v- Community activist dies at 88 By Matt Sutkoskl Free Press Staff Writer BOLTON Xenophon Cassius Wheeler, a longtime Bolton resident and community activist, died at his home Wednesday. He was 88. Wheeler moved to West Bolton in 1918 and quickly gained a reputation as local expert in agriculture and business. He remained active in the community through his later years. As recently as 1992, he leased a section of his land in West Bolton that began hosting Little League games this spring.

Wheeler was also a Bolton selectman for 21 years and served in Vermont House in the 1 930s. "It'll be a loss for the town. He was certainly helpful in a lot of things. He was very community-minded," said Town Clerk Deborah LaRiviere. In 1983, Wheeler and his brother established the $100,000 Wheeler Scholarship Trust Fund.

Interest from the fund helps defray costs to Bolton students seeking higher education. "Xen was a good friend of mine," said longtime Bolton resident Ray Atwood. "I'm very sorry to see his death. He's going to be missed by a lot of people in town. It's very unfortunate." Booster members told Lang they would have enough money to cover the fall sports budget by the deadline, Sept. 21, and asked for time to work out ways of paying for other extracurriculars.

"A reasonable alternative is to allow us to come back with a plan for everyone," said Philip Hughes, a booster and assistant football coach. But girls soccer coach Stephanie Hurley was concerned that if the boosters paid for the extracurricular budget this year, Milton taxpayers would feel it could hap and Nancy, all of New York City. He was long recognized as a principal figure in the development of agriculture in Chittenden County. In 1922, Xen began his business career in earnest by organizing local farmers in order to ship milk to the rail head in Richmond. He and Irene also raised poultry and shipped eggs to the Burlington market, at one time keeping as many as 4,000 laying hens. Xen gained a wide reputation as a potato grower during the forties and fifties. Xen's biggest business was the Richmond Farm Supply located on Railroad Street in Richmond where he operated a prosperous trade in hardware, grain, fertilizer, and John Deere farm implements.

During those years, Xen operated three, dairy farms of his own in Richmond and Underhill. He was widely respect ed for his business acumen and much sought after by local dairymen for his advice, counsel and encouragement. During his youth, Xen's principal recreational pursuits were hunting and fishing. In his later years, however, he began to play golf. In 1984, at the age of 77, Xen undertook the considerable task of transforming his 140-acre home farm into the 18-hole West Bolton Golf Club.
