The Cascade Surge fell to the Orange County Blue Star 3-0 Sunday in the Western Conference final of the Premier Development League playoffs. The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes banged out a 9-5 Northwest League victory Sunday night against Spokane at Avista Stadium. The Volcanoes won for the second straight night after opening the five-game series with three consecutive losses.

Salem-Keizer first baseman Will Thompson, who went 10 for 24 in the series, had a 4-for-5 night with a home run, double, two RBIs and three runs scored. His home run, in the ninth off of reliever Jon Wilson, capped the scoring for the Volcanoes. Salem-Keizer opened a 4-1 lead with a three-run third inning. The Volcanoes stretched their lead to 8-2 before Spokane rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Volcanoes had 15 hits.

In addition to Thompson's four-hit outing, third baseman Pablo Sandoval was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Designated hitter Jose Yens was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Salem-Keizer starting pitcher Sergio Romo allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. He struck out seven and allowed no walks. Four Volcanoes pitchers allowed three earned runs in relief.

The Volcanoes have today off before returning to action Tuesday when they open a five-game series against the Boise Hawks. Tuesday's game begins at 6:35 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium. Nearly 110 teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California competed through the weekend at the Cascade Futbol Club's Waterfront Tournament, vying for the title in their age divisions. Most teams in the championship rounds were playing their fifth game Sunday. Winners from each division were awarded gold medals.

In the Ull boys division, Cascade Futbol Club's Atlas, playing on their home turf, defeated Woodburn Morelia 2-1 to claim their fourth tournament title this year in as many tries.
