Seismologist Claims Utah In Danger 9 SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) A Utah seismologist agrees with the pioneer Mormon leader Brigham Young, who said of Utah, "This is the place." JBut Dr. Kenneth L. Cook, hfead of the University of UJtah geophysics department, has something else in mind. He warns that "this could be the place for a major disaster." Cook makes the point that 80 to 85 per cent of Utah's 1 million residents live along the Wasatch Front a 150-mile stretch west of the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains where the major Utah cities of Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo are located. "WE'RE literally astride an area of seismically active faults, or breaks in the earth'i strata, ans we're very vulnerable," Cook says.

From 1850, when the Mormon pioneers settled in the Salt Lake Valley, to 1965, more than 600 earthquakes were reported In fee state, and of these at least 38 were damaging. Only one quake, in Hansel Valley in 1934, caused ground breaking. But tremors at Elsinore in south central Utah caused about $100,000 damage in September 1921, and another $100,000 in damages a month later. At Logan in North Utah in 1962, a quake caused $1 million in damages. THE PRIME danger, according to Cook, need not come from the quake itself, but from fires caused by ruptured gas and electrical lines, as was the case in San Francisco in 1906.

Mormon pioneers settled in the Wasatch Front area because it offered a prime requisite water in the arid semidesert valley. As the Salt Lake metropolitan area grew to its present size of about one-half million persons, planners continued to carry water from mountain canyon reservoirs through aqueducts to the city below across the active Wasatch Fault.
