The Arizona Republic Phoenix, AptU 2i Ice Capades Pleases Kids-Parents Too Unsinkable Polk Season Ends With Carawan By NANCY BENNETT As long as we have shows like the Ice Capades, there's still a chance our youngsters won't grow up thinking all entertainment is limited to the dimensions of the TV screen. The many children who were present at last night's opening of the 27th edition of the Ice Capades at-the Memorial Coliseum were treated to a lavish spectacle of beauty, comedy and breathtaking skill. Parents were just as delighted as the young ones. The chill and shimmer of the ice holds a special magic for us sun- folk. Elaborate costumes appear more colorful, the music more sparkling, the dancers more graceful than on any ordinary stage.

THE ICE CAPADES offers impressive exhibitions by a number of champions and throws in a talented skating chimp for good measure. But the skaters do more than display their skill. They even act within the framework of dazzling production numbers. From slapstick to a romp through cartoonland to Broadway to the drama of a lost Inca civilization the Ice Capades takes its audience on a marvelous adventure. And no adult can resist the temptation to be swept along by its fantasies.

Six lucky children from the audience were treated to a ride on the giant "Dino the Dinosaur" at the conclusion of "The Flintstone Fantasy," a delightful romp with Fred and Wilma and Yogi the Bear featuring a beautiful solo performance by Janet Runn as the dainty Miss Bluebell. A tail skating quartet of lovable dinosaurs added to the fun, along with a soft shoe routine by a top hatted tiger. IN "HIGH BUTTON Shoes," the star was the marvelous magic screen, which appears to allow skaters to step from a movie screen onto the ice. Sliding, jumping, twirling, twisting and tumbling all play a part in the fun. Especially noteworthy in the athletics department were the zany and difficult antics of Bussey and Mueller; a unique trampo- diving exhibition, and the performance of "champions" Hans and Pepe.

World professional champions Guy llevelle and Gertrude Desjardins offered a stunning display of skill, as did North American figure skating champ Donald Knight in his beautiful "Impossible Dream" sequence. MITSUKO FUNAKOSHI and Sashi Kuchiki were the crowd- pleasers, with their dramatic ice ballet in "Inca Exotic." Here's a superb show, with a cast composed of some of the world's top skaters, with colorful, elaborate costuming, lighting and production professional excellence at its best. The Ice Capades should be at the top of the list for Phoenix families. The show plays through Sunday at the coliseum, with evening performances at 8 p.m. through Saturday and matinees at 2 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday. There is also a 6 p.m. Sunday performance. Phoenix Musical Theater Guild presents "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" at the Phoenix Theater Center, 25 E. Cororwdo Road.

1 All Yon By BINA BREITNER Republic Drama Critic "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" opened last night at the Phoenix Theater Center amidst a flurry of last-minute panics that codirector Richard Erdman said would have caused a Los Angeles show to cancel. The scheduled leading lady, Jean Halderman, lost her voice (and part of her health, according to reports from the producers) the beginning of last week, and has been replaced remarkably well by Elaine Morrow, who had never sung the role before. THEN THE set designer, James became quite ill, leaving his successors Lou Knaak and Gary Reisinger with four sets to design and build in five days. However, the Phoenix Musical Theater Guild has put together a "Molly Brown" they can in many ways be proud of. As far as production is concerned, this is a terrific amateur effort.

The songs are spirited, costumes are flamboyantly successful, the sets colorfully overdone, the direction often inventive, and the choreography much more professional than might be expected from a college student Gary Naylor. UNFORTUNATELY: The 13-member orchestra is slightly ouch. Sometimes the voices can't be heard, especially when actors sing with their backs to the audience. And the acting is oddly at times blatantly amateur, at other moments quite moving in its honesty. The show itself (by Meredith Wiilson with book by Richard Morris) is primarily a vehicle for Molly's money- GERMAN from the kitchen of Hit AUTHENTIC "CONTINENTAL CHEF" Peter's Hofbrau III Western Scottsdala hungry good-hearted It is based, incidentally, on a true character who really did burn up $900,000 by accident, and who moved from Leadville, to Denver in an attempt to climb a social ladder which kept getting kicked out from under her.

The production has been beset by more than average theater jinxing, but they made it. As Molly says often, "I ain't down yet!" It fits PMT's determined effort. "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" continues nightly at 8:30 p.m. through Sunday, with 2:30 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday.
