SPOT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12. 2003 STATESMAN JOURNAL 8BjiStatesmanJoumal.com Geirmsuniy favored final. Appleby takes Las Vegas lead Today cn TV The Germans are 6-5 against the Swedes, making the teams well matched. BY BARRY WILNER The Associated Press CARSON, Calif. The way Germany has handled every challenge in the tournament, it deserves to be favored over Sweden in today's Women's World Cup final.

No less an authority than the U.S. team expressed that opinion. Of course, the Americans beat Sweden in the tournament opener, then lost in the semifinals to the Germans 3-0. The Germans don't back down from asserting their attacking mode on opponents. They don't get frustrated if a team bunkers down on defense, simply kicking the ball out of danger and then looking for counterattacks.

In addition, according to U.S. coach April Heinrichs, the week off between the semifinals and the championship match works in Germany's favor. "If it was two days after the semis, Sweden would more likely win," she said. "They have gone through an incredibly difficult road, similar to what we had, with the travel and a very tough opening group and with little rest before games. They were used to (the grind).

"With six days of rest, Germany can play a high-energy game, and I think a high-energy game can prevail." Germany defeated Sweden in overtime to win the 2001 European Championship and holds a 6-5 edge against the Swedes. The Germans have outscored the opposition 22-3 here, with Birgit Prinz leading the tournament with seven goals. "It's important that our outside defense takes care of the midfielders, and I and Jane LAS VEGAS Stuart Appleby made three straight birdies on the back nine Saturday and shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead after the fourth round of the Las Vegas Invitational. Appleby, chasing his first tour win since 1999, is at 28-under 259 heading into today's final round of the 90-hole tournament. Steve Flesch, who started the day in a tie for the lead with Scott Verplank, shot 68 and is a stroke behind Appleby at 260.

Scott McCarron, who has never won the tournament despite contending several times, is three shots back after a 5-under 67. Robert Allenby (66) is four shots behind Appleby. TESKE ATOP SAMSUNG LEADERBOARD BY ONE THE WOODLANDS, Texas Rachel Teske is having fun at the LPGA Samsung World Championship and insists she's not paying attention to the leaderboard. "It just feels so good to hit good shots," the Australian-born Teske said after a 6-under 66 Saturday gave her a one-shot lead after three rounds. When she finally glanced at the scoreboard, at the 18th green at the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands, just north of Houston, she was tied with Se Ri Pak and Beth Daniel for the lead.

Then she rolled in a birdie putt her fourth birdie in the final five holes to claim the top spot all alone at 11-under 205. Like Germany, they've had stellar goalkeeping. Sweden's Caroline Joensson and Germany's Silke Rottenberg made the all-tournament team. April Heinrichs U.S. coach (Toernqvist) will take care of Prinz," central defender KaroLi-na Westberg said. "It's very important that we start aggressive, the same as we did against Brazil" in a 2-1 quarterfinal victory. Even if they stop Prinz, there are so many other top players on Germany's roster.

Meinert was the MVP of the WUSA and has been a great creator for Germany. Bettina Wiegmann, like Maren Meinert in her final World Cup game, has been dangerous all over the field. So has defender Sandra Minnert when she joins the attack, and Kerstin Garefrekes, who scored the winner against the United States on a header. "I always remember that it is my last game, and it is the World Cup final that is motivation enough," Wiegmann said. "I will be ready for Sunday, and my teammates will do the same." The Germans won't take Sweden lightly.

All they need do is recall that 2001 match at the Euros. "The coaches show us tapes of that game, and we know we only won on a golden goal," Wiegmann said. "We see that game and will remember that it was not an easy game." Nothing has been easy for Sweden in this event. But goalkeeper Jonny Walker stopped Johnson's penalty kick, which was one of only two shots on goal by Dallas in the game.

It was the first time in MLS history that two teams had combined to miss three penalty kicks in one game. One minute later, it appeared as if Dallas was going to net the game-winner when Ali Curtis' shot eluded Walker, but Eddie Gaven, a 16-year-old rookie who once played goalkeeper, headed the shot aside to preserve the tie. WIZARDS CALAXY1 KANSAS CITY, Mo. Igor Simutenkov scored a controversial goal in overtime to lead Kansas City to a victory against Los Angeles. The match between the MetroStars and Dallas Bum ended in a 0-0 tie Saturday night in a game that featured a league-record three missed penalty kicks. The tie enabled the MetroStars (11-8-9) to hold on to second place in the Eastern Conference standings, three points ahead of the New England Revolution. The MetroStars have two regular season games remaining, both against New England. Dallas (5-18-5) has the worst record in the league.
