wil LvittuJ MONDAY, JULY 29, 2002 STATESMAN JOURNAL 6B StatesmanJoumal.com imam 1 CONTINUED FROM 1B JJs' I demanding course of 2,032 miles seemed to test him during the race. He covered all that ground with an overall time of 82 hours, 5 min Surge's postseason run ends with loss in Spokane Armstrong ration to many people not just sports fans because of his struggle with testicular cancer, which spread to his lungs and brain and nearly killed him six years ago. His Lance Armstrong Foundation raises money for cancer survivors. "I can remember in 1999 being so nervous every day and worried that I would lose the race in an instant," Armstrong said Saturday. "I don't have those fears any more." But Armstrong knows he already has made his mark.

"Regardless of one victory, two victories, four victories, there's never been a victory by a cancer survivor," he said. "That's a fact that hopefully I'll be remembered for." closer to the Tour record of five titles, shared by four riders. Only Miguel Indurain won five in a row, from 1991-95. And Armstrong is the first American with four Tour trophies. Greg Lemond, the only other U.S.

champion of cycling's most prestigious event, won three. "It's always complicated, difficult to reach the maximum level," he said. "I love the race, my job, cycling." As he went up to the podium for the victory ceremony, Armstrong waved to the crowd, which roared its approval back at the rider who lives in Europe much of the year and often does interviews in French. The cyclist from Austin, Texas, has been a special inspi champagne enjoying a little sip early on and he took a congratulatory call from President Bush after the victory ceremony. "I'm really happy to finish," Armstrong said.

"It's a difficult race, three weeks. It's difficult mentally." Not Sunday, though. The 20th and final stage of 89'i miles into Paris is traditionally a. mostly ceremonial ride, and Armstrong took time to pose for photographs with an arm draped over the shoulders of another rider. Armstrong's tranquil ride to the finish mirrored the rest of the Tour.

Neither rivals nor the utes, 12 seconds. The winning margin against runner-up Jose-ba Beloki of Spain was 7:17, making it Armstrong's second-biggest victory. He beat AlCx Zuelle by 7:37 in 1999 for his first Tour de France championship. Raimondas Rumsas of Lithuania was third overall, 8:17 back No other rider finished within 13 minutes of Armstrong's total time. Thousands of fans watched Sunday as Armstrong moved SPOKANE, Wash.

The Cascade Surge's bid to make the Premier Development League's national semifinals ended Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Southern California Seahorses. The Surge got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 13th minute by Patrick Daka. Southern California's Jason Hotchkin scored the first of his two goals in the 30th minute, tying the game for the Seahorses. HotchMn's second goal came in the 87th minute. "We played a pretty good team tonight," Surge coach Miguel Camarena said.

"Both teams had a lot of opportunities We just needed to score one more." SCOREBOARD TODAY'S SPORTS EVENTS If the Aces lose the first game, the rematch will start at 5:30, said coach Rick Scott Scott said it's the first time a team from the Albany and Corvallis area has advanced so far in the Little League playoffs. The Aces played undefeated through the district and state levels, he added. If they win today, the Aces will be divisional champions. They will move on to the Western Regional Playoffs in Vancouver, in which they will face divisional winners from California and Arizona. The regional winner advances to the Little League World Series.

In Sunday's game, pitcher Melissa Scott picked up the win, throwing three shutout innings. She went 2 for 2 at the plate and scored three runs. Baseball CASCADE PAVING WINS ZONE 3 TOURNAMENT Jordan Bousquet hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to send Cascade Paving into the American Legion Triple-A state tournament by beating Mid-Valley 9-7. Cascade Paving, which won the Zone 3 tournament and regular season title, will host a state playoff game at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Ironically, it was an error that gave the Volcanoes a lead in the seventh inning.

Trailing by one run, Ortmeier hit a one-out single, and was scored on a long hit from Derek Bell, which Bell legged out for a triple. Dust Devils pitcher Jason Dooley threw a wild pitch on a 2-1 count to Matt Dryer and Bell scored to give Salem-Keizer a 7-6 lead. "We scored seven runs and we were threatening a couple more innings, a big hit could have taken us," Stanley said. The Dust Devils scored one run in the eighth inning to tie the score at 7-7, and in the ninth inning, a throwing error from Sobieraj allowed Bernier on base and a passed ball moved him to second. "We just didn't play defense real well and if you don't play defense real well, you're not going to win a whole lot of ball-games," Ortmeier said.
