Keel's long hair was necessary for a picture role. A FTER SEEING " Annie Get Your Gun " A in 1950, 1 picked Howard Keel as one --of the " stars of tomorrow." One look at this big hunk of masculinity with a voice to match convinced me that he couldn't miss. Everything was in his favor. He was starred in his first picture, and he was under contract to a studio noted for its musical productions. Keel started off like a bang from Annie Oakley's six-shooter, and then something went amiss. Metro had a couple of other singers on the lot, Mario Lanza and Ezio Pinza; but since Mario is a tenor and Ezio a basso, I figured Howard would have the baritone department all to himself. Evidently there weren't enough musicals to go around, and my boy Howard soon was playing straight dramatic roles in some of Metro's minor efforts. No actor can shine unless given the proper material, and I was beginning to think I'd picked myself a lemon. But. I underestimated Keel's staying power. Pinza, thanks to a couple of real smellers, left the studio, and Lanza followed suit. Keel waited his turn. Then along came a picture called " Kiss Me Kate." The part of the male lead called for a virile, handsome baritone who could convince an audience he was capable of taming the shrew, in this case Kathryn Grayson. The only person at M-G-M who thought Howard Keel was right for the part was Howard Keel. Producer Jack Cummings was the most adamant of all. He even fought against testing him. But, after everybody and his nephew had been tried and found wanting, Keel wore Jack down to a nub and made the test He came thru handsomely. After Cummings saw Keel on the screen, he said, " I don't know how I could have been so blind." After "Kate," Howard started to climb again. Four years after I picked him as real star material, Howard Keel made an honest woman of me. He signed a new long-term deal with M-G-M, without a single option for the first three years. His latest picture, "Severi Brides for Seven Brothers," wowed the critics and the paying customers, and recently he finished playing Hannibal opposite Esther Williams in "Jupiter's Darling." In other words, the boy is here to stay! When he dropped by to tell me about his good fortune, he was grinning from ear to ear over his new three bedroom house on an acre and a half of ground, complete with swimming pool.
