Nicholaus Bartlett, 24, was convicted of sexual assault on a 14-year-old, burglary and false pretenses, all felony charges. He also was convicted of three misdemeanors and a violation of probation.

The sexual assault charge stemmed from a sexual relationship between Bartlett and a teenage girl in 2002. At the time, Bartlett was on probation for a similar crime he was convicted of in Washington County. His probation specified that he was not allowed to associate with girls under the age of 16. Bartlett was sentenced Wednesday to a 10- to 20-year term, five of which will be spent in prison. Bartlett will serve the rest on probation.

He also is required to complete sex offender treatment programs. No mold found at school; dust suspected problem SPRINGFIELD Town school officials hope students can return to the Union Street Elementary School on Monday, as environmental specialists believe dust caused health-related problems in the building The school was closed April 1 after health concerns were raised about whether mold was growing in the school. Fire department officials then extended the closing through this week. After a thorough examination, representatives from Environmental Compliance Services of Brattleboro said the heating system used in the school caused dirt to be raised into the air. Springfield Superintendent Rose Rooth said officials hoped to reopen the school Monday after the building has been cleaned.

JOHNSBURY Julius Canns, a longtime Republican senator from Caledonia County, says he's running for re-election for the last time. Canns, 80, was first elected to the Senate in 1992.
