestern Medical Center in St.

Albans following a long illness. She was born in Sutton, Quebec, March 23, 1921, the daughter of Carl and Myrtle (Little) Royea. Mr. and Mrs. King owned and operated King's Garage in Rich-ford for 30 years and later started a garage in Berkshire, which they operated until they retired in 1990.
