Health Women Susceptible To Urinary Thursday. 13. 1987 KEBBVILLE DAILY TIMES-SA U.S. Researchers See Adverse OR. LAWRENCE E.

LAMB DEAR DR LAMB I have a problem with rpnirrinK Madder infections It seems to kick up after and after a night of drinking heer Sometimes the urine test shows infection without symptoms and sometimes there are symptoms without an infection I've heard of chlamydia, hut 1 don't know exactly what it is, how you get it or how it is cured. Would you comment on why I get these repeated bladder infections and what 1 can do about them? DEAR READER Women are particularly susceptible to urinary tract infections A major factor is the short urethra (compared to the male) of only about 4 centimeters (1.5 inches). That allows bacteria to gain ready access to the bladder if there is any infection or infectious agents around the opening of the urethra, or if there is a vaginal infection That is also why women have to be particularly careful about hygiene and personal habits to help avoid recurrent urinary tract infections. It is true that you can have a urinary tract infection and not have any symptoms. In other cases, the bladder may be irritated or undergo changes, as from low female hormone levels at the menopause that leads to symptoms.

Incidentally, the changes in the outlet of the bladder from lack of estrogen increase a woman's risk of urinary tract infections. Chlamydia is but one bacteria that can cause a urinary tract infection. It can also involve the tubes and is a common cause of female sterility because of this. It is a sexually transmitted disease and is often asymptomatic. The diagnosis is made by identifying the bacteria, which may require some special techniques if it is to be found.

Once correctly diagnosed, it can be treated with antibiotics. You can learn how to help prevent urinary tract infections from Special Report 42, Women's Urinary Tract Infections, which I am sending you. Others who want this report can send $1.00 and a stamped, self-addressed long envelope to THE HEALTH LETTER, P.O. Box 19622, Irvine, CA 92713. There are a lot of things you Ask Dr.

Lamb Lawrence Lamb, M. Tract infections impact From Immigration Law ran do that will minimize this problem When a woman has several infections within a six month period she probably will need treatment for a six month period to stop the recurrences. DEAR DR. LAMB: My doctor put me on Plagyl. He said it was for a vaginal disease.

I asked my boyfriend who he got it from and he said he had never been with anyone else. Well, neither had I Would you tell me how long it takes before a woman knows she has the disease? My doctor said women have to take medicine, but a man just passes it out. DEAR READER: If your doctor is treating you with Flagyl for a vaginal infection, he must think you have trichomoniasis. This common infection is caused by a small parasite somewhat like an amoeba. It frequently causes a green tinged discharge.

But you can have it and not have any symptoms. Men also have the disease and it may not cause any symptoms in males. The parasite may inhabit the bowel and bladder. Either you or your boyfriend could have had the parasite for a long time and never have known it. You must have misunderstood your doctor.

Men don't just pass the infection off. It is essential to treat both the male and female partner to avoid reinfection. If you are treated and your sexual partner is not, you will probably have it again. DEAR DR LAMB: I would like to know why so many companies use coconut oil. palm oil or palm kernel oil in their products when coconut oil is so bad for your health Is it because coconut oil is less expensive than other oils 9 DEAR READER I think you can answer the question with two words: "corporate greed." The business of business is to make money otherwise they cannot stay in business.

They make money by increasing the price of the product or decreasing the cost Since people often buy the cheaper product, they choose to make products as cheaply as possible. The other factor related to cost is the shelf life of the product. As you know, fats tend to get rancid. The highly saturated fats, particularly coconut oil and palm kernel oil, don't get rancid as quickly and have a longer shelf life. There is another factor that permits this situation: the public.

As long as the consuming public is willing to let this happen, it will. The alternative is to educate people and get them to stop using products made with these oils. That may require the public to make an effort, including preparing their own foods rather than buying prepared ones. Dr. Lamb welcomes letters from readers with health questions.

By DANA FIELDS Associated Press Writer MEXICO CITY fAP) The United States' new immigration law was aimed less at controlling the U.S. borders than at giving the U.S. government more control over Mexican workers, a California professor told a conference on the law's impact on Mexican-Americans.

Professor Bert Corona, who also is director of the National Committee for a Fair Reform of the Immigration Law, said the law was unlikely to halt the flow over the border of Mexican workers, whom he said had contributed to virtually every aspect of U.S. development. Corona, of the Chicano studies department at California State University at Los Angeles, spoke Monday night at the first session of a conference called "Principal Demographic, Social, Political and Cultural Aspects of the Community." Mexican and U.S. sociologists and immigration experts were taking part in the conference, sponsored by the Mexican Interior Department. More lectures were scheduled Tuesday on the nature of the U.S.- Mexican community, while the closing sessions Wednesday and Thursday were to focus on the so-called Simpson-Rodino immigration reform law.

Corona noted that some U.S. lawmakers have characterized the immigration law as anti- Mexican and a threat to the unity of families. Immigrants in the United States were regarded as "colonists" in the 18th century and as "newcomers" in the 19th, but Mexicans are called "illeg- als," he said. He called the Simpson-Rodino law essentially "a labor law that seeks to control, regulate and expropriate the sacred right of Mexican workers, putting them Fatal Plane Crash Blamed On Landing Gear Failure MEXICO CITY (AP) A cargo plane that crashed on a busy highway here last month was unable to gain enough altitude because of a mechanical failure in its landing gear, according to a preliminary investigation report published Wednesday. 13 Born today, you are a superb judge of character and your first impressions of a person are seldom misleading. Indeed, you have such insight into human nature that you seem able to outthink and outmaneuver virtually anyone. This ability will no doubt serve you well in business though it has much to offer you in the arts, as well. Indeed, you may decide to devote yourself exclusively to the arts at some point in your life; do so, and you will likely make quite a name for yourself You are able to understand even the most complex things almost immediately However, what will prove more valuable, no doubt, is your ability to explain things to others, teaching is, indeed, something at which you would excel, though you may not have the patience required to pursue it as a career Alto born on this Alfred Hitchcock, film director; Mrt Lahr, comedian. Products in the control of the government bureaucracy." Another speaker, Margo Ynes de Ley, of the University of Illinois, noted that the traditional pattern of Mexican migration to California had given way to new patterns that have spread the Mexican-American population to at least 12 U.S. states. Ms. de Ley said recent studies of the Mexican-American population in the United States showed an erosion of education and economic levels; a growing problem with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS); a negative impact from the new immigration law; threats to the language; a reduction in federal contracts to Mexican-American- owned businesses; a growing urban "gentrification" that pushes families of Mexican descent out of their barrios; a growing percentage of families living below the poverty line; and a low level of electoral participation.
