4A THE BURLINGTON FREE PRESS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1992 VERMONT POLITICS Democrat makes low-key run for Congress Classes for Fall Exam Begin Sept. 13th The Woolen Mill, Winooslci 655-3300 ff STANLEY H. KAPLAN ia EDUCATIONAL CENTER LTD. By Ann E. Dontan Free Press Sta ff 'titer Lewis E.

Young decided to run for Congress because no other Democrat had stepped forward to challenge U.S. Rep. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt. But voters should understand that Young is serious about his candidacy and his efforts to represent Vermonters in Washington, the 56-year-old candidate said Monday. "I didn't get into this for the fun of it," Young said.

"This is very time-consuming. I've been all over the state and I've talked with a lot of people." Involvement in community efforts is important, Young said. The Brattleboro native has run unsuccessfully for "secretary of state in 1988 and selectman in Brattleboro in 1987 and 1991. Young is a chef who works at the Holstein-Friesian Association of America. "I'm telling people, 'You don't know me.

But I'm not hard to I'm a working man. I work hard. I was a single parent for 10 years. I have a son in a wheelchair, so I understand the needs of disabled people. I understand what it is to have medical expenses and child care expenses." Young said his campaign is low-key.

He designed his own signs, spending about $150, he said. His campaign has emphasized improving the economy, reducing the federal debt, im proving the quality of education and creating jobs, he said. "I believe that we can turn things around and get ourselves moving forward again," Young said. "We need new leadership and we need to recapture a positive attitude and roll up our sleeves and start moving forward. It's not going to be easy.

We face a lot of difficult questions and there are no easy answers. I think having new people in Washington is going to change a lot of the attitudes of many discouraged people." Timothy Philbin, a Walling-ford businessman, and Rutland Mayor Jeffrey Wennberg are competing today in the Republican primary. The winner will face Sanders and Young in the No vember election. Young said he has not criticized Sanders' record before Monday. But in an interview, Young said he has some objections to Sanders' style and ability to represent Vermont.

"I don't think that Sanders represents the broad spectrum of the people of Vermont, and I don't feel that he has been effective thus far in his role as congressman. He has been unable to form any alliances because he has alienated so many people by the way he interacts with people. He has a tendency to be somewhat abrasive." Young said he favors gun control and supports a woman's right to choose an abortion. Looking for something to do? Read the Weekend section every Thursday in The Burlington Free Press.
