In case Ken Walter is feeling too secure as the New England Patriots punter, here is a reminder about how he got the job. Walter was brought in during the 2001 season when Lee Johnson's kicks started getting shorter and more inconsistent. The Patriots went on to win the Super Bowl, so it's hard to question coach Bill Belichick's decision to change kickers in the middle of that year. New England is on its way to the playoffs again, and after 10 games they're having trouble with their punter again. And this time, it could be Walter who goes.

"The ball wasn't going very far last night," Beli-chick said Monday, a day after New England beat Dallas 12-0 for its sixth consecutive victory. "That is no secret." The Patriots improved to 8-2 two games ahead of Miami in the AFC East even though Walters' average of 38.2 yards per kick is last in the NFL. On Sunday night, he punted eight times for an average of 34.6 yards. A lot of it depends on the situation. One of the kicks was a 28-yarder that resulted in a fair catch at the Dallas 14 yard-line; that would be considered a good punt.

Another went 34 yards to the Cowboys' 44 yard-line; in a defensive game that turns on field position, that's the kind of thing that can be costly. Perhaps more frustrating, Walter did uncork kicks of 40 and 41 yards in the third quarter the latter with a minus-1 yard return and put a 39-yarder on the Dallas 8 in the second. Taylor slowed by knee woes: At Jacksonville, Fred Taylor underwent tests on both knees Monday after twisting one and getting hit on the other in the Jaguars' loss to Tennessee. Taylor sat out most of the fourth quarter of the 10-3 defeat Sunday, and he was not in the game during the final drive, which ended on downs at the Tennessee 2 with Jacksonville seeking the tying touchdown. Favre's thumb sore: At Green Bay, quarterback Brett Favre had a sore right thumb one day after a victory in Tampa but shouldn't miss any games.

"He is only three weeks removed from a broken thumb, so it is going to be sore and it is," coach Mike Sherman said. "He can't really reinjure it unless he breaks another part of the thumb, so it is healing. It will continue to get better." Jets' McGraw out: At Hempstead, N.Y., safety Jon McGraw will miss the rest of the season after reinjuring his right shoulder against the Colts. With the open roster spot, the Jets (3-7) activated tackle Josh Evans, who was reinstated to the team Nov. 4 after missing the first nine weeks of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Chargers' Dwight hospitalized: At San Diego, Chargers wide receiver Tim Dwight remained hospitalized in Denver on Monday with a partially collapsed lung sustained a day earlier in a 37-8 loss to the Broncos. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said Dwight is expected to return to San Diego on Wednesday. MRI shows high ankle sprain for Kearse: At Nashville, Tennessee defensive end Jevon Kearse has a high sprain of his left ankle, good news for the Titans because he heard clicking in the joint after being hurt in their 10-3 victory over Jacksonville. The MRI showed no damage to the joint, and Fisher said Kearse traditionally has been a quick healer with such injuries. Ramsey has been playing with broken foot: At Ashburn, Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey has been playing all season with a broken bone in his right foot.

Coach Steve Spurrier revealed the injury Monday, a day after Ramsey had one of his worst games of the season in a 20-17 loss at Carolina. Carr to miss another game: At Houston, Texans quarterback David Carr will miss at least one game and perhaps more with a sprained right shoulder, meaning veteran Tony Banks will get his second start of the season Sunday against New England. His blocking was gritty.

Terrell Owens thrived in the spotlight again and he even kept his pens in his socks. Owens had a 61-yard touchdown catch among his eight receptions for 155 yards, and Tim Rattay went 21-of-27 for 254 yards in the 49ers' 30-14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. Helped by two downfield blocks by Owens, Ke-van Barlow rushed for a 78-yard score in the third quarter to break open San Francisco's fourth straight home victory. Fullback Fred Beasley also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Rattay, who added more spice to the 49ers' quarterback controversy with a second straight near-flawless performance in place of injured Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia. Former Steelers kicker Todd Peterson made three field goals.

In the teams' first meeting since a rain-soaked game at Candlestick in 1999, San Francisco (5-5) dominated the matchup of defending division champions who have struggled so far this season. Tommy Maddox was 25-of-44 for 327 yards for Pittsburgh (3-7), which lost its sixth in seven games thanks to key defensive errors and Antwaan Randle El's fumble on a kickoff return, which allowed San Francisco to score two touchdowns in 14 seconds. But the Niners' victory was sparked by Owens, who had the best game of his up-and-down season. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. Skidmore College said Monday it will continue its men's hockey program after donors committed $2.5 million to the school's athletics program.

Donations from alumni, parents and others came in after the school in September announced it would cut the team beginning with the 2004-05 season. The decision was part of a plan to restructure the athletics program. The plan followed a two-year study of Skidmore's sports and recreation offerings that warned cuts may be necessary. It called for upgrading coaching positions in women's sports and expanding fitness and recreation programs. NCAA FOOTBALL Holtz facing heat: At Colum for the national skeleton team that will race on the World Cup circuit in the upcoming season, the U.S.

Bobsled and Skeleton Federation announced Monday. MISC. Hasten out: At Atlanta, Stan Kasten, president of three major sports teams in Atlanta, left all three posts Monday, sources told The Associated Press. Kasten headed baseball's Braves, basketball's Hawks and hockey's Thrashers and served as the president of Philips Arena. But his positions have been the subject of speculation since corporate owner Time Warner decided to sell the teams.

Wire reports bia, S.C., South Carolina coach Lou Holtz has a couple of new things to worry about: harsh questions from fans and www.fi-relouholtz.com. The critics, Holtz knows, come with the Gamecocks' (5-6) three-game losing streak. As for the Web site, it's "better than going to pornography," Holtz said Monday. "I hope a lot of people visit it. Maybe I can help the good Lord's work in some way." Despite No.

6 ranking, IUP left out: At Indiana, being ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II coaches poll wasn't good enough to get longtime power Indiana, into the national playoffs. Indiana (10-1) was left out of the 16-team Division II playoffs when it was ranked fifth by the Northeast region selection committee. Only the top four teams in each region qualify. Defending national champion Grand Valley State (10-1), Saginaw Valley State (11-0), Bentley College (10-0) and Edinboro (8-2) were chosen from the Northeast region.

Edinboro handed IUP its only loss. Bentley made the national playoffs for the first time despite playing only one game outside of the Northeast-10 Conference, against Division III Plymouth State.
