Statesman Journal news services MOSCOW Lance Bass of the boy band 'N Sync is working to finalize his contract with the Russian space agency, Russian officials said Monday, voicing optimism that the singer could catch an autumn flight to the international space station. Space agency spokesman Vyacheslav Mikhailichenko said Bass has serious intentions and that they are negotiating terms of the flight contract. Bass has received clearance from Russian space doctors for a flight and has been training at the ML CONTINUED FROM 1D Oregon Film and Video Office. The $1 million pales next to the $30 million spent in Oregon by the Tommy Lee JonesBeni-cio del Toro film "The Hunted," but it serves notice that Oregon is film friendly. Although "The Hunted" was Oregon's biggest location shoot, things are slow right now for location filming.

"I'm not sure what is hurting production, but Hollywood is dead right now," said Veronica Rinard, executive director of the film office. "The Dust Factory" promises to be a good advertisement for Oregon, with scenery of the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, Trillium Lake and Clatskanie River. "The locations were really unique, just the richness and lushness of it," said Tani Cohen, known for producing independent films such as "How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog." "Eric looked at some Eastern states, but Eric really wanted to keep it on the West Coast." Cohen said "The Dust Factory" probably will go the route of the film festival circuit next year, building critical buzz for national release in the fall. Like its ambiguous title, "The Dust Factory" is unusual enough to need special treatment. The film verges into the mystical, not like the standard, straight-ahead Hollywood project.

"The Dust Factory, it is this magical place, a surreal magical place," Small said. The story involves a young man, Ryan Flynn, played by Ryan Kelley, who is joined by a friend, Melanie, played by Hay-den Panettiere, on his journey with his grandfather. Only in reality, the grandfather (Mueller-Stahl) is an Alzheimer's patient, and Flynn has been knocked unconscious in an accident; they meet in a kind of between-world, where the grandfather nurtures the young man through his fear of death. "It is slightly inspired by my childhood," said Small. "I think it's really accessible to audiences, whether they're 9 years old or 90 years old." The market is good for such family films, Small said.

The film is very much the vision of first-time director Small, 38, who wrote the script eight years ago. His writing credits include the films "Maximum Risk" and "Rubicon." "He just has a real vision," as sisss CONTINUED FROM 1D Qfflsr places to checkout Not far away is another popular site, Champoeg State Park. CREATE A BUDGET, raising money at one reunion for the next. TRY TO INVOLVE THE FAMILY in the decision-making process. About a year before the reunion, send out a survey asking family members which activities they would like at the reunion. MAKE SPECIFIC PLANS for lodging as well as feeding the masses, having family members bring food or making other arrangements. ONCE REUNION TIME ARRIVES, arrange for a welcoming activity to kick off the event.

For example, hold a family gathering and breakfast the day after everyone arrives. USE THE TIME TOGETHER TO RECORD FAMILY HISTORIES. Plan in advance to have family members bring historical family information and questions about family history. Think about putting someone in charge of compiling information, then sharing with the group later. PLAN AGE-SPECIFIC AND GROUP ACTIVITIES.

Not everyone wants to go kayaking. Plan a closing activity. For example, hold a family banquet at a local hotel. The Oregon Coast is filled with parks, waysides and recreational areas, so there's a lot to choose from for groups large and small. Beverly Beach State Park near Newport is one of the state's most popular, for campers and for those who use it during the day.

The park is at Highway 101 and Highway 20 near Newport. For information, call (800) 551-6949 or (541) 265-9278. Small credited Erika Lock-ridge, executive producer, with finding the money to make the film. "It's a small budget," Small said. "We just found good people were willing to do it for an incredible price." The cinematographer, Stephen Katz, has credits that includes "The Blues Brothers" and "Gods and Monsters." Caterer Larry Larson of Bend, a veteran of 29 years in the movie business, said, "Let's put it this way, I haven't worked this cheap since 1973." The scene being filmed Monday had Mueller-Stahl, whose film credits include "Avalon" and "The Music Box," driving the two young people through an orchard in a classic 1950s vintage Chevrolet convertible.

The brief sequence went through take after take, and each time Small encouraged his actors, "Here we go, lots of energy; we're laughing." Mueller-Stahl, the biggest name in the cast, was an Academy Award nominee for "Shine" and currently is writing a book and planning to star in a film version of a Vladimir Nabokov novel, "Pnin." Among the interested bystanders was Mary Kelley, on hand to look out for her 15-year-old son, who also has been seen in the television series "Smallville." "I'm here to make sure it's a fun, safe time for him," she said. "The last two years he kind of took control of his career and decided this is what he wants to do. "We just try to make sure he makes good decisions." Another bystander was Don Schoen, the owner of the orchard, who had obligingly trimmed his trees and made other adjustments to please the filmmakers. "I'm interested in promoting things locally," he said. "Everybody's cooperative in my neighborhood, including my neighbor, who let them use the driveway." Schoen called the filmmakers very cooperative.

The local crew, including assistant location manager Bobby Warberg of Eugene, got good reviews from old pro Larson, who relocated to Bend from California after filming the TV series "McKenna" in Central Oregon. "The Oregon crew is phenomenal," Warberg said. "They give 110 percent."
