The astonishing thing about last week's spectacular lunar orbit and the accompanying live television shots of the moon is how logical it was. It had all been predicted for decades; and once the secret of television transmission had. been understood, it was only a matter of time and space accommodations that a television camera could be included in the equipment. I suspect that a large section of the viewing public was far more blase about the spectacular feat than the scientists at Cape Kennedy. We have come to expect the predictable follow-through of any great technical triumph and once accustomed to the phenomena, our imagination plays less and less a part in the national celebration of scientific achievements.

We may all boast a powerful and awesome sophistication even though we may not fully un- THE NETWORKS have outdone themselves in attempting to-educate the public in matters of space travel and astronomy. In their intent to present full, live coverage of Apollo 8 and its perilous destiny, television newsmen assumed the very sober responsibility 'of teaching more than just informing. We viewers those of us excited enough to keep the late hours with the well- commentators and their galaxy of distinguished scientist assistants must rely wholly upon this new brand of authoritative news presentation. It is staggering but it is reassuring, too. For the networks to step out of their usual commercial role and dare to pre-empt this or that favorite show with Apollo 8's progress is one of the grandest sensations a viewer can An easy $700 for gags By DAN LEWIS TV Time Staff HOLLYWOOD Probably the easiest $700 that movie director-producer Otto Preminger ever made is the money he has received so far for the 20 minutes he gave to television's "Laugh-In." Laugh-In still reigns as television's most popular viewing program.

It has also become a performer's favorite. Just as top stars longed to become villains on "Batman" during its television rage, now everybody wants to be seen on Laugh-In. JOHN WAYNE, for instance, went on the program to tape a series of statements which had absolutely no meaning to him. "I did it because one of the writers is a friend and he asked me to do it," Wayne told me. He not only didn't know, or care, how his tapes would be used, he never even saw them.

"I hear some of the appearances were real lu- lus," Wayne said. One sure was. It questioned the manliness of Napoleon, who is alleged to have said, "Not tonight, Josephine." I told Wayne that on the show Rowan and Martin in their exchange had inquired if anyone knew what Napoleon meant when he imparted that information to Josephine. That's when Wayne appeared on the screen, dressed in black tie and tuxedo and responded: "I don't know, but anyone who would talk that way should ride side saddle." Wayne roared, then wondered put loud just how the remaining half dozen taped responses would be used. PREMINGER went into- the Rowan and Martin funfest without knowing what he would be doing and relished the prospect.

He taped his sequences several months ago and they've just started to appear. "I know only because I've started to receive checks from, the show," Preminger explained. So far, he's gotten four checks, so he assumes he's been seen four times. Each check (less deductions) amounts to $177 plus change, and. he assumes he's being paid at scale.

To do the sequences, Preminger took about an hour from his own busy schedule this past summer. He was in the midst of directing and producing his newest picture, "Skidoo," which costars such conventional characters as Jackie Gleason, Carol ning, Groucho Marx and Mickey Rooney. ALSO IN "Skidoo" is Alexandra Hay, who was arrested 40 times in 12 days while trying to perform in a play in Los Angeles called "The Beard." There was no rehearsal, not even an advance script, for Laugh-In, Preminger recalled. space feel. No doubt it stirs something patriotic in all of us to realize that competitive, privately-owned networks have thrown their total resources into the national space WERE THE truth to be told, pro football probably has a greater following than rockets to the moon; and were the events to be repeated on a regular basis lunar ratings would decline in inverse proportion to the general public's confidence that the men at Cape Kennedy and the reporters in the news rooms and television studios will provide the vigil that patriotism requires.

But no event in the history of television has generated such intensity as the Apollo 8 mission. We may look forward now to an ever-increasing display of scientific wonders: a landing on the moon and accompanying live television coverage; the establishing of bases there and continual television scanning' of the teij- rain and the earth below; television probing of the planets, especially Mars and Venus; and even the grim eventuality of disasters, collisions and international space crises. This great probing eye of the. nation's! It has been transplanted firmly in all of us. No more can we plead blindness, or wince or turn our heads to divert the light.

And how much longer, I won- der, will we be content only to stare at the listless and canned variety fare when we should by all rights be gazing at outer space and knowing the unknown?
